Ohio State Next Coach?

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Even worse, Delcastillo at Alaska, one disastrous year and done. If not Gwoz, bring in Smith and let Jones go to a starter school like Canisius.

You'd rather have Dave Smith - a guy who hasn't won at Canisius .... instead of Casey Jones, a 20-year D-I assistant who has been to the NCAAs 7 times, and practically ran the show at OSU?

yeesh

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Be honest, the reason Casey left is really unknown. The Sinking Ship is a conspiracy theory pushed by the anti-Markell group. One theory was that the Cornell head job was about to open. Last, he may have just wanted to return home. The real reason will most likely be never known.
All I know is that the year Casey left, OSU made the NCAA's, ship was still afloat.

Well, you really need to read between the lines of things .... http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2008/12/09_keeping.php ... but it seems clear -- Cornell had an opening - the alma mater called - and he went .... a) it's the alma mater ... b) it's not really a step down ... c) he gets out from under the Markell albatross, so he can start making his own mark.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Not sure I believe them based on what has been reported by CHN and people familiar with the Denver program, but USHR.com is reporting that Gwozdecky is absolutely a candidate.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

You may wish to check YOUR information. When teams go to Alaska, the University of Alaska pays for and books the flights on commercial airlines, usually a combination of Delta/Northwest and Alaska Airlines.

Yes you are right. They do pay for the flights. They dont pay for you to charter a flight. Come on.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Gwozdecky is the highest paid person at the whole University, and I'm sure DU can (and will) do whatever it takes financially to keep him here.

FALSE. According to USHR, your basketball coach, Joe Scott, makes the most money and DU's unwillingness to renegotiate Gwozdecky's contract, to make him the highest paid employee, has led him to look for greener pastures. You can't blame Gwoz for wanting to get paid because hockey is DU's number source of income in the athletic program and should be paid accordingly. Gwoz has been ****ed since they hired Scott and gave him a more lucrative deal so Gwoz has been trying to renegotiate ever since.

Gwozdecky was in Columbus on Wednesday. It is not his style to interview for another position just so his current employer will sweeten the pot. Anybody who has met Gwoz knows that. I believe damage has been done and feelings have been hurt between Gwoz and the DU athletic department in a stand off that has gone on for much longer than you elude to.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

I really like number 4 although I would change it to Greg Christopher slap shot night! Christopher was the one who wanted to drop their hockey program so if you make it Greg Christopher slap shot night, you may get more BG fans (LOL)!

Good point. So the Friday night game we would make Carol Cartwright slap shot night. Saturday would be Greg Christopher Chuck-A-Puck night.

In some venues a who constantly stands runs the risk of being ejected. My next change would be the fan who constantly yells "down in front" runs the risk of ejection.

Smith and Jones. I'd easily take Smith over Jones. No question. Last I checked Jones has won nothing. If he is the man, why didn't BG hire him. Even better, why didn't W Mich hire him. He's not good enough for those programs but is the man at OSU. Let's hope not.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

I agree with HckyDoc...an assistant or young guy isn't the answer...look how well Scotty Paluch did at BG.

So you are making a blanket assumption based on Scott Paluch? That's ignorant. Some assistants are ready and meant to be heads, some aren't. As a follower of BC I could tell you Scott was not ready, Cav is a whole different story. OSU would be lucky to get this guy before anyone else. Pooch never had head coach potential, Cav absolutely does. However, being from the east coast, being the associate head (and not head) for the best team of the decade, and because you westerners are not familiar with him, he gets absolutely no respect from this board. Kind of funny actually.

Hopefully the OSU hiring committee is a tad more insightful.

Smith has just had his first over 500 season (17-15) in five years as head coach in the Atlantic League. Congratulations...sign him up because he played at OSU. Jones at least won as an assistant.

I just don't get the non-rational, sentimental desire to grab any coach out there and put them behind the bench because they played at OSU.

And how have those hires worked out? WMU (8-20-8) and BG (5-25-6)
Given those records, that's an indictment of those doing the hiring, not Jones.

Was Casey even a candidate for those jobs? If Casey is as smart as I think he is, he knew Markell would not be back and used the alma mater thing as an excuse to leave a sinking ship, but he was just waiting to get back to OSU as the head coach. He has no ties to WMU or BG, so why leave a top tier program that he graduated from to go to a rebuilding process at WMU or BG even if it is a head coach? Wait a bit and have a real good shot at OSU that doesn't really need to be rebuilt, just straightened out a bit.

As an Atlantic Hockey League fan, I have always been impressed with Smith and his teams at Canisius. He took over a team that was in shambles after some incidents with the previous coaching staff and players. His teams have improved every year, making it to the conference semi-finals this year before losing to RIT, they skate very hard, play physical, and perhaps most important, he is developing his players to where many are continuing their careers after Canisius.

He may not be a high profile candidate when compared to some of the other names listed but I certainly see him as a solid choice. Every big time coach had to cut his teeth somewhere as a head coach first. There is a big difference between being an assistant coach (read: one who makes suggestions) and a head coach (read: one who makes decisions) so I would think that a current head coach with a reputation for improvement and player development should be taken seriously.

Either way, good luck. I think it would be great for the conference and college hockey to see TOSU move up the CCHA standings.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

One reason to not hire an Eastern candidate is the fact that their recruiting networks may not be congruent to the areas from which OSU traditionally is strong in that department.

The problem with reading between the lines is sometimes you come up with a solution you like and then run with. It may or may not be the truth, but that doesn't matter if you like your solution. At the time there were rumors that Schafer was looking to land a position with an NHL team and Jones would be on board to take over. Really, who here really knows.

Why was Paluch not ready? BG hasn't had a winning season since '96-'97 at 17-16-5. That says more about the BG program than it does Paluch individually.

The year before he was fired, BG went a respectable 18-21. Not sure what happened after that...

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Osiecki is an excellent hire. Character guy with both depth and breadth of experience. Exciting times for tOSU hockey! :D
