OK now here's an interesting rumor. I was at OSU's women's game today and overheard a couple of WCHA officials talking on how Markell may try to coach at his Alma Matter of Bowling Green. Any speculation on that scenario? :D

Open Letter to Gene Smith:

Dear Gene,
Western Michigan just fired their coach, Jim Culhane, who has been ineffective for virtually all of his 11 years in Kalamazoo. Seems eerily familiar, doesn't it? Occasionally a remarkable recruiting class shows up in Columbus, thanks to the hard work of assistant coaches (who, I might add, have all left), and the chemistry of the kids clicks and a decent season happens. Not often enough in Columbus given the facilities, reputation (of the school, not the hockey program), educational opportunities etc that are The Ohio State University. Imagine if you had competent coaching too? Dare I think it - regular post-season play beyond the first round of the CCHA playoffs? Fans in the stands at the Schott? Dare to dream, Gene, dare to dream. There are many fantastic coaches out there, Gene. For the love of God (if you are so inclined) and/or The Ohio State University, please, PLEASE pick one.

Please get rid of this guy. He is a joke. I dont think you can find anyone that respects him. Its JB's turn. He has what it takes. Give him a chance. But please get rid of Markell.

I know we're all desperate for a new coach but JB??!! Come on, lets be serious and push for someone who's a real coach. JB's there only because he's kissing Johnnie heinie. Simply way too young and too inexperienced.

With BG beating ND in a shootout a win tonight locks up at least 9th place. Even if ohio state and Notre Dame tie at 39 points ohio state would have 1 more win which is the 1st tie breaker.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

Bishop for OSU- Gill save
Roehl for WMU- Carlson save
Dalpe for OSU- lost the puck on the deke/Gill save
Campbell for WMU- Carlson save
Albert for OSU- Gill save
Crew for WMU- Carlson save
Somma for OSU- Gill save
Squires for WMU- shot wide
Stefishen for OSU- Gill save
O'Kane for WMU- Carlson save
Boyd for OSU- OSU goal
Elias for WMU- Carlson-GREAT SAVE

Carlson and Heeter are so equal, but Dusty took them to the NCAAs, need to ride him rest of the season. Had big saves tonight

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

OSU gets the win 4-3 in a shootout with Boyd getting the winning goal. His was the only score by both sides in the shootout and he was what, 6th shooter I believe. Either OSU player poorly against the last place team having to come back in the 3rd or Western had something to prove with their effort tonight.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

Sounded to me like they played really bad at times tonight and really well at other times of the game. Once again inconsistent play at important times and bad penalties cost them tonight. They did get 2 points though and no matter what happens in alaska they will have 8th place going into next weekend. Miami will be a very angry team coming into next weekend with the loss they had tonight. With Lake State playing a very good northern michigan team next weekend on the road I think 1 point will get that 8th spot. 7th is probably out with michigan's come from behind win tonight giving them 40 points (2 points ahead of the bucks) to get ahead of them they would need probably 5 points and a sweep by ND over michigan next weekend.

Its pretty easy to see that you know nothing about the ohio state hockey team. I dont think that anyone kisses Johnys anything. And how would you know anything about what JB can/could do.

And not to mention there is a team a little bit south of us that hired a coach when he was young, I think 27 or 28 and they seem to being doing ok. If being ranked number one in the country is considered doing ok.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

Just to clarify, 'cause some posters on this thread seem to have difficulty with quoting other posts and are including erroneous stuff that I did not assert, I think we need a completely new coaching staff. No Markell, no Brent, no JB. Fresh start. Could be a young guy, could be a vetran coach, I don't care as long as they are competent and passionate about OSU hockey.

Go Bucks.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

Looking at the standings today hard to predict OSU gets any more points. I suppose beating the last place team this weekend could give them some momentum. So assuming no pts for OSU does LSSU needs 3 or 4 pts at NMU to get to 8th place? Does ND needs 5 or 6 against UM?

For LSSU it depends on how they get tied with Ohio St. if they win 1 game and ohio state gets 0 points to tie at 38 then LSSU would have more league wins. If they get 3 points with a Shoot-out win and shoot-out loss then it goes to the series and it was 1-1. The next tie-breaker is total goals for and each team had 6. Then it goes to the next tie breaker which is best winning % vs the top teams. Both lost all games vs miami(we are assuming ohio state gets beat twice this weekend) now it gets tricky if Ferris is the 2nd place team the tie breaker goes to Lake St.(1-1 to osu's 1-2-1) if Michigan state is the 2nd place team then ohio state gets the tie breaker(1-1 to 0-1-1 for Lake St.)

If its Notre Dame that the tie is with then its simple they won the series 1-0-1. So ND will only need 5 points to tie and beat out the Buckeyes for the 8th spot.

Hope that clears things up for you.

Perhaps I was a little harsh with heinnie kissing but John would never hire a former player of his JB's age without there being a certain complacency of attitude towards said head coach. JB will make a fine head coach someday but I do know he is not ready to lead the program at Ohio State. As far as what I know about Ohio State hockey is this, I'm one of the few people still alive and living in central Ohio who was there at the inception of Ohio State hockey in the early 60's and was also there when it was a club team prior to NCAA certification. I skated with George Burke at the old outdoor seasonal rink on what is now the front lawn of Chemical Abstracts before Ohio State had a rink so I do indeed know Ohio State hockey like few do and have only decided to post because I am sick and tired of OSU being years behind where it should be in prominence and performance in hockey due pretty much to it sticking way to long with a head coach who couldn't do the job of running a program that should have us at least finishing in the top five of the conference on a fairly regular basis. Some people may not like what I have to say but it is based on a VERY in depth experience of the program and those who have played in it and if we get a new coach who is successful and gets us where we should be I'll probably no longer post. So lets all be friends who are of like mind that coaching change is the only salvation of the program. We can indeed speculate on who should replace John but it's all irrelevant if the primary objective of John moving on isn't met.

True, but I think it's kind of apples and oranges as that coach and the individual at OSU are two completely different people and that we're relying on age as the common denominator. That coach did only have sporadic success his first five seasons but tremendous success in the last five including NCAA berths every one of those last five. So I guess my counterpoint is how long would you want to wait as a fan of Ohio State hockey for a young coach to come into his own?

Ferris State has clinched a fifth place spot in the CCHA. At worst Ferris can tie Michigan for 4th place, but the Wolverines would go ahead in the standings because of Conference wins. So Ferris would be in 5th place with home ice advantage.

All the 'Dawgs need is 1 point, a shootout lose, and they will clinch first round bye in the CCHA.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

Arpod is right a house cleaning is in order. KLB, thanks for the info on OSU's chances of hanging onto 8th place. It seems like a very tough road for ND or LSSU to get enough points to push OSU to 9th. It looks like the Buckeyes will host the first round, but the winner will have to play Miami in round 2. Unless OSU can steal some points this weekend and some how move up to 7th... Coming off two wins is nice, but Miami is not WMU and OSU struggled to win both nights. It's hard to feel confident about a one goal game and a come from behind tie/shootout win against the worst team in the league. WMU had really nothing to play for and a lame duck coach still on the bench?!
