Ohio State Buckeyes 2023-24 The Muzzinator Gonna Muzzinate!!

Just weighing in to say I also hope the Muzzinator is ok! Hope she takes the time she needs whatever it is.

Cline sure presents well in the post game interviews, no one likes a loss, but we’ll see how the buckeyes bounce back.

Turned on the game just now to see the St Cloud goal. Muzzeral is on the bench (chewing away on her gum).

1-1 at the end of the first period.

Coach Muzerall was indeed back on the bench today, thankfully, and the Buckeyes bounced back with a 6-2 win over the Huskies! Cayla Barnes opened the scoring for Ohio State to give the Bucks a 1-0 lead. St. Cloud's Laura Zimmermann lit the lamp later in the period and the teams went into the first intermission tied 1-1. The second period was all Buckeyes as they scored four times to put this one out of reach. Ohio State's goals were scored by Jenn Gardiner, Olivia Mobley (2), and Kiara Zanon. The Buckeyes took a 5-1 lead into the final intermission. Joy Dunne lit the lamp for Ohio State in the third period to give the home team a 6-1 lead. The Huskies' Taylor Lind got a late goal to make the final score 6-2. As was the case in Friday's game, Ohio State outshot the Huskies by a wide margin, 43-16. JoJo Chobak got the start in net for St. Cloud and stopped 37 of the 43 shots she faced. Amanda Thiele started for Ohio State and stopped 14 of the 16 shots she faced to get the win. Ohio State will host Minnesota State next weekend before breaking for the holidays. Those games are actually being played on Saturday and Sunday instead of Friday and Saturday. St. Cloud will host Minnesota on Tuesday night, then Minnesota-Duluth next weekend before they break for the holiday.

Final Score From Saturday, December 2nd
Ohio State 6
St. Cloud State 2

Buckeyes Start It Up; Earn Split

Most of our opponents come from a fair distance away. Sometimes that translates into a slow start for travel weary visitors. But not for the Huskies. Friday night the Huskies busted loose like Wild Horses. A bit startling.

The Buckeyes on Friday? We tried. And we tried. And we tried. But we just couldn't Get No Satisfaction. It was enough to Fry your imagination.

What would Saturday bring? Would Ohio State once again be Stoned by a St. Cloud Goalie? Don't make a grown man cry! Time to get Rolling. Time to Start It Up.

Better start on Saturday. Nevertheless, the first period ended in a 1-1 deadlock. But in the second period, the Buckeye offense revved it up. The mean, mean machine exploded for four straight goals. They added one more in the third. Here's to hoping they never stop, never stop.

Friday was tough. But it's all right now. In fact it's a gas.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: Laura Zimmerman, St. Cloud State
The Huskies had but one Even Strength Goal on the weekend. The play began with a breakout pass from Taylor Larson. Maddy Peterson smartly steered the puck ahead to Zimmerman. Everybody must get stoned? Not Laura. Her dazzling dash & slick shot tied the score 1-1.

#3 Star: Cayla Barnes, Ohio State
Now about that better start. The first OSU scoring play began with a purposeful dump-in around the end boards by Hadley Hartmetz. After a brief loss of possession, Cayla stole the puck, strode toward the net and launched a fine shot. A creative "scissors screen" by Jocelyn Amos shepherded the puck into the twine.

#2 Star: Jenn Gardiner, Ohio State
The second period explosion? Jenn started it up. A tough angle blast from the always dangerous Gardiner.

#1 Star: Olivia Mobley, Ohio State
So what would Mobley do? Oh, just score the GWG and add an important insurance tally. And make sure that the blast from Gardiner matured into a chain reaction.

Olivia's production doubled her season goal total. More importantly, she was Saturday's difference-maker. Great day for #15.

Ohio State took care of business earlier today, beating Minnesota State by a final score of 6-1. The Buckeyes got three first-period goals from Jenn Gardiner, Jenna Buglioni, and Cayla Barnes to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Lauren Bernard and Hadley Hartmetz lit the lamp for Ohio State in the second period and they took a 5-0 lead into the final intermission. Stephanie Markowski scored in the third period to give the Bucks a 6-0 lead. Minnesota State got a late goal from Kianna Roeske to avoid the shutout. Ohio State outshot the Mavericks in this one, 46-30. Buckeye backstop Raygan Kirk stopped 29 of the 30 shots she faced to get the win. Maverick netminder Lauren Barbro stopped 40 of the 46 shots she faced. The teams will wrap up their series tomorrow at 2:00 pm EST.

Rare missed game for me Saturday night. The astronomer will be back on the telescope tomorrow afternoon for star gazing.

Ohio State wrapped up their final series of 2023 with a 4-1 win over Minnesota State earlier today. Olivia Mobley opened the scoring for Ohio State in the first period to put the Buckeyes up 1-0. The Mavericks answered less than two minutes later on a goal from Sydney Langseth to knot things up at 1-1. Later in the first period, Ohio State's Kiara Zanon lit the lamp to send the Bucks into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. Neither team could find the back of the net in the middle frame, so the two teams went into the final intermission with the same 2-1 score. Joy Dunne scored for Ohio State to give the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead, then Kelsey King would get an empty-netter to make the final score 4-1. Ohio State outshot Minnesota State 39-14 in this one. Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopped 13 of the 14 shots she faced to get the win. Maverick backstop Suzette Faucher stopped 35 of the 38 shots she faced. Both teams are off until January. Enjoy the holidays, everyone!

The Mavericks played a stronger game today and it was closer than the score showed with the Buckeyes only able to extend their one goal lead late in the game. Curiously the Mavericks coach didn't pull their goalie down 3-1 with two minutes left and controlling the puck in the Buckeyes end. When she was pulled it was closer to a minute left and resulted in an Ohio State empty net goal. It would have been 5-1 but the last goal was waived off. I found out after the game it was for goaltender interference but there was no explanation of why no penalty was called for it. Ohio State just looked off for some reason and a stronger opponent could have taken advantage.
Still, we swept and now have a four point conference lead with help from the Badgers & Gophers beating up on each other!

Good question. Note upfront that the NHL & other leagues may have differing standards -- thus causing confusion. But here's NCAA Rule 73.2:

If, in the opinion of the official, an attacking player physically initiates contact that physically prevents the goalkeeper from defending the goal, the attacking player may receive a penalty. This penalty may be enforced whether the goalkeeper is inside or outside the goal crease and whether a goal is scored. The referee should give significant consideration to the degree and nature of the contact with the goalkeeper rather than to the exact location of the goalkeeper at the time of the contact.

If an attacking player establishes position in the goal crease, and is physically or visually screening the goalkeeper impairing the ability to defend the goal, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed. Referees are encouraged to communicate with attacking players to exit the crease; if players do not comply, the referee may stop play and conduct a faceoff in the neutral zone.

(underlining & blue text color added)

Summary:

Goaltender Interference With Physical Contact
Goal Disallowed
Two Minute Minor Penalty
Face-Off in the Defensive Zone of the Penalized Team (See Rule 81.2)

Visual Screening While Standing In The Crease; No Physical Contact
Goal Disallowed
No Minor Penalty; No Change in Manpower on the Ice
Face-Off in the Neutral Zone

Note that in Sunday's game, the face-off was in the neutral zone after the disallowed goal. Had the physical contact minor penalty been called, the face-off would have been located in the Buckeyes' defensive zone.

Hope this helps. And yeah, I had to look this one up.

Buckeyes Overcome Mavericks & Finals Week To Complete Sweep
There wasn't as much energy as usual at the Ice Rink. The start time was a touch early. Attendance was a little down; maybe due to playing on Sunday. No Band. And perhaps most of all, the distraction of Final Exams.

Every Finals Week brings something a little different. Sometimes everything is on the line. Other times, if your classes are heavy on projects and term papers, Finals can be a little anti-climatic.

So too on the ice. No disrespect whatsoever to the Mavericks, who put up a good fight. But after a truly dynamic Fall Semester schedule for OSU -- with spectacular results -- letting down just a touch was probably inevitable. A little anti-climatic? I'd say yes. But be that as it may, Ohio State played plenty well enough to secure the win. And there was that little burst of energy at game's end.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: Joy Dunne, Ohio State
Joy closed out the game. Her late Power Play Insurance Goal basically settled the matter. For good measure, Dunne added the Primary Assist on the Empty-Netter. Her unselfish, crisp pass into the slot gave Kelsey King a tap-in tally.

#3 Star: (tie) Sydney Langseth, Minnesota State; and Whitney Tuttle, Minnesota State
The Mankato goal stemmed from an aggressive forecheck by Whitney. Intercepting a pass behind the Buckeye net, she quickly fired a pass into the slot. The puck found the tape on Sydney's stick, and Langseth slammed it home.

It's also important to recognize Taylor Otremba; Sydney & Whitney's Linemate. Although Taylor didn't earn a scoring point, she was one of the best Mavericks all game long. Despite being on the losing end of the final score, Otremba finished at +1 for the game.

#2 Star: Jordan Baxter, Ohio State
Fourth Line Center Baxter excelled in the Face-Off Circle. Assuming the official stats are accurate, Jordan won nine draws, and didn't lose a single one. We'll let Baxter's stellar effort be a symbol of the larger story: The Buckeyes won this one with superior depth.

#1 Star: Kiara Zanon, Ohio State & A Strong Supporting Cast
Kiara scored the GWG. But it's also fair to say that it took a village to make the play. In an intense multiplayer battle in front of the Mankato Bench, Makenna Webster, Lauren Bernard & Sloane Matthews all played the puck. It was Sloane who gloved the puck down, gaining control. From there, Matthews handed the baton to Cayla Barnes; then headed to the bench. Sloane was comfortably seated before the goal was scored; but her contribution stood as the 2nd Assist.

The play proceeded with a nice dangle by Barnes. Exit Barnes, Enter Zanon. Sniper that she is, it's no surprise that Kiara's blast found the net.

But there's one more chapter to the story. As the puck zipped toward the Maverick goal cage, Jenna Buglioni performed a skillful scissors screen. Thus making the Kato Keeper's job virtually impossible.

It would have been fitting had Jenna earned the 1st Assist. But alas, Buglioni was the only Buckeye skater on the ice who never touched the puck. So supportive kudos will have to suffice.

That's the second successful scissors screen in as many weekends. Me thinks the Buckeyes practice this play.

Anyone know what specifically is the issue for the muzzinator?

I heard she was called upon to try to help figure out the woes of the men's hockey team and that because they are so bad it took her that long to type up her analysis and her list of recommendations which included having her take over as their head coach while.she continues to be the head coach of the women's hockey team since she's just that good. ;)

If anyone could it would be the muzzinator...

I guess our definitions of great are different. I was hoping for insight, all it was was a summary of her history with a few quotes.

You can feel what you want but any coach who can take a program that's in the basement never achieving anything to the level it's at now in the timeframe it took her is pretty damn impressive.

I'm not saying what she has done is not impressive, it's the probably the most impressive thing we have ever seen in women's college hockey. I'm saying the article itself is not a great article.
