You just described the current coaching salary situation at OSU...

And as for the Casey Jones situation...Casey was smart to get out before the ship went down. He gave himself a chance to return with new credentials and a couple years of experience under a different system. This is what CJ needed to set himself up as a head coach candidate.

My preferences are:
1. Gwoz (still think he is really applying and don't believe the article)
2. Jones
3. Put Oz and Cav in a hat and pull a name
4. Another assistant from a top 10 program yet unnamed
5. A head coach from a successful USHL franchise
6. Markell
7. Pooley

OK, I'll take the job, OSU needs someone in charge who will promote hockey.
List of things to do:
1. Hire Gowz
2. Bring back the OHC; year one well be outdoors in Ohio Stadium.
3. Build a hockey only facility, what building do I knock down? Jack Nicklaus museum, replace with Jack Nicklaus Ice Center.
4. "Carol Cartwright slap shot night" when Bowling Green comes to town.

Casey HAD to leave. Markell was a sinking ship, and if he stays here and rides out the end of Markell's tenure he never gets a chance at the HC job here. Be honest, if he had been here for these past three seasons nobody would want him to e essentially promoted tohead coach.

I loved Casey, although not sure if they should hire him. I think they need to go in a whole different direction. The only good thing is that none of hte players left here were players under him so they may not view it as the same 'regime.'

If Gwoz was unhappy at Denver why did he spend all year trying to renegotiate a contract that doesn't expire until 2014?

Why would he leave best ever incoming recruiting class to go to Ohio State?

If he wants to leave Denver, why not wait until next year when the Michigan State, Michigan or Minnesota jobs might be available?

OBTW, if you want to hire a coach like Gwozdecky, you'll need to bring the whole "posse" along. He'll want his assistants, trainers, managers, charter flights, upgraded recruiting budget & Hockey Operations people. Figure about $1 million per year. Not saying that Ohio State can't afford it, but you'll need to start drawing more than 500 fans to a game.

At the end of the day, the Ohio State job is a young man's game. It will take someone with a tremendous amount of mojo to turn it around and bring in the fans.

OSU primarily uses charter flights, and often they use the Columbus Blue Jackets' plane when that team is playing at home. They still average over 3K per game despite the last three years of the Markell regime.

The point here is that OSU has the financial ability to spend far more than Denver. You don't want to get into a money battle with this athletic department. The only question is "do they want to spend the money."

I don't think they will, but if they do the $$$ won't be the reason that your guys stays at home.

Gwoz' only daughter is 16 which is not the age you'd want to move out of town, either.

I think any of the 3 mentioned are going to have to prove they can be "THE" head coach, where as the bigger name established coach would have added some instant credibility.

I agree with HckyDoc...an assistant or young guy isn't the answer...look how well Scotty Paluch did at BG.

Be honest, the reason Casey left is really unknown. The Sinking Ship is a conspiracy theory pushed by the anti-Markell group. One theory was that the Cornell head job was about to open. Last, he may have just wanted to return home. The real reason will most likely be never known.
All I know is that the year Casey left, OSU made the NCAA's, ship was still afloat.
Lammers left because he got a better deal elsewhere. OSU won't give assistants multi year contracts, except in football and basketball. I'd feel better if OSU would have Given Lammers a two year deal. He still would be here and that would mean a hockey person would be looking over the program right now. Is anyone making sure players are hitting the weight room? Short sightedness by the AD.

HAHA

OSU did not charter a single flight last year. And the only one that they chartered the year before was to the NCAAs. And the NCAA pays for that. If OSU is getting 3k plus. What would it be like if they had a 4000 seat arena? Sold out every night? A bit of excitement in the building? Has anyone confirmed the people OSU has interviewed. I havent seen anything in stone.

Making a whole lot of assumptions here...

1. If he had to spent all year trying to renegotiate with Denver why would he be happy? Did he get it done?
2. I know you think that hockey coaches like Gwoz can just make demands willy nilly wherever they go - the truth is that he would probably leave his trainer and secretary at Denver if the deal was right for him here.
3. The CCHA doesn't travel by plane - everything is within 6 hours bus ride except Alaska and the UP schools. While you might think flying is better, in reality it can be more exhausting, more work with less flexibility and end-to-end still cost 6 hours of travel time. Some coaches feel the bus trips are an important team bonding activity and use them to their advantage.
4. OSU has never taken a back-seat on recruiting budgets, or any budgets for that matter - not to anyone. In fact, budgets have never been a limiting factor on the program with the exception of chartering flights and building a rink. The finances for the two programs come from very different structures - I'm pretty sure your football program isn't contributing over $65 million per year to your athletic department and the department as a whole is not supporting 36 sports and making $3 million in annual profit. Also, Magness was not cheap - I'm sure the debt service on that building is no drop in the bucket. I don't know if hockey ticket sales at DU are paying the bills or if they have other resources, but OSU's multi-purpose (multi-income) building is paid via a variety of income streams (not to mention the 18,000 we pack into men's basketball games). Bottom line - don't expect OSU to shake at spending a few extra dollars IF THEY WANT TO ELEVATE THE PROGRAM.


Like I said before - there are a lot of reasons why a coach like Gwoz might leave what seems like a perfect situation. While we can all speculate that leaving would be like trading all your draft picks for Tim Tebow - none of us really knows what's on his mind.

Denver is a private school, and there is no real pressure on the athletic department to bring in more revenue than it spends. Denver hockey does make a couple of million more than it costs, but the entire athletic program at Denver is a $25 million operation, so hockey will never play all the bills and that's fine. Athletics here are more about opportunity and community building than they are about making big money. Gwozdecky is the highest paid person at the whole University, and I'm sure DU can (and will) do whatever it takes financially to keep him here.

He's had chances to go to Wisconsin (his alma mater) and Michigan State (where he coached as an assistant and where his wife is from) and turned them both down. Today, he's got a very comfortable situation - he makes top 3 money in his field, he's got the flagship program at the school and there is very little pressure on him in this market. I think the next step for him (if he wants it) is the NHL, but I think he'd probably be just as happy with another 5-10 years here.

When OSU flies they use charters. The fact that most none of last season's games required flying doesn't mean they don't use charters.

And the average attendance for last season was a little better than 3K plus. We will probably never know what it would be like if they had a 4K arena unless you build them one.;)

Doubt that you ever see a concrete list of who they talked to.

I like your ideas although I don't think we will be getting Gwoz. I'm actually a litle disappointed that we are going after assistants and not head coaches. Number 2 would be cool, although I think we need to raise the level of our program before we think about doing an outdoor game. Number 3 is something the university really needs to think long and hard about if they truly want this program to be championship caliber. I really like number 4 although I would change it to Greg Christopher slap shot night! Christopher was the one who wanted to drop their hockey program so if you make it Greg Christopher slap shot night, you may get more BG fans (LOL)!

Where do you get your information from? They do NOT charter flights. Didnt you hear about all the problems they had flying to Alaska last season? Osu needs to get serious about hockey and build a rink for them.

I think we will find out who they interviewed at some point down the road.

You may wish to check YOUR information. When teams go to Alaska, the University of Alaska pays for and books the flights on commercial airlines, usually a combination of Delta/Northwest and Alaska Airlines.
