Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Has anyone heard any offseason rumblings? Anyone leaving (transferring or moving onto the next level)? Could someone list our incoming recruits for the 2012-2013 season here and their positions/accolades, etc.? We have four guys coming in, correct?

Here's a 30 second video of Craig Dalrymple, a 6'7" defenseman that will be on campus next fall.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnwZWmQcAXk

They have four, signed letters of intent for next season, but that doesn't mean that all four will be on campus, or that there won't be more.

One commit, Kevin Irwin, is currently suspended by the USHL since he was charged with assault in a fracas with a couple of other players and a 79 year old fan.

According to the Heisenberg site, there are six, possibly seven incoming for 2012, including 3 D and 1 goalie.

Draighlicht, thanks for that video ... kid looks good. What a cannon! MUhawks, thanks for sharing regarding Kevin Irwin, despite it being bad news. I would imagine he blew his 'ship with that move. What a shame. Sportsfan1, we only had four seniors this season, so that would indicate some guys are leaving or there will be some sort of attrition, would it not?

It is possible they may defer one or two of them however the coach has shown in the past his willingness to release players so its wait and see...

Well, after the second half meltdown, if I were some of the players, I would definitely be concerned about my status for next season.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

A couple of things:
1) Ben Gallagher reportedly is leaving OSU and will be going to the WHL.
2) NO MATTER WHAT: Not making the NCAA tourney is a huge disapointment when considering the position the team was in prior to Christmas break.
3) If anyone would have suggested 15-15-5 at the beginning of the year with 12 freshman and a transfer would anyone have been disapointed in the outcome?
4) This is my take on the tailspin:
a) First half no one excpected the Buckeyes to be much of a force. They were the number one surprise of college hockey. When they returned from Christmas break the makeup of the team is totally differnt then the first 1/2. They began the second half as the team to beat. There was no more sneaking up on anyone.
b) Curtis Gedig played the second half the year with a very bad shoulder. I believe he had a torn labrum and is having surgery. He was probably 60-70% at best. His injury was critical as not only was he the number one defender but it also made other players better. When he became injured it forced players to take roles they were either not capable of playing or not ready to play yet. It was a big hit for a team that was regulerly playing 3 freshman on any night at D.
c) Losing Danny Dries to a high ankle sprain was very devastating as well. He was the leading scorer and the energy player for the Buckeyes. On occasion Danny would take a bad penalty but his energy and goal scoring ability were greatly missed by the team.
All teams go through injuries but to a very young team these injuries are magnified especially when the injured players took such prominate roles.
Following the team closely I was always impressed with the approach of the players and coaches. They never gave up, didnt appear to be folding, and from what I could tell it did not appear there was any arguing or bickering amongst the team.
Although a very disapointing finish to a season I am looking forward to watching this team next year and see the steps forward.
This coaching staff has the credentials to advance this program and already have. This is a talented group of freshman and there is more talent on the way.

On 1. It is interesting that Gallacher's father is/was involved in the ownership of the WHL Portland team, but initially chose the college route.

If Gedig was injured, or not 100 percent, why was he in the lineup? Why not utilize a healthy player from the roster?

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

I believe that Ohio State has a bright future also. However...

North Dakota also had a huge freshman class and had a lot of injuries. 18 players that were on last years North Dakota team were not available at the end of this season. North Dakota played without a full bench for most of the second half of the season. They even had to bring in walk-on players at mid-season to help fill roster spots. But even with all that adversity North Dakota started out like a lamb and ended like a lion, everyone, and I really mean everyone, that could dress for North Dakota stepped up and had some big shoes to fill but they all worked hard and believed in the system.

Maybe Ohio State hockey does not have the long history that North Dakota has in developing hockey players, but the Ohio State coaches need to motivate and develop all of the players so that they are playing their best hockey at the end of the season. Seems like something needs to be fixed. If it isn't fixed soon you may lose some recruits to other programs.

+100

The problem I saw with this team is that it clearly did not get better as the season went on, it regressed. Something definitely needs to be fixed as this is the second year in a row that we've seen our team regress in the second half of the season. It's up to the coaching staff to figure this out and move the program forward, and I am sure they will. I agree that the future is bright.

Preseason prediction for North Dakota on USCHO - one writer says 3rd, one says 4th in WCHA. North Dakota finishes regular season...4th in WCHA.

Preseason prediction for Ohio State on USCHO - 9th in CCHA. Ohio State finishes regular season...9th in CCHA.

I stipulate for the court that both are young teams and had injuries.

I am perplexed by the hand wringing and naval gazing. To paraphrase the philosopher king Dennis Green, perhaps at the end of the day, the Bucks are who we that they are.

They were out of the this world in the first half, but alas, regression to the mean is a *****.

Puck Buck, what is your take on expectation levels. Despite the second half collapse, we did finish 19th in the PairWise. Should we expect an NCAA Tournament bid next season, or are we still aiming too high? At what point should we expect this program to move forward and start being a regular in the NCAA Tournament? I'm not even talking about Frozen Fours, here, just wondering when we can expect to actually take the talented players that Coach Oz is recruiting and mold them into an NCAA Tournament team? My opinion is that this team and coaching staff should figure out the second half meltdowns from the past two seasons (and eliminate them), and be an NCAA Tournament team in 2012-13. We won't be able to use the young team excuse next season. I believe in the coaching staff completely, but I think it's fair to expect results on the ice in the third year.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Generally speaking, I give Oz a pass on last year - he didn't have a single player he recruited on the roster. Accountability started this year, but with severe limits. He had a bunch of players, but all freshmen save for Hjelle. It starts in earnest next year. I would expect a NCAA tournament appearance, but that cam be tricky. Improvement would probably work for me. The following year i expect all in. NCAA birth expected from there going forward, with occasional run at FF. Continue to recruit with the big boys, playing high end hockey and being in the ball park of the traditional elite programs even if i think being consistent with that in a stacked B1G will be difficult.

I am sure not all will agree.

In looking at this year, I know the meltdown was historic - but frankly what happened in the first half was unbelievable and I think the credit that is deserved isn't there because of the meltdown - but it was **** impressive,

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Only one season to go until the new conference play starts and Oz knows the level he has to get this team to in order to not be the conference whipping boys. His success with other programs shores up his credentials and in no way am I throwing him under the bus at this point in time. Ricco had 6 crappy seasons at Miami before it all started clicking. Hockey is a different beast compared to football where a program can be turned around quickly and all I can say is if you didn't learn patience when Markell was here then buy some valium.

It's funny you mention Markell, and not that I want him back, but Markell took us to a Frozen Four in his third season (1997-98). As for Oz, I don't think anyone here is throwing him under the bus after only two seasons.

But no one, not even Markell thought we'd have a Frozen Four team that season and although as you say no one is throwing Oz under the bus yet My perception from the tone and dissatisfaction of some posters they may be buying rope and looking for a nice tall tree if next season isn't to their liking. Gotta have patience people!

I believe next year should be an NCAA Tournament year, but I won't be buying any rope, nor will anyone see me swinging from one of my trees if an NCAA Tournament berth doesn't materialize. My hope is that we actually see the team get better as the season goes on, not the other way around. If we show improvement as the season goes on, I will be fine with that even if it doesn't result in an NCAA Tournament appearance. I tend to agree with you that it may take some time for Coach Oz to get us to that point and am willing to wait it out. Coach Oz has been a winner at every level and I am pretty sure he didn't suddenly forget how to coach a winning, championship-caliber hockey program. I'll be the first to admit I have been a tad critical of this past season and how it played out, but I am 100% in Coach Oz's corner and still believe he will take this program to the next level (regular NCAA Tournament appearances, some Frozen Fours).
