Ohio State Next Coach?

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Welcome Mark! Sounds like his style of hockey will be a good fit for taking the Buckeyes to the next level.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

This is an outstanding hire for OSU. Osiecki had been a top assistant at the NCAA level, a successful Tier I junior head coach and has a solid recruiting network. He's also someone the fans in Columbus will like, straight shooter, standup guy. The CCHA race just got a little tougher for the rest of the league.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Why was Paluch not ready? BG hasn't had a winning season since '96-'97 at 17-16-5. That says more about the BG program than it does Paluch individually.

The year before he was fired, BG went a respectable 18-21. Not sure what happened after that...

I talked to a couple of BG fans right after Paluch final game. They told me Paluch had basically lost control of the team. a couple of team members left mid season because of him.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

I agree that you all got a good coach in Mark Osiecki. I watched him play and coach at Wisconsin, and I actually thought he wouldn't make a bad pick for Western Michigan's vacancy.

Sad to see him leave the Badgers, though.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Congrats to Oz and I'm sure that he will do a fantastic job at OSU. As a Badger fan I hate to see him go but he's too good of a coach to remain an assistant.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

From USHR:

"We're getting two different reports on Gwozdecky's not being hired, one indicating his price tag was too high -- even for OSU -- and the other saying that he slept on it, and decided to stick with Denver. More likely, it was some combination of the two. And, of course, there could well be reasons we may never know of."

Heard reason number 1 from reliable sources. I love the choice they made, but hearing they wouldn't fully commit makes me a bit worried. Sounds like OSU is hoping flesh blood will get them somewhere without having to spend to get to elite status. I hope they are right!

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

One reason to not hire an Eastern candidate is the fact that their recruiting networks may not be congruent to the areas from which OSU traditionally is strong in that department.

Where would that be?

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

I believe damage has been done and feelings have been hurt between Gwoz and the DU athletic department in a stand off that has gone on for much longer than you elude to.

Major damage has not been done.

If this is true, OSU really blew it. OSU can afford him. My only guess he wanted all of his assistants with big multi-year contracts, OSU refused. Or he wanted 4 football tickets included, OSU refused. Or he wanted 100% backing from the athletic Dept. and was told. "we gave Markell 50% backing...at best. but we'll give you 70%."

Time to quit thinking about who OSU didn't hire and start thinking about what we will see on the ice come October.

Playing for Osiecki has got to have the d-men excited.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

This should be a good hire for OSU. Looking at what he had done with the D at Wisconsin and the success he has had everywhere he has been is very encouraging. I have heard a lot of positive things about him. I look for him to eliminate the selfish play that plagued this team in past years under Markell. Did he announce any assistants yet? Is he keeping either of the current guys?
