Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Too bad about the loss. But if you had told me at the start of the weekend we'd split and get the #5 seed, I would have taken it.

Generically speaking, 5th Place is never the goal. But in context, including the tumultuous Summer of 2016, it really is a nice accomplishment. Something positive to build on.

Well then. Guess we'll just have to make it to the Final Face-Off, so as to give Kassidy every chance at the record.:)

Good catch by you. Had I hazarded a guess, my thought would have been that Kassidy broke that record a couple of weeks ago.

Should be a competitive series, winnable by either team. And again, understood in context, being in the #4 vs. #5 series is both a good result and a good opportunity.

Given the adversity this group of girls has dealt with ... three different coaches in the last three seasons, I, too, will take a split in Grand Forks and the #5 seed in the WCHA Tournament. I completely agree with you that this is something the coaching staff and the players can build on. I am hoping for a Final Face-Off appearance for our team, but I think Kassidy just might get that record next weekend, especially if the series goes three games! I got that information on Kassidy's save numbers from the recap on ohiostatebuckeyes.com. With the shots on goal numbers this season, I also would have thought that Kassidy already had that single season record! I agree that this series vs UND will be highly competitive and winnable by either team. It would be nice to see this team get to the WCHA Final Face-Off for the first time since 2013.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Really think Ohio State has a chance at an upset with Sauve in goal, she has the ability to steal games. If Ohio can generate some offence and stay away from penalties they will give themselves a chance. Ended season with best possible matchup going forward......Go Bucks Go !

I totally agree, of all the road teams this weekend, I believe we have the best chance to win our series. As Pgb correctly stated in an earlier post, Ohio State did take 7 of the possible 12 points in the series this season and has been very competitive with North Dakota lately. Winning this afternoon's game will be key because neither team seems to be able to win two games in a row vs the other. That will put the losing team in an unenviable position of having to do just that (win two in a row). Kassidy is having a spectacular season. I was actually a little disappointed that Kassidy was not one of the ten finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, but then, having been an OSU Women's Hockey fan for as long as I have been, I have gotten used to things being done based on the name on the front of the hockey sweater.

You'll always have Spooner. She was the one player that caused me to worry when OSU came to Ridder. Oh, and Bonhomme, too.

Excellent point, and not only are those two outstanding hockey players, they are also wonderful young ladies who are great ambassadors for women's hockey and tOSU. We are heading to Women's Worlds in another month or so and cannot wait to see Spooner!

Today's win was big, no question about it. All I have in front of me is a box score. The North Dakota goals were scored by Amy Menke and Jordan Hampton. The Ohio State goals were scored by Julianna Iafallo, Katie Matheny, and Lauren Boyle with the GWG in OT. As has been the case for much of the season, Ohio State was outshot 33-14. Lexie Shaw had 11 saves for the Fighting Hawks and Kassidy Sauve had 31 saves for the Buckeyes. The game was played this afternoon because the Fighting Hawk Men's Team is home this weekend taking on Nebraska-Omaha. Tomorrow's game will also be an afternoon tilt, starting at 3:07 pm EST. Here is a link to live stats from the game.

I am not sure if Kassidy fits all the Patty Kazmaier criteria but I will say something. She is the MVP of the entire league. Take away any of the other nominees and their teams would still be competitive. Take away Kassidy and this is a 5 win team at best. She is unbelievable. Two weeks in a row being outshot more than 2-1 and still coming out on top. Something to behold. Now if they can just get a shot on the power play! 5 minutes with no shots on net almost cost them the game. Wonder if Kassidy could quarterback the PP?

Your point is well-taken, and I agree that Kassidy is definitely the MVP of this league. And not to disparage the rest of the team, but yeah, with the issues we have had scoring goals this season, we definitely would not have had this many wins without Kassidy. She is a special player, and just as great a person, too. She will not win the Patty Kazmaier Award, but she richly deserves whatever awards do come her way. I am very happy that we are going to have her for two more seasons! I was just curious, the young lady for UND who got a five-minute penalty, along with a game misconduct, does that mean she has to sit tomorrow? Or are the rules different in the women's game?

Same rules. The only exception is the checking rule.

The Box Score I found indicates Game Misconduct, Not Game Disqualification. With a DQ, you miss the next game. When it's "only" a Game Misconduct, you're done for the night, but that's it.

Things certainly could have been worse for UND. Had Amy Menke been unavailable for Game 2, that would have been a major loss.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

This series is going to a third game tomorrow as the Fighting Hawks won today's game by a final score of 4-1. Kassidy Sauve established a new single season save record for the Buckeyes with 33 saves on 37 UND shots. Her UND counterpart, Lexie Shaw, had 17 saves on 18 Ohio State shots. Maddy Field scored Ohio State's only goal. The UND goals were scored by Charly Dahlquist, Amy Menke, Vilma Tanskanen, and Ryleigh Houston. The two teams meet tomorrow at 3:07 pm with the winner moving onto the WCHA Final Face-Off.

I have to correct myself on this, Kassidy Sauve saved 33 of the 36 shots she faced. UND's 37th shot was into an empty net at the end of the game. Kassidy had been pulled for an extra attacker and was not on the ice for that one. Should be a great game tomorrow.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Ohio State's season came to an end earlier today. It was a tough ending as the Buckeyes dropped a 2-1 OT game. North Dakota opened the scoring in the first period on a goal from Kayla Gardner. The score stayed that way until OSU's Maddy Field knotted things up with a goal in the third period. The game went into OT where North Dakota's Emma Nuutinen scored the game-winner at the 9:04 mark of the overtime period. North Dakota outshot Ohio State in today's game 33-29 with North Dakota netminder Lexie Shaw stopping 28 shots and Ohio State's Kassidy Sauve stopping 31 of the shots she faced. That brought Kassidy's save total to 1,135, the 6th most in NCAA history for a season. Since this is the last game of the season, I will include a link to the recap from ohiostatebuckeyes.com. Good luck to North Dakota and the remaining teams in the WCHA Final Face-Off.

sorry to hear that, they deserved better. The upside is that you can expect things to get better now with a smart coach & some stability. I figured Potter would come through for OSU but I KNOW Nadine will.

Agree, team should improve next year with new Freshman giving team some depth and 2 years from now they should be competing in Frozen Four and be right there !

Thank you for the kind words. I agree the girls deserved better. They work so hard. The girls were practicing and doing drills themselves in the preseason before we even had a coach in place. We have a lot of great leaders on this team and I am proud of the program ... the girls and the coaching staff. I am thrilled with Coach Nadine and her staff. Nadine is exactly who we needed at this juncture and I hope she is here for a long time! She really cares about the kids and the program and I totally agree with you that Coach Nadine will come through for us. She will recruit and coach well, and this program will get to the next level. We have a solid foundation here. Kassidy Sauve and all the blueliners will return. If we can get some consistent goal scoring next season, we will be a tough team to beat. I am bummed that the season is over for them, but I believe the future is bright here.

Frozen Four two years from now? Wow, that is one lofty goal, but I like the way you think!! :)

Meant WCHA Final Faceoff !
You could get there next year. UMD gets hit by graduation, and I'm not really sure where UND is heading once Krzyzaniak, Menke, Hirschy, Shaw, etc. are gone.

If we can just get some consistent goal-scoring next season, I believe we could finish in the top four and host a first-round series. I think that is a realistic goal.
