Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

For 2013, F1 is going with 1.6L 4 cyl turbocharger engines w/650 hp. Would it make sense for the IRL to adopt the same engines? The overall cost of the engines would drop if 2 series were using them. I suspect Bernie has some sort of non-competition lingo in the contracts. IF both series are interested cost containment, some sort of technical alliance would make sense. And why not tyres as well? Perhaps the IRL would agree only to race in the America's (preferrable North America only, but the IRL is in bed with Brazil bigtime) so they wouldn't tred on much of F1's turf.

Sadly that would kill any chance of an American F1 race probably... Also, that plan makes too much sense, so it is forbidden in Open Wheel Racing...

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting Milwaukee is back on the IRL schedule for next year. I will definately be taking my boys to see their first open wheel race if that is true.

F1 schedule...they need to condense it into a smaller timeframe. Only 2 races in June and 1 in August. On the European swing, they could do 4-5 weeks in a row of races.

I am pretty sure it will be on the schedule. I believe that the 2011 IRL schedule comes out tomorrow.

I believe there is only 2 races in June because of one bring a "fly away" race in Canada and the teams "need" time to travel.

The 1 race in August is due to the traditional holiday time of Europeans and the cost cutting two week shutdown of the teams.

From an objective viewpoint, the racing at The Glen wasn't very good was it?

Drive out to Milwaukee and me and the boys will hook up with you and do the Milwaukee race. Provided I can afford 3 tickets.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Don't forget to watch the race this weekend- and look for me. :D

I'll be the ONLY ONE with a Hamilton hat.;)

It's not a great race at the Glen but better than no race. Now I guess if I want to see a race it's off to Toronto.

Milwaukee is the one oval besides Indy that I would travel to see.

Hm, I think I would rather watch the race on TV and wear my Ferrari shirt! :p ;) :D

Sucked to be a Hamilton at the race.....great to be a Prancing Horse fan at home. :)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

I may be in the minority, but I would much prefer the race be won on the track and not in the pits.

Normally I would agree but Button had every opportunity to drive away from Alonso and couldn't so it came down to which pit crew was faster. I don't want to see that every race but every once in a while it doesn't bother me.

I think F1 made the right decision in going with no fuel stops for 2010. The next step is to not require a stop for tire changes. True racing existed in the 1960's and earlier when making a pit stop generally meant you would not win the race.

I don't like the refueling ban at all. This is just another way for the F1 to manipulate results. Same thing for the mandatory tire change. Both bad.

I miss the uncertainty, in both qualifying and the start of the race, at to who was on light fuel loads (& how light the load was) and who was not.

I like having two tires at each race, but making each car use at least one set of each is dumb.

I say let the teams make the choice as to what they want to do. If one teams wants to have a large fuel cell and no refueling and no tire changes then great. If a second team thinks it better to run light fuel and soft and quicker tires and stop to refuel and change tires then great.

I just want to see the drivers complete the race as fast as they can. I don't care how they do it.

This is one thing that always put me off about F1... For a series that bills itself as the top racing series on the planet, they always had some ***-backwards regulations regarding stuff like this...

Yea, that wasn't so great- the fans all around us stood up an cheered when it happened... OTOH, Mrs Alfa had a great time, since she was an Alonso fan.

And I have to give him a lot of credit for that drive- he took one lap to make up the difference between him and Button- that wasn't won in the pits, but won on the in lap. Pretty impressive drive, I thought.

The BBC feed we listened to interviewed Hamilton- you could tell he was pretty mad at the whole thing. At himself, BTW. He totally blamed himself.

Oh, and the Vettel thing? While it was joked to be team orders by the BBC, AFAIKT, it was real. When he went by us just after the start/finish, you could hear something was happening. Heck of a recovery drive.

Oh- Monza was awesome. They don't let you wander on the old track, but there's a lot of it still there. Totally different than Spa, but very cool in it's own way.

Red Bull probably has a secret switch they can throw to make the engine run poorly so allow Webber to pass. Or possibly a programmig signal from the pits to the black box. I really would not doubt it.

Re-fuelling...I really enjoyed the race strategy that brought about with fuel loads. I did not like the impact it had on qualifying. Qualifying should be based on light fuel loads and super sticky tyres.

On the other hand, having to race on 1 set of tyres and no refuelling would be interesting. Perhaps the IRL could look into this idea for street courses when the new rules come out. Standing starts on non-oval are a must. The starts these days have all the drama of watching paint dry.

I figured you would be crying over Hamilton's first lap mishap and the Mrs. cheering the result.

See, that just another reason to come over to the Red Side! :D

You do know that it is scientifically proven that red painted cars go faster?

Its not really that much loved- she's reluctantly a Ferrari Fan.;)

Now that we've been to multiple races- she has Renault, McLaren, and now Ferrari stuff....

And two of my Alfas are, indeed, red. And one more will be.

That's right...She's an Alonso fan first and foremost, correct?

I am sure your Alfas go fast than if they were painted silver!
