Ohio State Next Coach?

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

All the applicants they must've had and they hire an Assistant from Wisconsin? Really. Are you kidding me? Cheese Head move to say the least. Whatever.

No kidding - how can he expect to hold a candle to Pooley - I mean Paul PLAYED at OSU...your sour grapes will go well with Wisconsin cheese.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

If this is true, OSU really blew it. OSU can afford him. My only guess he wanted all of his assistants with big multi-year contracts, OSU refused. Or he wanted 4 football tickets included, OSU refused. Or he wanted 100% backing from the athletic Dept. and was told. "we gave Markell 50% backing...at best. but we'll give you 70%."

So you have access to the hockey departments budget figures? How do you come up with the extra money that he would want, plus extra money for his assistants and from where in the budget do you take that money. If you shift it from somewhere else in the athletic department, whose budget do you take it from? Maybe you would suggest to Tressel and Matta that they're coughing up $100 grand each to benefit hockey...

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Our loss is your gain, you ********! :D .

Seriously, you'll love the guy. He's a straight shooter who might offend some without his butt-kissing. I've always been a big fan of HIS and will continue to be. Helluva recruiter, too.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Just curious about the timing of the announcement. Why was it made during a very busy weekend in sports both nationally and locally? If they announced it at the OSU spring game, I could understand that, does anyone know if that happened? Also, a lot of people were busy watching the NFL draft.

If they did not announce it at the Spring Game, that bothers me in that they don't seem to be promoting hockey any better now when they have some great news as compared to promoting hockey in the past.

Fianlly, can someone who knows give us all the proper pronunication of Oz's last name!:D

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Timing was probably to get ahead of the Florida meetings and after the championships. Makes more sense now that we know that Oz was in Detroit until the last and couldn't interview with attention on the game and current team.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

For next season they have lost Piccard, Bishop and Dalpe. All 3 loses hurt, anyone else?
Markell. That one doesn't hurt.:D

On a more serious note, there's likely to be some changes in personnel.

Will also be interesting to see if either of the committed recruits are released from their LOI or if any of the verbal only recruits go elsewhere.

I'm not sure if the Piccard loss hurts or not. Yes he was a senior and an AC, but I never was that sold on him. His first couple years he really took a lot of stupid penalties, but not as many his senior year. I guess to me, he seemed to take shifts off every game. Maybe he was getting tired of losing too much, but if you are out there you need to make the effort.

I thought that the quote from Nate Guenin at the end of the article was pretty good and gives me hope for the next few years!!

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Everything loses money except football and men's BB.

Hockey was on and off break even. When tickets went well a few years ago they were in the black even. The entire AD is set up to break even and they pride themselves on being able to support 36 sports - more than any other AD in the country.

But hockey in general (and with Ohio State's facilities) has the potential to be a strong revenue sport, as it is at Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, NoDak, etc.

That alone sets it apart from all other college sports. Football and BB run in the black, most others run in the red, but at some schools baseball and hockey can be revenue sports.

Just curious - were you being provocative to sitmulate debate (or lure out the trolls for sport) or do you honestly think Oz is a bad choice? I happen to disagree with you, and of the finalists we know about Osiecki is IMHO the best choice. tOSU may struggle with generating offense next year, but if we can improve the defense we will be in many more games than we were this year. Oz is clear choice in that regard.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

610 usually talks Blue Jacket hockey on Sundays between 11:00 and noon, I wonder if they will touch on Osiecki.

They did interview Osiecki this morning, he wants to use an offense similar to Michigan's. Speed and more aggressive. K Reed and Albert only 2 speeders I can think of, Bart not too bad. I think an incoming freshman is a speedster, don't know Dries game.

I was hoping that they would've interviewed Pooley or Smith to stimulate alumni support or at least hired a heavy hitter. I had heard that they had about 60 applicants and am surprised at the final three they came up with. Also, I'm not sure where I heard it, but I was under the impression that Hockey was right behind Football, Men's Basketball and Women's Basketball in regard to revenue at Ohio State...since they didn't choose an alumni to rally the alumni I thought they might lure away a successful head coach from another university to hopefully bring a winning season and put some people in the seats. Osiecki is pronounced like Dos "Equis" for the guy who didn't know how to pronounce his name. There's a lot that goes into the equation to run a successful program...I'm skeptical but time will tell.
