Ohio State Coach???

Re: Ohio State Coach???

I was curious about that myself because I had not heard anything about Jenny Potter having any baggage, but as you said, those who made those statements did not respond to your inquiries. All of the candidates mentioned in this thread are solid candidates. I would be happy to get any of them. I had not thought of a couple of them, so thanks to those who mentioned the additional candidates. Hopefully this gets wrapped up soon.

Yeah, it seems they are avoiding anything but hinting and I find that odd. I hope they get a coach on par with the talent they have coming in & one that treats the team and the game right. Just leave Joel Johnson the heck alone!! :)

Re: Ohio State Coach???

Yeah Dan Koch would be a great coach at either Mankato or Ohio St. but, he isn't leaving Madison! He left SSM to go back to UW four years ago.. and I'll bet he knows he will be the the next Badger head coach when Coach Johnson steps down or moves to another position.

How'd that plan work out for Mel Pearson?

No question about it, I would be thrilled with either of the associate head coaches from Minnesota or Wisconsin (Joel Johnson or Dan Koch), but as I told the wife on the way home, I would be concerned that they would leave to go back to those schools when the current head coaches retire or leave for other positions. I would prefer to bring in someone who is going to stay and build the program up. I certainly appreciate your statement of well wishes regarding getting a coach who is on par with the talent and treats the team & game the right way. That is obviously important to us fans, and it better be important to the persons responsible for making the decision on who we hire! I am cautiously optimistic that our athletic department will hit one out of the park with this hire, but the other side of me is thinking about the track record of our athletic department just flat out not giving a rip about the hockey programs and finding a way to blow a great opportunity to bring in a big time coach that will get us to the next level. Time will tell. As others have alluded to, I expect this to be finished at some point next week. The thing that really makes me think some of those candidates are a pipe dream for us OSU fans is the way the athletic department here treats hockey as an afterthought. It's been that way for a while, and I am sure potential candidates are well aware of how things are done here. That is what concerns me the most about our ability to bring in a difference-making coach. Our athletic department really needs a culture change when it comes to how they view and treat hockey (men's and women's). Some of our fans might debate this with me (one already dismissed my notion that the OSU Ice Rink is hurting recruiting despite being the worst facility in the WCHA), but actions speak louder than words. Maybe our athletic department will surprise me. I am really enjoying this discussion. Keep the posts and the speculation coming, friends! :)

Frost and Joel Johnson are contemporaries, so I don't think you'd have to worry that Johnson would be waiting for Frost to get old. As for Frost leaving, I'm not sure where he'd go? Once a coach starts in the women's game, it isn't like he seems to be on the radar of men's teams. I'm sure Frost didn't grow up dreaming of being the women's hockey coach at Minnesota, but he may be hard pressed to think of a better job at this point for which he'd be a candidate. He's young enough that he could become an assistant for a men's team and then get a higher-profile head coaching job, but IMO, that's what it would take.

Here is a link to a story that links to the full report on OSU coach
http://deadspin.com/read-the-full-re...the-1691976548

Some of the "lowlights":
One witness said Handrahan told her that he likes "to see the girls cry because it makes him feel powerful."

When one witness said she felt bad about sleeping a lot due to an injury even though her boyfriend was in town, Handrahan replied, "Why don't you just give him a Victoria's Secret magazine, some lotion, and tell him to take care of it himself."

When a player had leftover makeup underneath her eyes, Handrahan said," I thought the walk of shame was on Sunday mornings not Tuesday mornings."

Multiple witnesses said Handrahan talked about his divorce and ex-wife in ways that made them uncomfortable. One said Handrahan called his former wife "his ***** ex-wife," another said the coach told her, "My life is a mess. If I don't have you girls, what else do I have?"

Telling people to "get horny" wasn't just for his players. One witness said he told a female referee during a game to "get horny for the whistle."

The anonymous reporter was "identified as a faculty member or instructor." The players said they feared retaliation due to how Handrahan had reacted to a complaint in the past.

Re: Ohio State Coach???

It does seem like OSU ignores hockey but look at the talent they have been getting! AS much as I hated the way they played this year (and their sisters who seemed to take lessons from a different pair of thug sisters) they have talent and the guy who seems to have a broken brain pan has a better recruiting class coming in next year. This would be a great opportunity for a coach with high hopes.

As much as I love the Gophers I love hockey more & I hope OSU and UMD both get coaches worthy of the players on the ice. There is a lot of good talent next year in Columbus, it would be a shame if the admins attitude left them with an inferior coach (still, leave Joel outta this :) )

In the comment section is a comment from an OSU student who has a class with a couple players that's interesting.

Some of this behavior is problematic, but this one? :confused: I always hear players saying how close the teams are. They do spend six months together. So if the coach is saying the team is the most important thing in his life at present, it gets listed under fireable offenses? Sorry, I can't agree with that one.

Along the lines you mention, I'm just feeling ishy about this whole thing. Like his behavior is extremely inappropriate, and bad coaching for a women's college hockey team. Really tone-deaf, and totally cool that he should be gone. But I'm not feeling great that this stuff is receiving this type of public airing, and as the players were quoted as saying, it's starting to feel unfortunate it's messing with his life in this way.

I went into the link and read the comment. When you have a situation like this, there are always two sides to the story, and as they say, the truth lies somewhere in between. I think Coach probably crossed the line and did some things he shouldn't have done, but I don't think he is the monster he has been made out to be. I totally agree with Ne7minder, the athletic department needs to bring in a difference-making coach that will get this program to the next level. The girls work very hard and deserve to have the best coach possible. The problem here is that Hockey is treated as an afterthought, so I fear that may prevent some really top-notch coaches from applying.

I don't agree with that statement being a fireable offense, either. I wouldn't know firsthand, thankfully, but going through a divorce can't be easy.

Re: Ohio State Coach???

Let me throw a name out there: Manon Rheaume. Has all the requirements. Coached a number of the incoming commits. Her brother played in the NHL and has been coaching with her. She has a good gig going so would be tough to pull her in but she would add some instant credibility to the program.

Crutch, I am intrigued by this possibility. What is she doing these days? I did a little research online and I see she has a foundation and holds a big hockey tournament in suburban Detroit somewhere, but other than that, I didn't really find much. Do you think she would be interested in becoming a college coach and relocating to Columbus? She obviously has the skillsets to be a great coach, but as you alluded to, might be tough to pull her away. Whoever it ends up being, it won't be long before we find out. I expect this to be wrapped up at some point next week.

When it comes to Joel, I have no control over that, Ne7minder! Maybe I can email Gene Smith and tell him he is not allowed to hire Joel Johnson! ;)

Three things:

1) What is acceptable for a player to say isn't necessarily acceptable for a coach to say;
2) How this particular comment gets taken would depend a lot on the specific context and the manner in which it was said and that doesn't come through in a written report;
3) I don't think any one comment or action here, except maybe the behavior in North Dakota, constitutes a fireable offense. It's the pattern that turns a string of such comments into a fireable offense.

Re: Ohio State Coach???

I think the reality is that the Penn State (Sandusky) incident has changed the way AD's handle these situations in the future (even if nowhere near the severity).

For the record, Handrahan officially resigned. He was not fired.

For sexual harassment, it doesn't matter what was said or what was intended. The only thing that matters is how it was perceived by the other person, especially in a situation where you are in a leadership postion in relation to the other person. I've seen people fired for more innocuous statements, but that made the other person uncomfortable.
