Ohio State Coach???

Re: Ohio State Coach???

Always pick the school for the school. Coaches come and go, more so now than ever.

Two comments, one on each side of that debate/equation:
1 - Yes pick the school for the School - Academics should come first as part of that choice.
2 - But on the hockey front, choose the program for what the coach brings. Many players are attracted to a program due to the coach. The coach that is the right fit for the player tends to make the whole varsity experience so much better (on average). Both my D's chose their school partly cause of the coach. Once their choices were whittled down to the last three it was the coach choice that was one of the keys in the decision making. In both of our D's cases the coach did not last the four years (3 years in one case, only one season in the other case). Neither liked their new coach as much, and both ended up with less playing time under their new coaches. The good news is that academically both picked the right school for their objectives, and the academics worked out great for both. They both still look fondly back to their undergrad experience. There is a message in there somewhere. !!!

Re: Ohio State Coach???

we all get that the coach will play a factor in choosing a school

but every time a coach gets canned at least one ninkumpoop will post that all the players are gonna leave
didn't happen in Duluth, didn't happen here

You are more likely see the odd player quit, rather than move after a coaching change. I can only think of one example of a key player on a team moving after there was a coaching change. This example, from about 3 years ago or so was a top end player who is in the TC program.

Re: Ohio State Coach???

Maybe after getting rid of one polarizing figure, UMD decided they didn't want to sign themselves up for more of the same.

But since this is more of a multiple choice question, I'll go with 6.

7. Who cares?

Potter is now the head coach at one of the premiere and legendary public educational and collegiate athletic institutions in the World. Just the 3rd coach in the history of the program, she brings her championship pedigree, attitude and work ethic to the ice in Columbus. Like at Trinity, once her players buy into winning as a team, the commitment it takes on and off the ice to do so, respecting each other and striving for a common goal, and realize how much fun that process really is, Women's hockey at OSU will join the legacy of excellence that is the tradition of OSU athletics. Most importantly, she will recruit good people and good players and she will coach them up. Her players are going to have a great overall experience and emerge as ambassadors for OSU as students and hockey players alike. Here come the Buckeyes....they will soon be contending with the Gophers and Badgers for the NCAA title...my guess is by 2017 ....18 at the latest :D

Haha. Buckle up for a tough few years if that's what you expect. Yikes.

Charlie probably couldn't teach someone how to tape a knob on a stick.

Not sure what that has to do with the laughable pipe dream of Ohio State women's hockey becoming the next storied Buckeye squad and competing with the best teams in the country.

The current Ohio State product reminds me of the District V team from back in the day. Except in this case, I don't think a set of fresh new sweaters and a new coach will be enough to turn the club into a winner. Good luck though.

This all may be true but there is great potential here, it could be awakening a sleeping giant. The athletic dollars in total they have are hard to match. Depends how much they get.

I'm not saying everything in Trinity's post is going to come true (hope it does, but there are never any guarantees), but we're already competitive with the best teams in the country, so that part of it is clearly not a "pipe dream". We defeated Frozen Four participant Wisconsin this season and were more competitive with Minnesota than Harvard was in the National Title Game. We swept Bemidji this season, who spent some time in the Top Ten.

Trinity went and said OSU will be competing with the Badgers and Gophers for national titles. That's a bit different than stealing one of four annual regular season matchups against a highly ranked team.

It's Ohio. No matter what magic Mrs. Potter and Mr. Trinity have up their sleeves, the OSU will never be a destination school for elite hockey talent.

Jincy Dunne might disagree.

Again depends on dollars and coaches. Connecticut was not a destination school for W bball, Oregon Ducks not for football etc etc plenty of examples to prove you wrong.

Re: Ohio State Coach???

Ohio State had a competitive team last year and has a good recruiting class coming in. A new coach with an intriguing name. And a powerful athletic department going with an attractive school school and campus. No reason they should't be optimistic.

Trinity just has a tendency to tarnish posts that contain elements of value by being so wildly over the top. To me, Trinity sounds more like Jenny's dad than Jenny's husband :D

If Ms. Potter hires Harry Potter as one of her assistant coaches we could really see some magic next season!

Hoops and football are totally different animals. Hockey is a very regional sport, and Ohio is far from what you'd call a hockey hotbed. Selling players from hockey markets on a football/basketball school isn't going to be easy, even if Mrs. Potter is as good as advertised by Trinity11.

I'll admit money helps, and I know the OSU has plenty of it. Still, it's women's college hockey -- in Ohio. I think planning championship parade routes at this stage of the game is putting the cart before the horse to say the least.

I was looking at a map and I know I'm not the first to say something like this but it sure looks like it would make a lot of sense for OSU and Lindenwood to trade conferences with each other for travel reasons alone. OSU is a lot closer to all the other CHA opponents and Lindenwood is also closer to all the other WCHA opponents to the point where they could each easily drive to several places that they currently have to fly to. I wonder how many times a season they cross paths with each other in the air. If there was a straight exchange of teams both conferences would still have the same number of teams and conference games.

Re: Ohio State Coach???

Some numbers that my show how "close" Ohio State is to being really competitive with someone like Minnestoa:

Ohio State's whole team scored 82 goals. Minnesota returns their first line next year that scored 80 goals.

Minnesota's top freshman forward scored 14 goals which would have led the Buckeyes. Minnesota's second leading scoring freshmen (11) would have been second for OSU.

FWIW, As good a freshmen class as OSU has coming in next year, I would bet that Minnesota's class will outscore OSU's by a fairly wide margin.

Re: Ohio State Coach???

When it comes to recruiting, OSU's location (Ohio) is a bit of a disadvantage, but is definitely not insurmountable. Consider Nebraska-Omaha's men's team, which made it to this year's Frozen Four, but did not have one rostered player from their home State of Nebraska. No disrespect to them, but I suspect that for most recruits Ohio State would have a lot more allure than Omaha.
