Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

please...ANYONE but Vettel next year, please for the love of god.

I agree. I have no idea what it is about Vettel that I don't like but there is something about his personality that just gets on my nerves. I think part of it is I think he tends to be a whiner and I hate that trait.

in a straight fight I think he loses to Alonso, Hamilton, Schumacher (yes, still). but since he gets the best equipment we'll never know for sure

On equal equipment I think Alonso and Hamilton for sure beat Vettel out. Possibly Schumi and I will even throw in Button, Rosberg, and if healthy Kubica as drivers who would give him a run.

At least Button won the race- wasn't all that exciting, even with Jensen and Fernando outdriving Seb.

Is Button smooth or what?!? No way did he have the best car but his strategy and easy on the tyres driving style won him that race.

Can't figure what happened to Hamilton- he was going well until the second set of tires, and he had some pit issues. Weber- held his own.

It was probably his latest run in with Massa that did it! ;) For once the Stewards got it right. That was just a racing incident from good hard driving.

In more alarming news- did anyone catch the comment at the end that this was the first race a Lotus finished on the lead lap? Granted- helped by a safety car. But progress is progress.

I didn't catch that comment, but it is good to see progress. I especially like it because I think Heikki is a class act.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I think this year has been the year of the car. I say this because in qualifying it's generally been teamates in the rows. RBR, then McL, then Ferarri, then Mercedes, the Force India.

I read a rumor about Button wanting to drive for Ferrari a few weeks ago. I'd like to se that, I've been really impressedwith him this year.

IRL - whose gonna take it? Will or Dario? I'm begrudgingly going to say Dario, Penske overall this yr just seems unlucky. What happened to Power at the last race was a crime.

I also have been impressed of late w/Button (wasn't really THAT impressed when he won the title...go figure).

I just wish that the other top teams RBR, Ferrari were more like McLaren and gave their guys an equal opportunity to win.

as for Indycar...man. both guys starting in the 9th row? At this point I'd give to Franchitti since he's still better on ovals. but 34 cars? holy crap that's going to be tough, especially if it turns into a pack race like Kentucky or Chicagoland generally were.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

The race to win the Korean GP was pretty boring, but 2nd wasnt. While there was only a few real moves, the fact that Weber and Hamilton were so close to each other for so long made it really tense. If Button could just close that last .2 sec, and be able to use the DRS... but coulda, woulda, shoulda....

Not a bad track this year- seems as if one year of more development has made the rest of the track a little nicer, but I'm not sure I like 3 straights, tight corners, flowing corners and repeat 55 times that awesome.

And with this race, the constructor's goes to Red Bull.

omg. please tell me no-one got killed or seriously injured in the crash in Vegas

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

just saw Danica Patrick pulled behind a curtain crying. I'm fearing she's just gotten word about Wheldon.

please, don't let this be another #99.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Over a half hour drivers meeting, and the red flag is going on 2 hours. Still no word on Dan nor the remaining race.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Dan Wheldon passed. :(

The racers will do a 5 lap salute in a few min.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

god **** it

last time I saw something this horrific it was Greg Moore (another favorite)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

There is absolutely nothing that we can ever do as a fan or someone involved in racing that can prepare us for a moment like this... We all know that this sport can give us unimaginable joy, happiness, and thrill... We also know that this sport has inherent dangers... Today those dangers became all too clear :(

Godspeed Dan :(:(:(

very well put.

I have to say I think I'm in shock. I don't know how else to describe the fact I can't believe what I saw today

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

A very sad day in open-wheel and all of racing. RIP Mr. Wheldon

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I agree, watching footage of the track flags being lowered to half staff after that race was one of the saddest things I've ever seen.

yes, that was just an awful afternoon. and just like Dan, Greg was starting at the back and had made his way past 10-12 cars in just 10-12 laps and was flying...then it was over

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I had a hockey game today and I rushed home hoping to be able to catch the last 20 or 30 laps on TV. Heard on the radio about the crash but they were only too quick to give a quick drive-by of a horrific crash and then had to get back to the NFL talk. Made it to my TV about 20 minutes before Bernard made his announcement, but you could tell from the reactions of the drivers as they left that meeting what they had been told. Sad, really very sad. I was a huge Greg Moore fan and watching his crash did something to my love of this sport. I have a much harder time watching it and absolutely hate it when there is ever a crash of any magnitude on an oval track. Within a couple of years of Earnhardt's crash I had given up on NASCAR, even though they have made so many strides that things are so much safer over there now. I'm glad I wasn't in front of my TV for this one. I don't know if I can accept the risks these guys take any more, don't know if I can continue to watch it. :(

the death of Greg Moore on live tv (like Dan today) almost killed my enthusiasm for watching open wheel oval racing (he was both my favorite and my dad's favorite at the time). it took some time but I came back because the sounds and the speed and the display of talent was too much to forsake. and my Dad started taking me to races when I was 9-10 so it's just ingrained in me now.

today was an awful day and I'm sickened by what I saw. it's an unfortunate irony that Dan Wheldon had spent so much time testing the new car which by all accounts is an upgrade in safety by a huge magnitude. and now he won't see Indycar enter a new and even safer era.

In the documentary SENNA the feeling of "what are we doing here?" is really brought to the fore during the Imola (San Marino GP) weekend. after Ruben's huge crash on Friday practice and after watching Roland Ratzenberger's crash and going to the site of his death, Dr. Sid Watkins asked Ayrton "why don't you retire? you're the fastest man in the world you've won 3 championships, why don't you retire, I'll retire and we'll go fishing?"

"Sid, I can't quit."

I think Ayrton's response is how most if not all of these drivers react in these situations. It's something I can't comprehend but that's why I could never drive one of these cars. but it's why I watch them in part. they've got guts beyond belief but also are so driven to race and race at this level and these cars that it it's inspiring

or at least to me it is

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

One of my friend's had a sports radio show in Watertown, NY and Wheldon came on like a lot of IRL drivers do. It's not one of the biggest media markets by any stretch, but Wheldon came on and loved every second of it. He's was funny and down to earth. It's said to lose a man like him way too soon.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

For once I am happy that I did not watch a race live, either in person or on TV. I have seen tragedy like yesterday too many times those ways. While I was never a Wheldon fan per se, I did enjoy his brash style. It is so sad for any racer to die that way, but it seems especially so after his highly improbable Indy win this year and then with his career getting back head in the right direction.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I dvr'ed the race and planned to watch it after supper last night. Around 3 I turned the race on just to see what was going on and I was a car with a tarp over it and debris everywhere; I knew that was a bad sign, but I stayed with my plan to watch after supper. My wife was curious, so she went on line and found out Weldon was seriously injured and that Power was out, so I was double down bummed. Right before supper, she went back on and found out he had died, then all 5 of us knew. It was a sad supper. So then after supper, we watched the entire broadcast, which felt really weird knowing what happened, but we wanted to understand what happened. My oldest son (15) is a huge race fan like me, he was especially shaken by the whole situation, never seeing or going through a deal like this. I recall the Greg Moore and Senna incidents like it was yesterday.

I, like Matt, wasn't a Wheldon fan either, but hearing/seeing him on the telecasts this year and winning Indy makes it feel a little more close to home.

God bless the Wheldon Family
