Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

:)

I'm happy but it's tempered by the fact the ride was essentially bought by his new sponsor

Him, and about half of the drivers on the grid. It's a good opportunity. Now he needs to show he has something.

I'm hearing Randy B thinks is the responsibility of Indycar to get Milwaukee back on the schedule, but also more ominously...he's seeking state support (not sure what that exactly means) and also is saying if it doesn't come to fruition this year Milwaukee should be forgotten....

what?

Hm, maybe Randy is thinking that they need the track for free or cheap?

In other news, I saw this today and thought maybe some people here could help out..

Sarah Fisher Racing Needs Help!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I am completely shocked by this one! I didn't think that Dragon Racing would have even one fulltime car let alone two. And add to that a top notch driver like SeaBass....Wow. I wonder if SeaBass wanted to stay in Indycar that bad or if Dragon is paying him a lot? From everything I have read he had a standing offer to run the LeMans series with Peugeot.

This makes more sense now that Peugeot has withdrawn from the FIA's WEC.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

So the latest chapter in the Indy off season soap opera is that there could be shortage of engines with so many teams getting put together, and on a related note, some of these news teams don't want a Lotus engine, but that all that's available since Chevy and Honda heave reached the max amount of engines that are obligated to furnish. In the end it will get worked out. The interesting thing to me was that @ $690,000 ea the mfger's are set to lose money on them. I find it hard to beleive that $6.9 million isn't enough for mfger's to break even on these engines. In addition, how can a small company like Lotus build these engines at a loss?

For a brand new engine progam, $6.9M is nothing. Unless mfger hits the nail on the head in the very first try, there will be a few versions of it. Rushed casting costs a LOT of money, let alone machining and assembly. And they have to get the prototypes done NOW (well, quite a few months ago, really)- before the main line of engines starts getting made.

GM and Honda can absorb that pretty easily- and manage to sell the engines at a net loss. Lotus? I have no idea. Unless they have the engine already done before the rules were set- I don't see how they make a competetive engine with less than $20M with such short time.

Justin Wilson back at Dale Coyne with his former engineer Bill Pappas

Rubens Barrichelo is testing w/KVM! wow

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

So it took Rubens all of a day to get up to speed in the KV car. :) And some people actually think that Indycar drivers are comparable with F1 drivers. :)

In other news, VW seriously considering F1 entry.. This would be excellent for F1 if they do.

I think maybe the top 5 in Indycar could hang with F1 guys, but you're right by and large F1 drivers are the pinnacle from the pointy end of the grid to positions 21-22. Villeneuve and Montoya were the only guys I remember having some success going the other way. and I'm not sure why guys like Zanardi, Seabass and DaMatta couldn't hack it. or for that matter Michael.

say, check this out, video of Rubens @ Sebring! http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/arti...cludes-impressive-kv-racing-sebring-test//P2/

I think in F1, it's mostly about being in the right car at the right time. Look at Rubens himself. When he got to Ferarri, he was right there with Schumi, but him in the Williams dog and he's slow. I think Schumi's just as fast as always, his Mercedes is not as good as it needs to be to beat the 3 front-running teams. Ruben's times are impressive, but at this point it's all new to everyone. I'd like to see Rubens in Will Power's car from last year on a same circuit Power ran on.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

F1 cars are starting to be shown to the general public now- http://www.planetf1.com/photo-gallery/

The Ferrari, Force India, and Chaterham are all displaying a pretty ugly step nose design to solve new FIA regs and still allow airflow under the car. Whereas McLaren does not do that- they've lowered the nose structure and seem to give up some underflow.

Interesting.

In terms of asthetics, I do hope the McLaren proves to be superior. The others are just ugly.

The Ferarri is a dog, total dog. The lego F1 cars I build from scratch look better than that. What is with the stepped nose?Where do the driver's feet sit in that thing.

The McLaren is a good looking car. I love all the little winglets on the front wing. I've always rooted against McLaren, but they've always built beautifil cars that go fast.

I'm very interested to see the noses of the rest of the cars to see which way they go.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Supposedly Sauber is also going with the humped nose also.

I am a Ferrari man, but god that car is awful looking. I hope it races fast, otherwise....I don't know. At least last season's car look good even though it wasn't particularly fast.

Sato to race for RLL in Indycar.

Il Commendatore is spinning in his grave.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

those box noses are ugly as well as the tiny rear wings which I still dislike. ugh

for Indy - w/out seeing lap times and comparisons to the old car this new one on road/street circuits certainly appears to be quick http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/video-tony-kanaan-sebring-indycar-in-car/

I've watched Kaanan and Rubens turning laps, I wish the engine had a higher pitched screech the like old CART says, but the cars don't look too bad on the track (better than the humped nose F1's for sure). My juices are getting a little flowing for some racing or at least testing with the locked in engine configurations so we can start to see how the teams stack up. Interestingly, after watching the Penske driver interviews, Power did not seem very impressed with the car, Briscoe and Helio were more impressed.

I'm going to watch the Penske interviews now. I agree 200% w/you on the engine sound. I'd like it higher pitched as well, like 94-95!

with the news of a potential 28-30 car field at every race, Rubens possibly racing, Jean Alesi at Indy and Rahal's team back I'm super excited...oh yeah, and that whole new engine war thing that seems to have piqued Ford's interest as well!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Indy engine reliability so far....I have been curious how well the new engines have been holding up. A few weeks ago Pruett mentioned Honda had a few issues, but did not provide details. Well, in this week's Robin Miller mailbag, I had a LOL response to this:

"RM: Judging by testing, I wish I had an oil dry franchise because it’s been hand grenade city and, yes, I think engine reliability will be a key storyline in 2012."

I think that answered my question. Overall, in F1 and Indy, the engines have been awesomely reliable for quite a few years now. I wonder who will be the first guy to dominate a race and have his engine blow up with 2 to go. It sounds kind of exciting in a wierd way....please just don't be a Penske.

FYP ;). Although, we wait for another year for the new F1 engines.

I am very looking forward to B6 hockey, not only do you hate my favorite race teams, you hate my hockey team too. We'll have some nice-spirited fun at eachother's expence. Just wondering, does UM change the end of the National Anthem?
