Markell Contract

Markell Contract

Can anyone confirm that Markell's contract is up after this season? I found a statement from 05 which suggests it is, but I want to double check and make sure there was nothing else added on. Also, has Gene Smith said anything about an extension or Markell's status?

OSU's Markell inks five-year extension

April 5, 2005
Ohio State coach John Markell has received a new five-year contract, effective immediately. The new deal replaces Markell's prior contract, which had one season remaining.

Markell just completed his tenth full season as the Buckeyes' head coach. He owns a 200-173-32 career record and has led the team to five NCAA Tournament appearances (1998, 1999, 2003, 2004 and 2005) and a NCAA Frozen Four berth in 1998. He also guided OSU to the 2004 CCHA Super Six tournament title

In 2004-05, the Buckeyes posted a 27-11-4 mark – tying for the second-most wins in program history – and finished second in the CCHA regular-season standings, the team's best conference showing in more than two decades.

There has been no other 'announced' extension.

Gene Smith's standard line - "We review each coach's performance after each season."

Draighlicht's standard line: "Gene, if you're reviewing this season all you need is Cliff's Notes."

Open Letter to Gene Smith:

Dear Gene,
Western Michigan just fired their coach, Jim Culhane, who has been ineffective for virtually all of his 11 years in Kalamazoo. Seems eerily familiar, doesn't it? Occasionally a remarkable recruiting class shows up in Columbus, thanks to the hard work of assistant coaches (who, I might add, have all left), and the chemistry of the kids clicks and a decent season happens. Not often enough in Columbus given the facilities, reputation (of the school, not the hockey program), educational opportunities etc that are The Ohio State University. Imagine if you had competent coaching too? Dare I think it - regular post-season play beyond the first round of the CCHA playoffs? Fans in the stands at the Schott? Dare to dream, Gene, dare to dream. There are many fantastic coaches out there, Gene. For the love of God (if you are so inclined) and/or The Ohio State University, please, PLEASE pick one.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Arpod:D

It could be " WORSE " , as I sit here and watch Tiger Woods asking for forgiveness.

OK , The future should be brighter next year with OSU getting a new Coach and Tiger keeping his pants on. :o

99% agree with you! Some of the good recruits were the result of Steve Brent's work and I think that he and JB can bring in the talent. The only question I would have is where do their loyalties lie? If they are strictly loyal to Markell, then they must go also, but if they are loyal to themselves, and if Markell thinks enough of them to tell them to stay and not follow him out the door, then they should at least be given the opportunity to stay with the new coach.

They are two of the favorite players in OSU hockey history and given a good head coach/leader, I think that both of them would blossom. I do not think that either of them has the experience to be the type of assistant that Markell needs/needed, but they were good at bringing the good players in and dealing with the players themselves. Now we just need a leader at the top to fit it all together!!

Come on Bucks, get some points this weekend so we can all snuggle into the Ice Rink. Yes I know we still have 2 games next weekend but come on.. Of course I am not even sure if would get 6 this weekend if that would ensure 8th place.

Just listened to Markell's preview of the Western series and he said Duddy is done for the year?? Anyone know why? Though he is not very offense-minded, I think Duddy has been one of the most reliable defensemen tOSU has had this year. Unspectacular but makes the simple play and outlet passes. Rarely turns the puck over. Wins battles on the boards, a big body, long reach, doesn't get beat wide. Serious bummer. :(

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

We've all seen the roller coaster over the years that unfortunately is the definition of Ohio State hockey - no consistency. No one can deny that some very talented young men have been strong contributors to the program so lack of talent is not the negative factor and with all that have come and gone over the years the only constant that remains unchanged is John Markell. John remains due only to the athletic director's office having a low standard of what constitutes a successful program for sports outside of football, basketball, and maybe baseball. Steve's contribution to the program is recruiting, JB's is basically motivation but if they have anything else to add that could actually teach these kids it's stifled by John insisting that it's always his way alone. As far as a letter to Gene Smith, how many of you are aware of the letter that was drafted to Andy Geiger the year OSU won the Super Six? It was a scorcher that would have brought things to light that John would have had a hard time defending and it was drafted and signed by most of the parents of the players. It was never delivered as with the Super Six and the NCAA berth in John's pocket it was felt it would be largely ignored as at that moment John was the golden child in the AD's eyes. He has never been anything other than at best mediocre as a coach, getting the wins only when talented individuals step up to make plays happen as what he teaches for team play wouldn't work in any level of hockey as we are witness to every weekend.

I disagree.

Look no further than wrestling and men's track and field. Both coaches were replaced once their contracts expired. All the new wrestling coach did was finish second in the NCAA for two consecutive years. The new T&F coach is quickly rejuvenating that program.

Markell is in the last year of his contract. Until I hear that the contract has been renewed / extended I will look to those two other sports as a ray of hope for hockey.

I saw him on crutches last weekend. I'm going with a leg/knee injury.

:(

On a more positive note, the boys came out ready to play and snagged 3 critical points tonight. Nice to get scoring from Shafer. We need points from more than just the first line and occasionally the second. Shafer has been working hard lately and putting up points. I for one would like to see more of him on the ice (Schneider, Stefishen and Kirtland too). Let's hope they keep it going tomorrow too.

We all want that ray of hope and I wasn't really trying to be specific that those are the only sports that get preferential treatment but I still think there is no equity between sports for the most part at OSU when it comes to how long they give a coach to produce something worthwhile. One example is the softball coach there went 11 years before her first and only conference title and still has her job and I believe she came on board about the same time as Markell. It's easy for an athletic director to speak of their "high standards" when he's secure in his job making three times as much money as he's worth.

Arpod, I agree with you Duddy is a very steady D who helps by covering for some of the more offensive-minded D-men. His contributions may not always show up on the score sheet but what doesn't show up on the score sheet for the opposition is equally important. He seems to be snake bit injurywise, let’s hope for a speedy recovery. Good job by the team last night. Don't read too much into beating Western, that team has to be in total disarray with the dismissal of their coaches...if there is a God then there is hope for OSU fans.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

With the win last night Ohio State's odds of hosting increased dramatically. It would take an OSU loss tonight combined with a Lake Superior loss for it not to happen. It's certainly nostalgic to see them play in the old rink but most of the players feel insulted that they get kicked off their home ice for a high school event.

I wouldnt go that far just yet. Even if they win tonight and lake state lose's they are only 4 points ahead of Lake State going into next weekend. With Miami on the horizon next for the bucks i wouldnt lock up 8th place just yet.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

I think LSSU and ND have a possibility to move ahead of OSU even if OSU wins today. After todays games it might be clearer.

You're completely right. MAJOR senior moment to forget what scenerios could play out next weekend. "IF" we do host we're luckey I suppose the women's team wouldn't need the old rink, they get priority with it being their home ice. :o

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

after tonight's games here what's left for the three teams battling for #8

Notre Dame has a home and away with Michigan
OSU has a home and away with Miami
Lake State has two games at Northern Michigan

Tonight could possibly be the last win for any of those teams.

Pretty sad scenario that we are all on here looking for how the Buckeyes can finish eighth instead of worrying about winning the legaue or even getting into the NCAA tourney. Very sad.

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

UNO must lose tonight and against Miami and most likely will happen. After tonight the Mavs CCHA season is over. OSU gets 3 points tonight would put them at 39, a mere win next WE and the Buckeyes finishes above ONU with 42-41 points. I don't know, beat the Redhawks?
Lake St. needs to rebound against Alaska and a 42 point season would tie the Buckeyes with the Nanooks since Alaska will finish their CCHA season tonight as well.
I'm just trying to come up with a 7th place scenario. A 7th place finish ensures that they will not play Miami if they get to the second round. This team is talented enough to beat anyone in the conference 2 of 3,except for Miami, they are capable of winning both 1st and 2nd round series and going to the Joe.
