Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Why would I do this? I much rather **** and moan about how poorly IRL is being run! ;)

Seriously I can only afford one race car (drag). While I would love to run a road race car, I can't afford it and I am sure my wife would kill me if I even mentioned it.

As long as you have a place to go when IndyCar is on TV, all is good. Racing is racing, and as long as it turns your crank, that's all that matters.

OTOH, if you want to teach your drag racer to turn corners... ;)

It will turn corners. They just have to be at a slow speed and must have a large turning radius. That whole spooled rear end kind of hampers the turning. :D But ****, in a straight line it's FAST!

I would love to get into more of a road racing, but unfortunately my wife thinks it's a bad idea and I don't want to give up drag racing right now. Also here in Upstate NY there isn't much road racing happening. Everything is mostly oval dirt track (ugh) and some paved ovals.

Watkins Glen is only about 45 minutes away but they don't do much there except charity "paced" events or NASCAR and IRL. They only decent racing that I could afford there is vintage racing (which is coming up in about two weeks :) ). But again I don't have the money right now for that. I suppose I could sell a car or two to get into it but I am not ready to part with anything I have.

Actually, while it doesn't happen much, clubs do rent the Glen- our club looked into it once. Expensive, but there are worse tracks out there.

Since this upcoming event is including Alfas at the Glen- I would normally have been going. But that weekend is the same weekend as Monza, if you know what I mean....:D

I knew that clubs rent the Glen from time to time. I am unaware how often or who does so. I know the local Corvette clubs does but not much else.

I am excited for the Alfa's. I have not been this excited about the vintage racing weekend since it was Austin's and Bobby Rahal was in town.

Hmmmmm, Monza or the Glen....tough choice...I would go with the Glen...;)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

So I'm watching the race, and Power/Helio/Franchitti are a pretty tight 1-2-3. Then Tags starts to slide back and the producers show him tumbling back through the field. Then the producers go back to showing Power. Helio is no where to be found and Franchitti is in 2nd 3 sec back and Dixon is in 3rd.

Issue 1: When the leaders are tangling with eachother, switch to showing them.

Issue 2: When you miss the leaders tangling with eachother, SHOW A FREAKING REPLAY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!

So after a yellow and the field is bunched, suddenly Brisoe is in 2nd. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? HE WAS WAAAAY BACK IN 6TH OR 7TH. HOW ABOUT EXPLAINING IT?

Do they have a bunch of monkeys in the production truck instead of real people?

Why do I bother watching? I guess it's like an addiction. After withdrawl, I won't care anyore.

My one comments- you have to give IndyCar some credit- they could have finished that under yellow when Muhto spun, but had a fiercly waiving yellow at that corner instead. Took big chance, there, and I'm glad they did.

Versus needs to take this a lot more seriously if they want to be taken seriously. That pre-race show was one to miss- which was easy to do when seeing what was going on at RA... But even if they expand the start coverage to be good- it's no good if you can't properly cover the race.

(but then again, I was processing results while "watching" the race. So it was more background racing. And no, sadly, my car didn't make it- both times I tried to load it, it tore off the exhaust- car is too low)

Timothy A....

That had to be your rant in Miller's Mailbag about the Versus coverage, right? :)

Yeah, I wrote it here for my fellow open wheelers first, then pasted it on an email and sent it off. I am on fire with Mr. Miller. His response was pretty lame.

I sent him an email the week before about the time table required to develop and test the new car, and he personally responded to me with some info based on some unverifed rumors that he didn't feel comfortable about posting yet. Would it be a bad thing for me to post it here?

So the Owners have to the IRL to take the new car and shove it (it costs too much; they were not consulted and they are writing the checks), and the IRL has signed agreements with Honda and Dallara and is going full bore ahead. The only thing I don't get is the new car will cost less than half the current car, but the owners are saying that's too much. I guess if they stay with the current cars, they are already bought and paid for (and have been for a few years) unless a driver wipes one out. At this point I'd have to side with the IRL, only because the current cars are pathetic looking, pathetic sounding and as stale as the bread used in Grandma's dressing recipe.

So this explains why the owners were not at the ICONIC unvieling.

I'm not sure what they hope to accomplish with thier position. The cars are coming, and if they want to race, they'll have to buy them. There's no way the car can be re-hashed and done in time for the first race, plus there are signed contracts. I think it will pass with time; though Roger and Chip aren't the kind of guys who will just lay down and take their medicine.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Two open wheel races this past weekend, and still no comments?? I suppose someone should dig this up.

I totally missed the race at Chicago. Still don't know who won.

Spa was pretty cool to watch (and remember..... ;) ).

Weber had the pole, but with cluch problems, ended up 4th fairly quickly.

Hamilton has the lead by LeSarthe, and really didn't look back, much. His only questionable part was the lap he went off, and managed to keep it running, and stay in the lead. After a change to inters, he was good to go.

Bummer for Barrichelo how his day ended, but it was amazing how the Ferrari wasn't really the worse for wear. The Williams was just destroyed. And now Rubens may get penalized for that.

Alonso was set up for wet, it never got wet, and then he crashed. So much for Ferrari's #1. Masa held his spot all day.

Vettel. Good lord, child. Kind of a brain fade late brake which speared Button out of the race. I was so mad that Sebastian was able to keep gooing. But, thankfully, get got a somewhat undeserved drive through, and then ended up way out of the points. I'm really tired of his driving- he is fast, but takes chances with intimidating other drivers to concede. I really hate that, but thanks to Senna and Schumacher, I'm sure it will be a while until this garabage will go away.

All in all, I was very happy with Lewis and his win. And hope to see him in the same spot on the 12th. In person. :D

I've been too busy to comment before now. ;)

Franchitti won. It was a decent race for an oval. Briscoe had a good car as did Marco. It was nice to see Andretti cars (Other than TK) maybe getting stuff figured out.

Edit: Forgot to mention it was good to see Wheldon racing at the front too!

Jealousy makes me say "Screw you!" ;) :D

Vettel needs to grow up fast. His antics are not going to win him any Championships in the near future, let alone any friends (I hear he is one of the most disliked drivers in the paddock). If RBR didn't have the best car on the grid he wouldn't be in the top 7 or 8 in the points. It's the car that is saving his butt right now and not his driving skills (which he does have great skills when his head is on straight). I feel bad for Webber. He's still obviously the #2 driver at RBR even with leading Vettel and out driving him (overall).

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Man, did I blow a fuse when Power had to pit for fuel at the end. Penske's crew is usually flawless. That killed him in the points. I was suprised Penske didn't have Helio or Ryan do the no tyre change strategy as well. Overall it was a good race. The caution for Lloyd's spin when he hit nothing was a joke. In F1, 2 cars hit, there's shards of fiberglass everywhere, and there is only a local yellow.

F1 race was good, we had to leave for Chruch, so I missed the last 20 laps. I too was amazed Alonso's car just drove off after Rubens nailed him. Was his crash later a result of that?

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

The double hairpin is a bummer. I do like the uphill climb to turn 1.
I'd like to see a sweeping corner that slowly tightens. Maybe turns 17 & 18 would offer that in combination.

Besides the uphill into Turn 1, I don't like the circuit all that much. I don't think there is enough real overtaking places. Turn 1 looks like a good place and maybe 12 and that's about it. :(

I think Turns 16, 17 & 18 are going to have that sweeping corner feel.

What about Turn 11? Would you get enough speed up to slipstream there? I guess it depends if they can keep the gas down flat from 7 to 11.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Without having driven it, I'm going to save my passing comments until cars are actually see on it, going around.

and hope that I can go to the debut F1 race there.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

well that was one hell of a disappointing finish considering how great that race was from lap 1 until the final 2 laps.

Helio winning on fuel mileage while popular and fun for the crowd, it just sucks after having watched the next 10 people behind him duke it out at 218mph all night.

Helio was never a factor and as such was out-of-sequence with pit stops and was able to make it while everyone else had to splash and go...

Great race for Wheldon and Carpenter and Panther racing. great race for Conquest as well.

What is surprising to me is that Dan Wheldon is now without a ride for 2011
***?

oh, and Vitor Meira was 100% at fault for the 3-car accident w/Briscoe and De Silvestro. way to early in the race to try the pass he made and took Simona by surprise, it was obvious she didn't know he was there
