Buckeyes Win Cliffhanger
Just who were those Women we were playing? Elite Hockey Players? Or La Quebrada Cliff Divers? Obviously the answer is the former. But the 'dogs gave us some of the drama and intensity normally reserved for those tall cliffs.
Now it's a long way from Duluth to Acapulco. But the Bulldogs sure looked comfortable on that cliff. The Buckeyes? Not so much. We hadn't been anticipating any extraordinary climbs or dives on Saturday. In the end, the Buckeyes eked out the win. But credit Head Coach Maura Crowell for a fine game plan, and the Bulldog players for almost pulling off the upset. They were a bounce or two away from doing just that.
Yes, it was a defense first approach. If the Bulldogs were stubborn Friday, they were even stingier Saturday.
But it was more than defense. UMD aggressively challenged OSU over the full 200 feet. It did result in some turnovers. Also Duluth regularly attempted stretch passes designed to create odd man rushes and breakaways. Were chances created by these tactics? Most definitely. Breakthrough goals? Nope. For the second night in a row, the stellar Buckeye Goalie Corps produced a shutout.
Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun
Minnesota-Duluth Honorable Mention: (tie) Hanna Baskin & Ida Karlsson
Can't say enough about how well the UMD Defenders played. For Saturday, I'll recognize the 1st D-Pair. Hanna & Ida led all shot blockers. Baskin snuffed out 5 Buckeye Shots; Karlsson was just behind with 4 Blocks.
Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Jenn Gardiner & Cayla Barnes
Assists on the GWG. See the Hannah Bilka #2 Star write-up.
#3 Star: Eve Gascon, Minnesota-Duluth
Eve gave her team every chance to win. The GWG was essentially unstoppable. Even so, Gascon could have just as easily presided over a 2-1 win. Again, see below.
#2 Star: Hannah Bilka, Ohio State
Hannah scores a lot; but Saturday's GWG has to be one my favorite Bilka Goals.
The stubborn Bulldog PK almost kept Buckeye PP at bay for the whole weekend. In fact, the UMD killers held the fort for 115 minutes and 42 seconds of hockey action. But the Bucks finally found a way to break through.
The OSU Power Play began by working the perimeter, with
Cayla Barnes up high. The crucial sequence began with a crisp pass from Cayla to
Jenn Gardiner. Then, an authoritative diagonal pass from Jenn to Hannah. It couldn't have been more perfect: strong pace; right in Bilka's wheelhouse.
I remember thinking to myself "This could be heaven." Relax, said the Buckeyes. We are programmed to score. We may keep you in suspense, but we will never bore!"
Hannah's one-timer? Sheer awesomeness. The play? Tick-Tac-Toe. Buckeye Goal. BUCKEYE GOAL! (copyright Rick Bannister)
#1 Star: Amanda Thiele, Ohio State
Perfect day for Amanda, stopping all 18 shots. Not a large quantity of shots; but definitely some quality saves. Remember the Bulldogs created some great chances, including breakaways. As the last line of defense, Amanda held firm on all of those scoring opportunities. Good thing; every one of Thiele's saves were necessary for the win.
And thus Amanda completed her half of the back-to-back shutouts. A remarkable team accomplishment against a quality opponent.
Gotta love the Buckeye Goalie Corps. The excellent chemistry within the position group is obvious. At the end of every period and during every media timeout, the goalies can be seen giving each other advice and encouragement. That kind of unity pays dividends. As it did Saturday.
Confidential To Quinn K: Can't claim that every one of the 105,000 is paying attention; but every time I see you on the Football Scoreboard I'm filled with Buckeye Hockey Pride.
