Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Wow! so assuming the flywheel option is the most used one, that's one heck of a machined part. Very interesting technology too.

I think everyone uses the electrical version now. IIRC, Williams tried the mechanical version but I think they switched to the electrical.

I am not really outraged but I got to disagree with you here. In a spec racing series I feel like it is the obligation of the sanctioning body to mandate to the suppliers that all teams capable of purchasing equipment have the ability to do so. It just looks foolish to have a team that won a race last year and has a driver and sponsor not be able to get equipment due to supply issues.

I do believe Indycar had made it known that there were a limited number of engines available, 8 per mfger, so 24 leases were there for the taking. Knowing there was a clock ticking, every person who wanted to enter needed to sign on the dotted line as soon as possible not to be left out. Obviously Lotus being late to the party threw a major wrench in the works. Had they come up with their 8, then Honda and Chevy could have handled the "overflow" easily. I think Indycar did just about the best they could under the circumstances when divying up the engines. Ideally we all would have preferred an open market on engines like the old days, but this year it isn't to be. Interestingly, all the doom and gloom about how costly these new packages were proved to be just the owners whining about costs, since the # of teams is larger than expected.

On a very positive note, the Aero rules for next year will be out in a few weeks, so there should be no areo kit supply issues next year that are hamstrung by a lack of rules. I have to think Honda has an edge here, considering their F1 history. I wonder if Chevy will subcontract this out.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Power hates the new car because of the understeer he can't get rid of (yet anyway) in the slow corners, but he's still the fastest, getting into the 1:16 bracket Sunday. It's interesting that the car is slower through the slow corners, but faster through the fast ones and is superior in braking, thus the improvement in times. With red tyres, warmer temps and more rubber down they will crush the track record there.

F1, Mercedes and Renault took advantage of a loophole in the blown diffuser regs via engine mapping, but the FIA closed the loophole. I ask why close a loophole, which by nature is legal, thus negating an honestly earned advantage?

I saw a note about that on the GPTours newsletter- apparently Mercedes are the ones who actually turned themselves in. The way that the blowing was being done was very bad for the motor, and used a lot of fuel- that, and it was totally against the spirit of the rules- especially being a pretty obvious loophole. Thus it was closed.

Speed it reporting that Rubens has signed with KV. Good news! This might force me to take a trip to Baltimore or Toronto.

EXCELLENT!

maybe when Mark Webber is ousted he can head over too?

KV suddenly looks like a real top 3-team contender if Andretti falters in any way

Baltimore took a $12M financial bath. Don't know if they want it back.

I heard some bad news today....they were running flat @ Phoenix in testing. They need to remove downforce to force them to lift. Flat out racing is boring on ovals.

At this point, I can easily see a dis toward Indyar- it's not as if it's really a world class series like it used to be. And even then, just like now, it's a place for F1 drivers to go racing after retirement. Not that there's anything wrong with it- but it's not F1, and not really GP2.

I just realized there is a race this weekend, whaahoo!

Simona tweeted tonight:

So maybe there was a car issue that is fixed and can get better times?

that would be great. I'd like to see Lotus be competitive by mid-year in terms of being able get top 10's consistently
