Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

maybe Briatore (sp?) was right in that Ferrari should focus on 2012?

I agree w/you on the nascar thing, I'm mystified partly by the stance those drivers take. I mean #1 Indy hasn't had a fatality since what Scott Brayton? what year was that, 98? Greg Moore in Oct 99 was the last I can think of for non INDY 500 races, along w/Gonzalo Rodriguez the same year. what a devastating blow that was for Penske for that year and the future.

F1 hasn't had a fatality since Senna/Ratzenberger in 94 so...it's dangerous yes, but not like it was in Mario/AJ/Jim Clark/Fangio/Donahue/R Petersen/Villeneuve days that's for sure

Tony Renna was killed testing at Indy in 2003... Around that time, there were problems with IRL cars leaving the ground as well... Not saying that is was more dangerous than other forms of racing, but there were noticable problems with the cars at that time...

I know what you mean. I wonder if they would ever race again on the Nordschleife?? Could they bring it up to modern safety standards?

Or maybe Schumi and Sir Jackie taking a ride around in a GT car and talking about the course as the drove it.

I doubt they could bring it up to modern standards and here's Derek Bell talking about a lap in a 956 (I thought there was one where he or someone else was doing it live unlike this dubbed version). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M11GOVfA50

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Qualifying in China kind of tells a story of the season so far....
1- Vettel
2,3- Button, Hamilton - .75 sec
4- Rosberg -.9 sec
5,6 Alonso, Masa -1.4 sec.

Weber must have had problems, he didn't make it out of Q1.

Can't tell how the bottom teams are doing- vs. the Q1 of the top teams, they are 2-4 seconds slower... Lotus is a very close 2 sec off the pace- not bad. But they sure have a long way to go.

I doubt I'll stay up to watch- a little too early- 3am EST...

Weber's KERS was on the blink.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Man, do I wish I recorded the race- I saw the review on speed, and it was a humdinger of a race.

Starting with the McLaren of Hamilton not starting, and barely making the grid in time.

And then both McLarens taking Vettel at the start.

Lots of passes, more than one leader.

Weber charging from 18th to the podium!

Hamilton
Vettel
Weber
Button

what a race. So I hear- Speed's replay isn't until tomorrow at noon.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Simply an awesome race! The best F1 I have seen in years. Tons of passing and tire strategy coming into play.

McLaren and Red Bull are by far and away the class of the field. Second tier are Ferrari and Mercedes. Then everyone else. But if RB was smart, they would remove their KERS and get rid of that dead weight. Three races and three failures with it. It's doing nothing but hurting them. Without it maybe they would have won today, although I doubt it.

Weber with an awesome drive! From 18th to 3rd!:eek::eek: Amazing. And with his KERS not working. Wow. I think Weber is a decent driver but I think that drive shows more how good the RB is than how good a driver Weber is.

I have always liked Sutil and thought he was a good driver (i think he got more out of the Force India car than what an average driver would do) but Di Resta is consistently out driving him and it makes me wonder if I over estimated Sutil or if Di Resta is that good of a young(ish) driver.

It looks like maybe Lotus has made some strides with their car. Heikki finished ahead of a Sauber and a Williams and his teammate. I wonder if they can start to compete with those teams regularly and maybe take the fight to Force India and STR.

What a range of situations for Andretti Motorsports.

Hunter Rey had this one solidly as a contender, and while Conway started well, a bad pit put him at the back.

And as the last yellow cleared, Conway was amazing fast- great passes on both Franchitit and Briscoe. Whereas Hunter Rey, well, his car died.

Congrats to Mike Conway for his first Indy Car win!!!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

yes, great win for Conway and a great weekend (sort of) for Andretti Autosport. At least we know they can compete for wins now, (Conway and Hunter-Reay anyway).

VS really is behind though on their tv coverage.

F1 I'm SO glad to see Hamilton win and his pass on Vettel was sweet. I'm just not a Vettel fan. he comes across as an arrogant dbag. not to mention just how badly his team favors him over Weber.

also a very nice charge by Weber.

I'm not a Hamilton fan but I really, really, really don't like Vettel. I agree with you, he does come across as an arrogant ***. And you're right, the way that RB favors him over Weber is pretty bad.

I haven't seen the Indy race yet. I have it recorded so I will watch it tomorrow. Sounds like a good race though.

My thoughts exactly. Fantastic race. Weber's comment at the end of the race was comical. Words to the affect that qualifying was basically a waste of time.:D

Red Bull is definitely in control of the season at this point with McLaren possibly challenging.

a lot of my feelings toward Vettel have to do with the wing incident last year where his team just completely snubbed Weber, and that was when it really got noticeable that he was 2nd fiddle at RBR.

That and the interviews I read in print, Sebastien just comes across (even last year before the championship) as a real arrogant person.

oh well, it gives me a villain to cheer against now!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I wish I could have seen the F1 race. Last night I was desperate to watch racing and I stumbled onto the 1982 Cleveland GP on youtube. Lots to good action, too bad that dope Rahal won. Cogan had the car to beat, but he had mechanical issues. The coverage was pretty good considering there's no scrolling timing/scoring.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

oh man, I'll have to check that out. Kevin Cogan, now there's a blast from the past!

Not a Rahal fan, eh? I can take or leave him as a racer, but the one time I met him (Vintage Racing at Watkins Glen) back a few years ago he was very decent and I had a nice conversation with him.

He wasn't a hated guy, like I hated the Andretti's, just a rival to Rick Mears. If you weren't on Team Penske in the 80's and 90's, you were not liked by me. It was Penske/Mears or bust for me.

Solo - that race was pretty cool. Cogan had pole and lead the first 25 or so laps, then had problems. Then Mears and Andretti were battling it out, but Rahal bode is time and won it going away.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I have no issue with Kubica wanting to drive in other series it was just my personal view if I was in his shoes. I think I might try my hand at other racing while doing F1 if it was a top series. But it was and it seems stupid to jepordize a F1 career for a Italian rally race. Like you say, Indy would be cool, or WRC, or glup, even Daytona but some regional rally race....not worth it.

Some guys have an itch to do just about any kind of racing they can. An example being, I believe a well-known NASCAR driver drove in a Chump Car race (endurance racing of $500 cars, with essentially a nominal purse for winning) last year. There may be something about regional rally racing that the guy finds appealing, maybe in the sense of it being a race that he considers to be part of his roots as a racer.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I would have liked to have seen the Indy race in Brazil but all I got to see was a 15 lap crash-fest. :( I didn't think that anyone could do worse in a first corner on wet roads than F1 does but the Indy drivers made them look like amateurs.

From the recap it sounded like the race was kind of interesting once they got to run on Monday. Too bad I couldn't watch it.

Turkey this weekend. It will be interesting to see if Ferrari can make any improvements and if maybe Renault can cash in on another podium or  a win?

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

this one is for TimoythyA - wow I had no idea this happened. Jackie Stewart testing a Penske in 1988 Mid-Ohio

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKkLAWADrZo&feature=feedrec_grec_index

Oh man, that was awesome. Too bad the track was wert and dirty, I would have loved to see how fast Sir Jackie could have gone. Of course, being a Penske fan and hearing all the praise heaped on the team was great. Thanks a ton!

Too bad I too missed the pass filled IRL race.

With the F1 race being in Turkey, I might actually get to watch it.
