Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

When he was within 1 second at the marker, he was using DRS. You could see it when they were going. Lewis was able to gap Kimi by a second at the DRS line. While for much of the lap, Kimi was within a second, that third sector seemed to be all Lewis' area, and for the DRS zone, that's what really mattered.

And the reason he didn't pass- he wasn't faster. Which can be said for virtually the entire field- there were very few DRS zone passes.

Great controlled race by Lewis. Too bad for Button- not sure why he had to pit in such an odd sequence, and for one extra set. And the one time the front tire guy slipped up meant that he was going to end up behind Vettel. oops.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Kind of a snoozer race, I really don't like that track at all. Thankfully the next track we'll see is the anti-christ of the Hungaroring - SPA!

I watched the last hour of "Senna" last night, truly an amazing documentary. I did not know in 1990 he crashed Prost out on purpose when they put the pole position on the dirty line and he knew he was screwed. He got screwed when the rules changes took away all the advantages the Williams had, that must have happened after he signed with them. He never got comfortable in the Williams. I was intrigued by the fact he stated he was never truly happy or fullfilled. That's kind of sad considering he at it all in terms of earthly things and he helped so many people in Brazil. Maybe that's what motivated him. I will watch the whole thing later this week and the Indy Edmonton race.

I watched Senna on Netflix. I was watching the race when he crashed out and died. That event still gives me the creeps.

As of Spa -- "Thou shall not lift at Eau Rouge."

not surprisingly SENNA is one of my favorite films. the 1st corner incident @ Suzuka in 90 wasn't just the result of Senna realizing Balestre had screwed him on that decision re: pole position but it also reached back to the year prior at Suzuka where Senna tried to overtake Prost, Prost turned into him and while Senna continued and Prost did not, Senna's win was vacated as he had missed a chicane due to the position of his car after the accident and the fact marshalls had to push his car to help get it started and they certainly wouldn't do that on the live track. Balestre screwed him out of a win there (and he lost any chance for the 89 title then) and Prost was pretty childish about the entire episode afterward accepting no blame whatsoever for the incident despite the fact Senna was 3/4 along side him when he turned into him.

I lost respect for Prost after seeing that attitude...then there is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZlOIIIA3co&feature=related

I love how Mansell and Burger seem to agree w/everything Senna says about Prost here.

I watched the entire thing last night and I fully get why Senna did what he did in 1990 after that fiasco in 1989, what a screw job. Prost is pretty much a jerk (it's funny he got fired from Ferrari for criticizing the car), but at least he is a Trustee on Senna's Foundation, so maybe he's doing some good there.

I also appreciate his religious beliefs and the fact that he credited God long before it was a common thing to do publicly. It was chilling that the day he died he read a Bible passage in which it said he (Senna) would get the greatest gift of all from God, which was to see God. It's like he knew he was going to die that day.

Edmonton...A good race, though there was too much fuel conservation going on. I think the push to pass didn't do a whole lot for the race because all you have to do is push it if the guy behind you is and it cancels it out then, though Rahal credited it for some moves on cars they didn't show us. Either it should be an unknown when you are using it or they should do like F1 with the DRS and the defending car can't use it. Bobby's comment about Helio blocking as soon as he gets his rental car at the airport was a LOL moment.

yeah, I think Prost comes across as petulant at best, he just didn't want to have competition...the part about reading he'd see God the morning of the race is unbelievable. you can see in this video he's got a ton on his mind and possibly he had interpreted that passage as this being his final day/race...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnGk19zVVRY&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PL10E297B1C1D58E71

we'll never know.

re: Prost again, being on the Senna Foundation board is a great thing, maybe after all of the heated ex-changes and time and distance he let all of the negativity go.

Prost and Senna reconciled before Senna's death. You'll notice in the movie that Prost was in Senna's pit that day. He was helping out the team and Senna after Prost retired.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

That movie was excellently done. I didn't know a lot about Senna, but he was fun to watch having gone back and seen some of his old races. He had a lot of passion. I knew there was some friction between him and Prost. I was going to make a crack at Prost until I read about the info that he and Senna made up. I think a lot of the friction was because of Balstre. (Which proves that you never let a Frenchman into a position of power when he can help another French group win. See Michel Platini for details.)

Here's an awesome tribute from Top Gear UK.

I thought the documentary was great also. I was a little surprised that the only mention of him possibly saving Eric Comas' life was a short clip during the credits.

I'd like to watch the extended version of the movie, being a history nut, I just love digging deeper and deeper into topics. I never really knew that much about him, I was just getting into F1 racing back in 94.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Indycar has added a 5 second delay to the push to pass, thus eliminating the defensive use of it, obviously a good move, but I'm still against contrived passing devices like push to pass and the DRS. I'd love to hear what Senna would say about these things.

I don't like P2P as all, so any modification of it is a plus. Removal would be better.

I don't mind DRS, I just don't like the way it is implemented.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

So my eldest son and I sat down to watch the race Sunday, and they briefly interupted the beginning of the race and mentioned the shooting at the Sikh Temple, then 10 minutes later is was wall to wall coverage from a helicopter. That was infuriating. People get shot all the time in Milwaukee, what's the big deal? And it's one of those deals where the reporters know absolutely nothing until they are briefed by the athorities, so why interrupt a broadcast? With cell phones these days anyone who needed to know what is going on could get info. The ABC channel even forced the NBC channel to ditch the Olympics to cover it after the ABC station had coverage for an hour. I stopped watching very early on, went to Indycar.com and watched the little symbols circulate around the track and watch the Olympics. Apparently it was a very entertaining race. :(

Well, it is breaking news.... and it is Wisconsin.

Speaking of an Indy car race yesterday... there was one? I saw the replay to the Continental race at Indy, but no mention of a race. Missed it completely.

I was watching from the green flag and it started out great! wilson spins, franchitti pulling up on power then they move to the coverage of Oak Creek, but with NOTHING to report, something terrible happened, shots were fired, but then for 2 hours really no real news or facts to report on, why couldn't they do a split screen?

I was hoping to contact WISN and ask them if they could re-play the race late at night and I could just dvr it, but I cannot find anywhere on their site an email address to send the inquiry to. That's just as irritating as the bump itself. The event was unfolding very slowly, they should have just cut in every 15 mins or something. A split screen would have been great.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Great, Robin Miller calls the ABC telecast the "best broadcast in ages", and I missed it.

Marshall Pruett says there's a rumor in the paddock Lotus isn't giving Judd any more cash for engine upgrades as they wrap up their Indycar affairs. So next year at this point just GM & Honda are the suppliers, I wonder if the engines are frozen at the end of the year to keep development costs down, otherwise they could be spending tons of cash on the engines throughout the winter, then pass it on to the teams (or try to).

prices to the teams is supposed to be fixed, so even if GM and Honda spend money- it should not be passed on.

As for Judd- I wonder if the engine is far enough along for another OEM to put their name on it.

It wasn't the good of a broadcast. I think Miller is writing nice stuff because he has to. Personally I don't particularly like the booth people no matter which channel is going.

I think the real question is does anyone want to risk putting their reputation on line with a Judd engine.....
