Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Man it's getting depressing. Very sorry to hear this.

I am somewhat surprised that the FIA is going with two GP's in the US. Though I know they have wanted to be here there has never been the money, and of course the ever present politics. I had always hoped it would return to Watkins Glen but that is wishful thinking for sure.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I am in total shock the US is going to get a 2nd F1 Race. It sucks badly that Austin and NJ are so freaking far away from WI. Elkhart Lake would be awesome for F1, but of course it's not a sexy and metropolitian enough for F1.

I've always though the Moto GP races were far more dangerous than openwheel. Those racers are the bravest of the brave.

I am stunned! I know Bernie has wanted a NYC race for some time but still 2 F1 races in the US!:eek:

Maybe it is a sign that things are not going well in Austin? I have heard nothing like that I am just speculating. Or maybe the USGP will alternate between Austin and NJ?

If this does actually happen I am super excited! I can be in NYC in about 3 hours!! :) Although as I have stated many times, I would prefer the Glen, but alas that will never happen again. :(

I also shocked. why would they do this? I mean I want it don't get me wrong, and I'm going to Austin next year, but w/such a small base of open wheel fans in the U.S. I don't see how both tracks could survive, let alone one...given F1's U.S. history

I hope they can get a U.S. kid in there soon to raise interest w/the casual fans

re: Moto GP, TimothyA, spot on. I can't believe the balls it takes to dive into corners like those guys

IMHO, there are more than you think.

Indy drew the most in F1 by a wide, wide margin. Close to 2:1. Even on bad weekends, there were over 200k on race day. As far as I know, the closest to that is Silverstone at about 100k- the rest are college football kind of numbers (outside of the big houses). And figure that there are at least double that who could not or would not go to Indy.

If this New York thing happens, they will not have a problem getting butts in the seats- between the entire New England area, we have a very United Nations New York to fill in with big $$. Texas is a bigger worry, to me. Not much in terms of local population, hard to drive to, and not easy access. But they seem to be making it happen.

The bigger question to me is- where's all the real money coming from? Are advertisers putting up the sanctioning money so that they can show this in the US? It's not as if they are going to find a dime of tax payer money here- you'll see a publicly funded stadium for U of Texas before any furrin racing anything.

I'm geeked about New Jersey- I know we can stay in Manhattan. My other friend sold his place in Hoeboken, I think.

I have read that the promoters are thinking that the Austin GP will draw heavily from Mexico and Central America.

According to Speed no public money is going to be used for the NJ race. Where it is coming from then? No clue. I am guessing that the manufacturers are going to be heavily supporting the race as they were the big pushers for it. Since NYC has been a pet project for Bernie, maybe he lowered his sanctioning fee? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :D

I'm geeked about New Jersey

Me too!!!!

Red Bull, maybe? I'm making that connection because they have the soccer team there.

The location is relatively near to a highway, the main concern will be the ability of the local roads to handle the traffic. While there's not a huge population in Austin proper, it's only about an hour from San Antonio and less than three hours from Houston and Dallas.

There's actually some public money going to put on the race in Austin.

I think both races will draw well the first year, then I think the NY/NJ site will easily outdraw the Austin site. Austin is so far from everywhere.

I do think this race is India a sad deal, seeing as India is such a stinking poor country, yet all this cash is getting spent on a sporting event there. Only a race in North Korea would rival the weird feeling of this race.

IMHO, the race in China is bad, too. Yes, the country may have a lot of money, but the people don't. It's really obvious that the People's Republic is putting all of the money out there, for appearences. I wonder how many of the crowd actually pays for their tickets.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Bernie could care less about the host counties wealth and/or politics. All he cares about is that they can pay the sanctioning fee. :(

For once I don't blame Bernie, I blame the countries more themselves for spends millions and millions of dollars on a once a year thing that could be gone in an instant once Bernie finds someone else who will pay more than they are.

I do agree China is in the same boat as India.

Very interesting article on the catch fence @ Vegas. The support poles that hold the fence up @ Vegas (and other tracks) are on the trackside of the fence and the thought is a support pole took Dan's rollhoop right off his car.

India.....all of a sudden Massa is fast. Where was that all yr? Is RB taking it easy or is Ferarri onto something FINALLY?

Fairly interesting article for sure. I had no idea that the pole for catch fencing differed at tracks. I guess I never gave it much thought. One part that really caught my attention was the quote at the end by Graham Rahal. I really like what he said. He comes off as well thought and intelligent, while I thought Hamilton came off sounding accusatory.

I would love for Massa to be fast, but my guess is that he was running light and RB and others were not. Or maybe others, especially RB, are working on stuff for next years car.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Missed both the live show and the replay- but the front of the field turned out to be nothing new- Vettel, Button, Alonso.

The only interesting part was that Masa hit Hamilton (according to Formula1.com), and the subsequent pits let the Mercedes by. Masa got a drive through for it.

As much as I hate to admit it Massa deserved more than what he got. He knew Hamilton was there and didn't give him any room. Poor form.

Beside that the whole race was BORING.
