Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

The Buckeyes spotted St. Cloud a 2-goal lead but "stormed" back in the third period to knot the game up, then got the extra point in a shootout. St. Cloud scored a goal each in the first two periods to take a 2-0 lead. Those goals were scored by Julia Tylke and Emma Turbyville. In the third period, the Buckeye goals were scored by Rebecca Freiburger and Jessica Dunne. Neither team scored in overtime, so the game went to a shootout where Ohio State's Dani Sadek scored the only goal and goaltender Kassidy Sauve stonewalled all three Husky shooters. Ohio State outshot St. Cloud 38-31 with Sauve stopping 29 of those 31 shots. Husky backstop Janine Alder stopped 36 of the 38 shots she faced. Next week Ohio State hosts the Mavericks of Minnesota State. St. Cloud will host Bemidji State.

Well, given the tie, I'd have to say it was partly cloudy, rather than a true storm. But something big happened in 3rd Period on Saturday. See the WCHA Thread.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Gonna be heading down to the OSU Ice Rink here in a little bit. Ohio State welcomes the Mavericks of Minnesota State this weekend in the last home games for seniors Breanne Grant and Katie Matheny. These two should really be admired and honored accordingly this weekend by fans and their teammates for their work ethic, perseverance, and resiliency in the face of playing for three different coaches in their four years here at Ohio State! They will be sorely missed and this poster wishes both of them the absolute best in all their endeavors. The numbers indicate this will be a highly competitive series as the two teams split earlier this season in Mankato by identical scores of 2-1. The Buckeyes took Friday's contest with the Mavericks coming back to win Saturday's game. The Buckeyes currently set in 6th place in the WCHA standings with 21 points, two behind 5th-place St. Cloud and two ahead of 7th-place Bemidji. Those two teams actually play each other this weekend in St. Cloud. Minnesota State has had more success this season than in the recent past, but sets in 8th place with 11 points. Should be an interesting series. For those coming in from out of town, the weather should not be a problem ... high of 38 today and a high of 57 tomorrow (typical Ohio weather). The chance of precipitation is 0% today, 10% tomorrow. I am taking off. See everyone at the game later!! :)

Ugh. Wish we had somebody who could score consistently. I thought we'd win tonight for sure.

Yeah, I love our team, but we have to figure out the goal scoring. We cannot expect Kassidy Sauve to pitch a shutout every game. She has been spectacular this season, but that's a little much to ask. We have plenty of talented girls who can put the puck in the net. They just need to do it. As for the numbers tonight, the Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks 41-25 with Kassidy Sauve stopping 24 of those shots and Minnesota State's Brianna Quade earning 40 saves. Demi Gardner scored MSU's goal and the Buckeyes' goal was scored by Maddy Field. Neither team scored in OT, so the game went to a shootout where the Mavericks prevailed to get the extra point. I'll have to pull up the box score for this one as the shootout went ten rounds, which was a record for Ohio State. Minnesota State's shootout goals were scored by Anna Keys, Steph Keryluk, Hannah Davidson, and Amanda Conway (game-winner). The Buckeye shootout goals were scored by Julianna Iafallo, Lauren Spring, and Lauren Boyle. The teams are back at it tomorrow with the Buckeyes honoring seniors Breanne Grant and Katie Matheny. The ceremony is reportedly (according to tonight's recap on ohiostatebuckeyes.com) being held before the game tomorrow, which starts at 1:07 pm.

The problem is the power play. It needs an overhaul. Shortening the bench so much also leads to tired players causing injuries and penalties. While the buckeyes outshot Minnesota they had far less scoring opportunities.

It is not only the powerplay that is anemic, the offense is non existent. There is a lot of selfish play and unless this changes, results will be same. To start, create traffic in front of opponent's net. Make it difficult for the goalie to see the shot! Try that on the PP. Quick outlet passes, D feel compelled to skate the puck out of their end continuously causing too many turn overs while forwards are standing still. A lot of positive on this team but a few simple changes would make a difference.

The forwards know the D dont pass and have just stopped skating. How many times do the F go offside hitting the breaks when a pass is not made. Puck movement is non existent in neutral zone. If Minnesota did not go in a defensive shell the last 10 minutes they would have won in regulation.

Both coaches were very offensive players. Offense came easy to them when playing so they are frustrated trying to understand why these players can't do it. Part of the issue is having 2 goal or less scores on every PP and playing half the game. Time to play the scorers more and open up the offense.

I'm not sure what you're advocating. OSU doesn't have much in the way of offensive talent this year; I think everyone would agree on that. Do you want those players played more or less?

Top 3 goal scorers on the team are a sophomore followed by 2 freshman. Maybe it's time to focus on next year rather than playing more senior and less offensive players ?

Short Night. Friday evening stars only get to shine briefly. But they're posted on the WCHA thread.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

The Buckeyes played much better and were able to score goals today to win by a final score of 4-2. Neither team scored in the first period, but Ohio State lit the lamp three times in the second period on goals by Julianna Iafallo, Jessica Dunne, and Breanne Grant. Katie Matheny scored a breakaway goal in the third period to push the lead to 4-0 before Minnesota State was able to get a couple of late goals from Steph Keryluk and Hannah Davidson. The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks 35-26 with Brianna Quade getting 31 saves and the Bucks' Kassidy Sauve stopping the puck 24 times. Minnesota State will travel to Bemidji State next weekend to take on the Beavers. The Buckeyes will be in Grand Forks to take on North Dakota as the regular season comes to a close.

Great win today. Stoked that both Grant and Matheny were able to score on senior night.
Spot on. I'm going to reflect a little more before posting the Final 3 Stars of the season. But you've cut right to the chase. Tonight this will be a story that largely writes itself.

Coming Soon: Senior Night Done Right.

C'mon this guy doesn't know Minnesota State from Minnesota, you expect him to be clear on who to play?

As is always the case, I am going to miss the 3 Stars Of The Game ... and it's driving me nuts that I still don't know who you are (haha)! :D

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Ohio State took game one in Grand Forks earlier tonight by a final score of 4-2. The Buckeye goals were scored by Maddy Field (2), Lauren Boyle, and Samantha Bouley. The Fighting Hawk goals were scored by Rebekah Kolstad and Ryleigh Houston. North Dakota outshot Ohio State 34-15. Buckeye goaltender Kassidy Sauve stopped 32 of the 34 shots she faced. UND goaltender Lexie Shaw stopped 11 of the 15 shots she faced. The two teams are back at it tomorrow at 2:07 pm EST.

Very nice win to have. The Buckeyes have actually won regular season series with UND, with 7 of the 12 possible points already in the bank.

Still a lot to play for, though. Earning some points today and grabbing the #5 seed would be a real positive for the program. Go Bucks!

Unfortunately the Bucks were not able to close the deal today, but the good news is they did not drop in the league standings (stayed in 5th place), so they are going to get another crack at UND next weekend in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs! It hasn't been the greatest season in the world, but I really appreciate the job Coach Muzerall and her staff have done this season, not to mention the hard work the girls have put in all season. Clearly, this program took a step forward this season with more wins and moving up a couple spots in the standings. As for today's contest, UND won by a final score of 3-2. Maddy Field and Lauren Boyle scored for Ohio State. The Fighting Hawk goals were scored by Emma Nuutinen, Kayla Gardner, and Charly Dahlquist. North Dakota outshot the Buckeyes 29-17 with UND goaltender Lexie Shaw getting 15 stops and the Buckeyes Kassidy Sauve stopping 26 of the 29 shots she faced. Kassidy now has 1,031 saves on the season and has a chance to break the OSU single season record of 1,085, set by Lisa Steffes back in 2011. As I indicated earlier, these two teams will be back at it next weekend in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs in Grand Forks. Should be interesting.

Too bad about the loss. But if you had told me at the start of the weekend we'd split and get the #5 seed, I would have taken it.

Generically speaking, 5th Place is never the goal. But in context, including the tumultuous Summer of 2016, it really is a nice accomplishment. Something positive to build on.

Kassidy now has 1,031 saves on the season and has a chance to break the OSU single season record of 1,085, set by Lisa Steffes back in 2011.
Well then. Guess we'll just have to make it to the Final Face-Off, so as to give Kassidy every chance at the record.:)

Good catch by you. Had I hazarded a guess, my thought would have been that Kassidy broke that record a couple of weeks ago.

As I indicated earlier, these two teams will be back at it next weekend in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs in Grand Forks. Should be interesting.
Should be a competitive series, winnable by either team. And again, understood in context, being in the #4 vs. #5 series is both a good result and a good opportunity.
