Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Sorry if this a little late.
I saw the Senna movie last year and it's fantastic. Even my Girl friend liked it. His race at Monaco in the Toleman was unbelievable.
I was lucky enough to see him a few times and His car control was beyond words.
Another film that is very good is a BBC documentary called I believe, " Grand Prix, the killer years" it ran on Velocity channel several times last winter and might run again. You might also find it at amazon. It's about all the deaths in GP racing. Very worth watching but pretty sobering. I was fortunate enough to be around to watch some of those older guys, such as Rindt and Jackie Stewart and I'll never forget James Hunt vomiting in his helmet from fear on a number of occasions.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Are you sure that Hunt was vomiting from fear? His off course exploits were rather famous.

I miss Hesketh Racing!!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I think the real question is does anyone want to risk putting their reputation on line with a Judd engine.....

On the Judd engine that is now a Lotus- maybe not. But Judd has been around long enough that they would do a good job given the resources. The #1 problem from this season was time over money- since they got a very, very late start. Then it became cost in a big, big way- Lotus could not fund any improvements to it.

If someone really got behind it, I think it would work out well.

I agree with you that Judd can build an good engine given time and money, it just after all the "bad press" with Lotus does any other car company want to risk it is the question.

Speaking of James Hunt (who I believed had "Sex, Breakfast of Champions" on his suit):

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/hollywood-lauda-hunt-movie-set-2013-release-180527119.html

I cannot wait to see that in a theater (I don't go to many movies, maybe 1 a yr at most). I just hope Ron Howard sticks to racing and not Hunt's hooking up with thousands of women. As far as what was on Mr. Hunt's suit, there just isn't enough time in the am for that breakfast, but....how many days a year did he actually have to get up before noon....what a life.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I got a chance to walk the course for the Baltimore street race in a couple of weeks. might be ok, but pretty bumpy. especially in braking areas..

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

This summer break thing in F1 sucks. It just kills all the momentum of the season.

Indy....so I haven't read anything recently about a firm replacement race for the one that was to be last weekend. I thought Indy was contractually obligated to run 16 races with IZOD.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Miller is again advancing the story that there are a couple owners who want to buy the series from the Hulmans, fire Bernard, and run their own show, with the price of the Dallara spare parts being a major issue, among other things (getting screwed by China and Lotus). First, I seriously doubt the Hulmans would sell the series. Secondly, if they like racing and don't like the way Indy is being run, why not quit the series and go race another series or 2? Third, Miller needs to name names. Penske has to be one, there's no one else with enough cash to think the Hulmans would even listen to them. Maybe Carpenter is being TG's voice, but there's no way TG and Penske would ever get together for something like this.

I would agree that if Bernard is allowing Dallara to charge more than they are contractually supposed to, well, that is a huge problem, considering the budgetary implications. If Bernard is allowing a breach of contract, he really screwed up and that could be grounds to fire the guy. But I'd like to see the owners in question to come forward with specifics to make their case instead of this cloak and dagger stuff. Another idea would be that Miller should just keep his trap shut and stop stirring the pot, and allow it to play out confidentially, and not do what ESPN did to Ryan Braun. I'd rather just gleefully enjoy the racing and be blind to what is going on behind the scenes, but that is not possible at this point, so let's just get the fact out there.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

As much as I enjoy reading some of Miller's stuff, I think he is way off base on his "reports". As I mentioned on Speed forums, until I see names listed I am going to be skeptical of this story by Miller. I have no doubt there is some dissension in the ranks of owners, but how far does it really go? Is their really a mutiny afoot or is it just "reporters" making embellishments for good stories?

let penske and andretti or penske and ganassi or penske and kv start their own series or buy this one...then what? we get years like 1994 where 1 team dominates because they'll allow testing 24-7 and the teams w/money will take it all. I don't know about you guys, but to me F1 sucked when Ferrari had the only chance to win the title from 2000-2004 and that's what the owners would want, sort of unreal how disconnected they are from facts

as much as I HATE to admit it, taxicar does have this equation pretty right-on, fans first, EVERYTHING else 2nd

What's your handle in the speed forum? I posted once...

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Same as it is here... MattS.

I don't post there too often. Maybe once a month tops.

I did once, there was an article on the 2012 Focus, of which I own one, and some folks were ripping it, so I had to go on and defend my car to a certain extent - it's not perfect but I love it.

So Miller says the turncoats are anti-CART people, meaning TG is in the middle of this for sure, possibly Barnes. I don't know if Penske and Andretti would be considered anti-CART, they both were in for a long time.

David Coultard drove the Red Bull F-1 show car through the Lincoln Tunnel.

Coulthard is still a racer at heart...."we did 190, but I wish we could have gone faster". Gotta love it.

Indy....The race was good, there was a decent amount of passing going on. Too bad Power got screwed on the pit stop/yellow, then his P2P would not work. I really thought he'd take a shot at Briscoe, but the P2P screwed him.

Seabass must have had a mechanical problem, there's no way he wipes out like that on his own.

Marco is still a terd. They asked him if the track was better for passing, to which he responds "No." Obviously he doesn't know what he is talking about. I'd love to listen to his radio transmissions all weekend sometime.

Great result for Rubens.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

So now the chicane is gone on the main strait at Baltimore and the cars are getting rally car air under them at the RR tracks. Didn't anyone foresee this? Ugh. I suppose they can just as the chicane back in, but the lack of foresight is not good.

I am so pumped for Spa!
