Ohio State Buckeyes 2023-24 The Muzzinator Gonna Muzzinate!!

"The top-ranked Ohio State women’s ice hockey team gets the second half of their season underway this weekend at No. 2 Minnesota. The Buckeyes are undefeated in conference play and off to their best start in program history at 16-2-0."

Who's gonna call St Cloud and break the bad news to them?

I don’t know but they need to tell UMD also:

“In her four seasons at Minnesota, Muzerall earned two national championships in 2000 and 2001 “

oh that’s actually in her bio on the Buckeye website. Did she win 2 nattys as a player?

I read her OSU bio as saying "A two-time All-American [comma] and national champion as a player at Minnesota..."

2X All-American, 1X National Champ. That would be accurate, as best I can tell.

In a battle between #1 and #2 earlier tonight, it was all Ohio State as the Buckeyes scored four first-period goals and never looked back in a dominating 7-0 win at Ridder Arena. Ohio State got goals from Joy Dunne (2), Kenzie Hauswirth, and Hannah Bilka to take a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. In the second period, Ohio State got a goal from Joy Dunne to give her a hat trick, her second hat trick of the season, which put the Bucks up 5-0. Later in the period, Hannah Bilka would get her second goal of the game to put Ohio State up 6-0 going into the final intermission. Olivia Mobley scored early in the third period to put the Buckeyes up 7-0 and that is how this one ended. Ohio State outshot Minnesota 33-20 in this one. Buckeye backstop Raygan Kirk stopped all 20 shots she faced to get the win. Gopher goaltenders Lucy Morgan and Skylar Vetter combined to stop 26 of the 33 shots they faced. I am going to take an educated guess that we will see a completely different Minnesota team tomorrow and the game will be much more competitive. Tomorrow's game will start at 3:00 pm EST.

Gives you the idea that they are still not really paying attention to OSU Women's Hockey around here. I mean, sheesh, it doesn't take that much effort to go into ohiostatebuckeyes.com, pull up the schedule, and see that yes, they lost a conference game vs. St. Cloud. LOL, the one program on our campus that actually DOES compete for National Titles and these writers don't take the time to proofread.

I think some people think there is B1G Ten for womens hockey . Unacceptable error, of course considering the source.

the same goes for the claim that Muzerall won a 2001 national championship which yes if you read her whole bio, it does say in multiple places. Yeesh.

Bet you didn't see today's coming either. Actually, if I am completely honest, I didn't either. I thought we could get a close win today, but certainly did not expect another win by that many goals at Ridder.

For this weekends series 13 Ohio State goals to Minnesota's 1. Somebody pinch me!

As Hockeybuckeye pointed out, the Buckeyes completed the sweep earlier today against Minnesota at Ridder Arena by a final score of 6-1. After a scoreless first period, the Buckeyes erupted for five goals in the second period to put it out of reach. Scoring the Ohio State goals in that period were Sloane Matthews, Hannah Bilka, Jenn Gardiner, Lauren Bernard, and Emma Peschel. Minnesota got a goal in the third period from Madison Kaiser to make it 5-1. Ohio State's Hadley Hartmetz lit the lamp late in the game to make the final score 6-1. Ohio State outshot the Gophers 39-18 in this one. Raygan Kirk got the start in net for the Buckeyes and stopped 17 of the 18 shots she faced in the win. Skylar Vetter and Lucy Morgan combined to stop 33 of the 39 shots they faced in the loss. Minnesota will travel to Bemidji State next weekend for a series with the Beavers. Ohio State will return home to face Minnesota-Duluth.

Yes.

The first three National Tournaments featuring the "last four standing" were sanctioned by the AWCHA. From Wikipedia:

American Women's College Hockey Alliance champions

Prior to the NCAA establishing a women's ice hockey championship, the AWCHA held a championship from 1997-98 season to 1999-2000 season. Below are those champions.

  • 1998 New Hampshire
  • 1999 Harvard
  • 2000 Minnesota
Nadine was a member the 2000 Minnesota team.

Remarkably her teammate Winny Brodt-Brown did win two National Titles; but the first was with New Hampshire in 1998. She then transferred to Minnesota and ultimately was part of the 2000 Gophers team.

As Lindsay alluded to, the 2001 National Title was claimed by UMD, not the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. The 2001 tournament was the first one directly sanctioned by the NCAA. The Gophers did win the 2001 Regular Season WCHA Championship.

I suppose that specific history creates some confusion. It could lead someone to conclude that Muzzerall never won a Natty as a player. But on the ice, the AWCHA/NCAA distinction seemed like a technicality. Personally I attended in 1999, and Harvard's title looked fully legitimate to me. FWIW, the Gophers finished 3rd that year.

To Summarize:
1998 No
1999 No
2000 Yes
2001 No
Total = 1

My reactions:

1. Astonished by the scores. Currently about half way through the Friday game on B1G+. Will finish viewing the series soon. Apparently this really did happen.

2. Incredibly proud of the players & coaches.

3. Keeping in mind that the most important games are played in March.

Lost Jaques and Maltais and somehow got better. I wasn't expecting this. Hopefully, the new President will do whatever is necessary to lock down The Muzzinator for good.

He can start by making sure the athletic department moves forward with the new arena that this program has earned and so richly deserves. As Toby Keith once sang, "a little less talk and a lot more action."

With Gene finally leaving and a new President who played D1 hockey picking his successor, I think this is the time for both programs to get new arenas. The money has always been there, but the will has never been there. I 100% believe that if The Muzzinator hadn't forced his hand, GS would have let them rot in the old ice rink for an eternity.
