Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

The article that Draighlicht brought up raises the question of money and OSU's hockey program. Here are some of my thoughts along those lines. In 2008 John's was the sixth highest in salary of all head coach's at Ohio State at $227,500 not including any bonus clauses in his contract or his assistant coaches and staff. The cost of hosting games in the Schott is astronomical compared to the old rink with electricity for the entire building, ice refrigeration, staffing, and all the miscellaneous expenses. We all know how much attendance has dropped the past several years so ticket and hockey merchandise sales don't even come close to keep it from going deeper and deeper in the red. OSU's athletic department is self sustaining so if the football revenue wasn't mandated to be spread around, hockey at Ohio State probably wouldn't exist. The old saying of "success breeds success" holds true. There were over 11,000 tickets sold for last Sunday's women's basketball game. I hope I'm not being delusional thinking that men's hockey could match those numbers if it was as successful as the women's basketball program. We hold the NCAA on campus indoor record for a regular season game at 17,343 in the Schott back in 2000 so were they all Michigan fans or did they just vanish off the face of the earth? I don't notice significant increase in attendance when the Blue Jackets are on the road these days so if Columbus fancies itself a hockey town then where are all the hockey fans? All they want is a winning program to bring them in. After all, no one wants to spend money watching a dead horse get whipped.

Hockeybuckeye you are correct, put a winner on the ice and the fans will come back. It should also be noted that the absence of marketing for hockey contributes to the lack of atmosphere in the Schott. This year there has been a distinct lack of marketing. The first year that you invite students into the games for free with their Buck ID and no one on campus knows about it!? What student isn't looking to find something to do thats fun and free? If the marketing dept can get the students out to the games the atmosphere will change and that should bring out more paying customers as well.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

It looks like the Buckeyes will host the first round, but the winner will have to play Miami in round 2.

If Ohio St. and Norte Dame or BG(the Falcons are playing better the second half) both win their first round, ND or BG would play Miami round two. I could see ND winning a 2 of 3, BG would be a stretch, WM not a chance unless they play one for the coach.

ND winning would be great staying away from miami is the only way i think they make it to detroit. They have beat Michigan state and should have beat Ferris up there the second night so i know they can play with either of those teams.

Marketing should give themselves a pat on the back for the military game, it was a good job. But for the rest of the season it has been horrible. Miami promotes a fun zany atmosphere, UNO goes out of their way to make it a sort of festive, family fun event. OSU is sort of..pay to get in..sleep if you want(be quit)...we will let you know who wins at the end.
I did thank the cheer leaders for coming on military night, I think this is the first time they have been there all season. Has anyone noticed that several times at the end of the second intermission to PA announcer ask fans to rise to their feet and yell for a T-shirt to be thrown at them and there were no throwers...nice one marketing dept.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

Agreed HckyDoc. It certainly seems that the only times attendance is significantly better is the games that have special promotion, military appreciation, night at the zoo, ect. They give good group rates but it seems no one knows outside of the hockey clubs and cub scouts. There was even a large absence of Michigan fans this year which was unusual although Red has his own problems this season which we won't be losing any sleep over. Perhaps marketing should make everyone aware you can actually purchase and drink beer there? lol! By the way, can anyone recall when the ticket scalpers outside the Schott disappeared? That's a warning sign in itself!

One more thing about marketing. I assume most of you OSU fans on this site are aware that Duke has and sells a much larger selection of Ohio State Hockey merchandise at the old rink than they do at the Schotts gift store?

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

Any speculation on how motivated Miami will be this weekend against Ohio State to try and regain their number one national ranking?

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

The staff needs to go out and sell the program and get top recruits to sign with Ohio State. The time to hit this hard would of been after the year they Won the Championship. That was the year to go out and sell the program to stay on top. You push hard for top recruits and bring them in on visits and sell them the hockey program and campus to. :)

I don't expect the team to win the championship every year , but at least finish near the top. Ohio State is a big campus and should be drawing more talented recruits year after year.

If the Football program can do it , then the other programs should take lessons from that program. It's the same campus for all sports.

Take a look at this years Freshmen class of recruits. The Coach has just " SHOCKED " me this year on how he has treated his new guys.

Forwards ;

Kirkland = Only gets 15 games , 1 Goal on the fourth line and is a hard worker.

A. Carlson = Only gets 9 games in the first half of season and doesn't see ice time in the second half , 1 Goal and 1 Assist on the third and fourth line and is a hard worker. Was put on power-play unit also.

McNeil = Played 25 games , 0 points and plays on the fourth line. Very low shots on net count for that much ice time

Defense ;

Krogh = Good playing time. Awesome for a Freshmen and alot of points for a young player.

Martell = Only gets 4 games on the fourth line. Hasn't even played enough to prove himself yet.

What really has confussed me this year is how the Coach has treated the whole team. Coach has not showed me any reason to keep him on payroll.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

I just won 4 tickets (2 each day) to the championships cant wait by answering that question. It would be nice to see Ohio State back there again.

They will be motivated especially after the loss this last weekend. With having the week off next week they will play hard, these two are playoff type games and the intensity is what Miami needs to show this weekend going into the playoffs.

Not all freshmen play right away, they got to earn it and show they deserve it.

As for recruits, what really looks bad on the tOSU coaching staff is the fact that Miami is coming into their backyard and getting guys. Connor Murphy from Dublin and at the USNTDP commited to Miami a few weeks ago and there is another kid, I won't mention his name, who is from the dublin area as well and played with the cbj midget AAA team has Miami high on his radar as well. I think that is more the issue that these kids out of cleveland and columbus are choosing Miami over tOSU. Kids in their backyard they need to get, and they aren't slouches either. Carter Camper and Nate Davis from Rocky River, Cody Reichard from Celina, and even Hirschfeld out of sylvania...Im not complaing lol, but I think that should be the biggest grip with this coaching staff.

I agree with you , but how do you explain the Coaches over-kill on McNeil. ( Nothing against the kid. )
Why would you over play a player with no points and very low shots on net , and play two guys less that have proven they can score.

Coach shot himself in the foot when he didn't bench the Sophmore players that needed to be. Or rotate his players more.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

It was/is some of the juniors who needed to be benched to send a message. He has consistently let, as some one said, the "chosen ones" get away with the selfish play. While he has played head games with others who could have helped this team win a lot more games. I would bet that the Hawks will come out flying after the loss last weekend.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

John has aways been irrational on who gets put in his doghouse and what for. Disappointment at being made healthy scratches eventually turns into anger and resentment towards said head coach as these kids can't rationalize it any more than we can. The group of freshmen who came in right after the championship such as Fritsche, Maiani, DeSantis, to name a few came in here and played hard and passionate the first season but by the time they were seniors some were gone and the rest bitter and hostile towards John. I can't say how they dealt with John to his face but off the ice they were very vocal against John. His senior year Fritche was complaining openly that when he came here he knew how to play hockey and what was being shoved down his throat here is crap. Cory Elkins' mother would say "If we knew then what we know now, we never would have come here!" These things and other issues haven't been secrets and have been getting back to kids playing in the juniors so there's one reason that recruiting isn't what it should be here as each new group of kids that come here eventually have similar complaints.

For every Frtische and Maiani there's a Rod Pelley, Nate Guenin, Tyson Strachan etc.

Its all about the system you play. If guys aren't willling to buy in it doesnt matter if they can score or not their will be issues there. Not sure if that is the case or not but I wouldn't necessarily assume things. Also a player isn't "proven" until after his sophmore year. So no freshman is really proven until they do it more than one year. A kid can show glimpses but to say he is proven as a freshman is a little nieve, IMO.
