Ohio State Buckeyes 2023-24 The Muzzinator Gonna Muzzinate!!

With Gene finally leaving and a new President who played D1 hockey picking his successor, I think this is the time for both programs to get new arenas. The money has always been there, but the will has never been there. I 100% believe that if The Muzzinator hadn't forced his hand, GS would have let them rot in the old ice rink for an eternity.

I think the President of the University would have little involvement in arenas for fringe sports. There is a lot more to their job than sports. They hire AD's for that stuff and your new AD probably has never set foot in a hockey rink in his life. That is your biggest problem. WI has an assistant AD that runs the hockey programs for the AD and hockey is bigger at WI than Tosu.

I was talking today with one of our men's team alum who coached hockey back in the day at Macalester College in St.Paul and he pretty much said the exact same thing.

It doesn't mean that he's going to take over the details and implementation of any arena plans from the AD and dive into the minutia. He's not a smirking jock-sniffer like the guy Michigan hired. But it can very well be a case where he has talks with the AD and says that the men need a new arena also and task that subordinate with implementing it. Given some of the senior military postings he held after moving on from flight status, I'd guess that he's quite capable of recognizing a need and delegating responsibility for addressing that need to the relevant subordinate.

I know, right?
With that track record this is a very questionable hire. This brings a new concern to my mind, everyone here has been ga ga over our new president because he's a hockey guy and Top Gun pilot but now I'm apprehensive about his judgement because of his enthusiastic endorsement of this hire. I just hope time will show I had nothing to worry about.

All I can say is I hope Ross Bjork learned from his mistakes. Those types of mistakes will not be tolerated here. Totally agree with you that this was a questionable hire. At the same time, I hope he proves me wrong.

I totally agree with you regarding the money part. I will not listen to any bullshit about us "not having the money" for a new ice rink for the women. Ohio State is one of the richest athletic departments in the country. I agree with you that they should build hockey-only facilities for both the men and women, but for now, I don't think the plan is for the men to get their own building. From what I hear, the men are going to stay in the Schott. I know it sucks for them because there are so many other events in the Schott that they don't even get to practice there most of the time. Regarding the women, the OSU Ice Rink is the worst facility in the country. That needs to change. This program should have had a new building years ago. Nadine should just be handed the Coach of the Year Trophy every season just for what she is accomplishing in the worst facility in the country.

When I last spoke with former OSU President Johnson she told me she had secured the funding for the new women's arena before she left. My often muddled COVID scared brain didn't ask how much was put aside for the project. If we know how much they can spend we might have an idea of the size and scope of the building.
Comparatively speaking Penn States Pegula arena is a dual ice sheet arena that seats approximately 6000 and was built at a cost of 88 million ten years ago. So how much do you think would be needed to build what we want and given 10 years of inflation what would 88 million get you now?

Put a bug in whoever's ear that when a new arena is built, be sure to also include a dedicated parking lot or multi-level parking deck for arena use only. The first time I went to a game at Pegula and they turned me away at the parking lot because they needed the lot for a basketball game (or something like that), I couldn't believe it. Hockey fans can't use the parking lot...at the hockey arena...for a hockey game? Ohio State arena planners can look at Amsoil arena in Duluth for inspiration.

I'm sure this was shared before, it says board of trustees approved a plan in Feb. if the project gets cancelled again….surely at some point it will impact recruiting.

It sure has not affected recruiting so far! Northeastern also has a subpar rink and it does not seem to be phasing girls on going there to play hockey either. Meanwhile, girls have left PSU and Quinnipiac which have two of the nicest rinks around to go play for the Muzzinator.

Appreciate the advice. There's already several acres of parking lot across the street from where the arena is supposed to go. I do hope they put an additional handicap lot against the building like we have at the men's arena.
If you've been to Michigan State's Munn arena there's no general parking close by. Their lot across the street is reserved for those who bought season parking passes.

Excellent point, and thankfully, with the area of campus where they are building the ice arena (up north next to Covelli Center), as Hockeybuckeye said, there is already ample parking up there. There is also enough space up there to have more parking next to the building (handicap lot or more).

The Buckeyes took game one of their series earlier tonight against Minnesota-Duluth by a final score of 3-0. Ohio State carried the play for a good portion of this game but credit UMD's outstanding goaltender, Hailey MacLeod, for keeping them in the game. Ohio State opened the scoring with less than 10 seconds remaining in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Joy Dunne lit the lamp for the Buckeyes in the second period to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead heading into the final intermission. Kenzie Hauswirth tacked on another goal for the Bucks in the third period and the final score was 3-0. The Bucks outshot the Bulldogs 38-14 with Buckeye backstop Raygan Kirk stopping all 14 shots she faced in the win. UMD netminder Hailey MacLeod stopped 35 of the 38 shots she faced. The two teams are back at it tomorrow at 2:00 pm EST. Buckeye fans are encouraged to wear black tomorrow to match the team.

Final Score From Friday, January 19th
Ohio State 3
Minnesota-Duluth 0
Are Bulldogs Stubborn?

According to brookhurstanimal.com: They're Stubborn.

Like bulls, bulldogs are extremely strong-willed. Once they've decided on something, they won't change their minds. It can be difficult, almost impossible, to force a bulldog to do something it doesn't want to.

Are UMD Bulldogs Stubborn? They're Stubborn.

Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink, UMD put up a staunch defense, particularly in the defensive slot. I wouldn't say the 'dogs packed it in, but it was certainly a pack effort.

Last October, Duluth gave up two Power Play Goals in each of the OSU/UMD games. They decided that wasn't going to happen again. It didn't.

So if the Buckeyes were to win, they had to find a way to score at even strength. It wasn't easy. But with talent, depth and perseverance, OSU broke through once in each period. Note that it took 19:50 to attain the 1st Period breakthrough. The game was even up to that point.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Minnesota-Duluth Honorable Mention: Nina Jobst-Smith
On the UMD Line Chart, Nina is listed on the second d-pair. But to my eye, #28 was the Most Stubborn Bulldog of them all. To be clear, that's intended to be high praise.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Hadley Hartmetz & Lauren Bernard
Hadley & Lauren served as OSU's first d-pair. They more than lived up to the billing. Both were +3 for the game; they were the only 2 players to accomplish that. Even more importantly, they played a central role in the Buckeye Shutout. And while we're at it, don't forget that Hartmetz launched the 2nd Buckeye Goal, earning the Secondary Assist.

#3 Star: Raygan Kirk, Ohio State
Deja vu all over again. Raygun faces a modest number of opponents' shots. Calm, cool & collected, she turns away every one of them. Another Shutout for Kirk, and another Star.

#2 Star: (tie) Sloane Matthews, Ohio State; and Kenzie Hauswirth, Ohio State
Now about that depth. The Buckeye 3rd Line started the game, and they proved to be the difference makers. Most likely their initial assignment was to put the clamps on the top UMD line of McMahon/Hunt/Burgen. But the contributions went well beyond that. Sloane had a 70% win rate in the face-off circle. One of those face-off wins led directly to the 3rd Buckeye Goal -- Scored by linemate Kenzie. Matthews also played a key role on the 1st Goal. Keep reading...

#1 Star: Kelsey King, Ohio State
Kelsey was Buckeye Royalty tonight. Her breakthrough goal turned the game in OSU's favor. It also proved to be the GWG.

The play began in the offensive zone, with a scrum along the right wing boards. Sloane Matthews emerged with the puck, and sent Kiara Zanon on her way to the UMD net. Two stiff shots from Zanon; Two strong saves by Hailey MacLeod. Next the puck went to King, whose magnificent backhand constituted an irresistible force.

We also need to mention that on the 3rd Buckeye Goal, Kelsey partially won a slot battle, causing the puck to wind up on Hauswirth's stick. You know the rest: Goal Hauswirth; Primary Assist King.

Up Next: Rematch with the Bulldogs. On Saturday we start an hour earlier than usual; Face-Off is at 2:01 PM EST.

Congratulations to Coach Muzerall, staff, and all the former and current Buckeyes for achieving the most wins in program history. I have a feeling this is just the beginning. GO BUCKS!!!

Pgb, talk about those stubborn Bulldogs! Minnesota-Duluth was especially stubborn today (translation, they played a great game today), so much so that it took the Buckeyes almost the entire 60 minutes to score a goal on them (55:42 to be exact). After two scoreless periods and nearly a scoreless third period, Ohio State's Hannah Bilka lit the lamp with 4:18 to go in the game and the Buckeyes were able to make that stand in a very hard-fought 1-0 win over Minnesota-Duluth. Ohio State outshot UMD 33-18 in this one with Buckeye backstop Amanda Thiele getting the 18-save shutout win. UMD netminder Eve Gascon stood tall in net in this one, stopping 32 of the 33 shots she faced in the loss. Ohio State will go on the road next weekend to face the only team that has beaten them in league play this season, the St. Cloud Huskies. Minnesota-Duluth will return home to face Wisconsin.

As a footnote to that this is the first time in program history that we've taken all four regular season games from Duluth.
