Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Any idea how many IndyCar drivers will be running next week at Daytona? I see that many DP teams have signed up Cup drivers, as usual.

Ask and you shall receive:

Graham Rahal
Scott Dixon
Dario Franchitti
Justin Wilson
Ryan Briscoe
Ryan Hunter-Reay
Raphael Matos

There are also some former OWR drivers racing also. JP Montoya and Mark Blundell for example.

The complete list is here.

and finally, Austin submits their track proposal http://en.espnf1.com/usracing/motorsport/story/36700.html
Like it..

I wonder if cars will get a bit light on the wheels as they crest the hill on the straight between T11 and 12. There was a photo years (30?!) ago showing an F1 car airborne at the Nordschlieffe(?).
If the make Turns 19 and 20 wide enough and put some banking in, you could be flat out coming out of 18 all the way up to T1. Somebody with cojones and a good engine/downforce would have a good chance at overtaking under throttle rather than breaking.

I doubt it. Unless the formula for aero changes drastically. A modern F1 car can theoretically run upside down (like on a ceiling of a tunnel, think Men in Black). They generate that much downforce. As such, I can't see then getting air as they crest that hill.

OH and it's a good day! The new Ferrari was unveiled this morning! :)

I call bull**** on Jimmie Johnson. it's not time (gimme a break the taxicab race takes the whole day already so what's 3 more hours?), that he's worried about

it's the fact he has never raced an indycar before and he's afraid he'll get his doors...er wheels taken off and look like an *** (likely).

what the media harps on is OW people not panning out as well in nascar (only the dirt track guys can do it like Mario, T Stewart, AJ, maybe Dan Gurney, etc)

what they don't ask ever is how exactly would Jimmie Johnson or the Busch brothers fair in an indycar on ANY track?

I'll answer that for them.

If the field is 26 drivers (or 33 at Indy) the nascar hero would finish no better than 12-15th.

this reminds me also of why they tried to stack the deck in IROC and overwhelm the openwheelers with like 8 nascar guys vs. two indy. they're just afraid to look like chumps. stay in charlotte man, indy is too fast for you.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

So we've seen most of the upcoming season's cars, nothing too shocking perhaps the Renault's exhaust, but the McLaren seems to be the most interesting design. Lots of interesting ductwork on it. The Willaims is interesting as well, very sculpted with a very flat nose area. I'd love to see single pictures with all the cars from the top, side, rear and front to compare the looks.

I'm worried about Schumi. They seem behind already.

****. Heck of a wreck the Kubica suffered rallying. From early reports it's lucky he's alive. I'm sure he won't race in F1 this season (if ever again). :(

So the driver's side was basically impaled by the guard rail....I watched the video in the link and it gave me the willies. Rally driving on courses like that is amazing, and that's an understatement. I think the rally drivers are the most talented drivers in the world.

The video is pretty bad. Sounds like the guard rail basically severed his right hand.

I've got to pretty much agree with you about rally drivers. They certainly are the most versitile and underrated.

Now there's a simulation on SPEED of the accident and wow does it look horrific with rail going right through the car front to back. Basically his entire right side from foot to shoulder was mangled, in conjunction, he lost a lot of blood. God bless Robert. I can't imagine what his co-driver saw and went through.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

I hope Robert Kubica recovers fully and not only that, continues racing (though I wouldn't blame him one bit if he retired).

the argument against rally racing will now be made by all leagues really against racing outside of your series.

It may derail Indycar CEO Randy Bernard's idea to lure drivers from other series to participate in the season-ending vegas race (http://www.indystar.com/article/20110222/SPORTS0107/110222013/IndyCar-Series-offers-free-tickets-5M-prize-season-ending-Las-Vegas-race?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Sports|s) as I can see the ****y taxi cab drivers claiming they're not allowed to race in open wheel due to safety concerns (fear really).

I have to admit, Randy Bernard appears to be the real deal. offering $5mil to the winner, scheduling so that the race doesn't fall on a nascar raceday, and the consistent drumbeat to get a nascar guy to crossover for a race...IZOD is extremely happy with Bernard and why not? he's making some seriously great moves here.

in other news: Kanaan is out of a ride again. he doesn't have enough sponsorship money.

so TK, Paul Tracy, Tomas Scheckter still w/out rides. that's just insane.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Interesting to see Schumacher come out of retirement; and while I've always respected him, a part of me has also felt that there should be an asterisk next to all those world championships, as it's unlikely he would have had anywhere near the same success if he'd had to battle Senna all these years - who ironically he was right behind when Senna went into the wall at Imola back in 94.

Welcome to the open wheel thread carlton...:)I understand your point, but you can't project would have beens to the final outcome. Look at Rick Mears, he had the talent to win more than 3 championships, but injury really killed his career. He won the CART championship in 79, 81 and 82, then gets his feet crushed in 84 and never wins another championship, although he still wins quite a few races, all ovals but 1. So the drivers who won the CART title after that, in my opinion, didn't beat the most talented driver because his talent was muted by injuries, but they still won the title. You could easily project Rick could have won at least 3 more titles between 84 and 92 when he hung it up. In fact in 84, he finished tied for 4th in points and he missed the final 5 races of the year. 87-91 he finished no lower than 5th and as high as 2nd in the final points, but he just could squeeze enough out of the road courses with is feet being healed but not anywhere near normal. You have to play the cards you are dealt.

FYI there is a 2011 open wheel thread, I think Matt S started it. Not that I care where we discuss, but thoughts on the upcoming season have been purcolating on that one. :)

I started it, and was focusing on the Grand Prix in Bahrain that is now canceled. So....

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Thanks for the welcome Mike :) I totally understand where you are coming from and I know that life is full of "what if's". I guess more than anything, I just wish that Senna had been around all those years to battle Schumacher. One thing is for sure though, and that is that we'll never know what could have been...

Remember that Senna was 75% (or better) on coming to the U.S. to race Indy in 95 based on what Emerson Fittipaldi has said. His main rival had retired (Prost) and he didn't seem to feel his competition was as good (for whatever reasons) and was looking for a new challenge.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

good lord. another stunt by nascar to F1.

http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/nascar/cup/news/story?id=6162176

I'm begining to think this is taxicar's response to their drivers being asked to compete at INDY or comparison's to F1, etc.

their drivers don't have the guts to race open wheel (excepting the 3-4 that actually came from open wheel backgrounds) so a closed course stunt appeases the taxicar base.

I'd love nothing more than to see 2-3 guys try that vegas race and see little e or busch in 20th place scared out of their minds of the speed and inherent danger of driving the BIG BOY CARS

I agree 100% about the Senna/Schumi matchup.
