Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Agree, team should improve next year with new Freshman giving team some depth and 2 years from now they should be competing in Frozen Four and be right there !

Agree. 2 years for WCHA final 4. Next year will be a transition year.

The video announcer kept repeating all weekend that Ohio was only running with 8-9 players which I think they have been doing for awhile now. This tells me the problem may not be depth, but lack of high end talent. If UND ran with just 2 lines the games would not have been as close.

Ohio had a weaker second half of the season so whatever changes were made after thanksgiving did not work.

First WCHA go around: 4-8-2 with 21GF and 31GA
Second WCHA go around: 3-8-3 with 20GF and 41GA

Records are close, but goals for/against are both trending in the wrong direction.

A number of solid forwards coming next year but will need a year to adjust. 2 years out, I expect this team will be right up there. Stability in the program is a must.

Here's the thing.....OSU have been playing with a short bench most of the year. They are used to it, ND isn't. To say it wouldn't have been close had they done the same is being very shortsighted. if that were the case, a smart coach like Idalski would have gone to that strategy without batting an eye. As for your stat comparison between the 1st half and 2nd half, interesting but would not say that results are trending in the wrong direction without having a closer look at the schedule which I have not done by the way.

I have watched this team play a few times this year and we all know where their strengths are however I also believe that they have returning forwards that will surprise many next year. This is a team that played with 2 seniors on the roster and they took UND to OT in game 3. Next year may be better than a "transition" year for the Buckeyes. In any case, congrats to them on a fine season, they certainly exceeded the expectations of many.

I think that is the mantra for many teams around the country. It is hard to get the puck in the net.

Haha, especially when you're trying to do it against the goaltenders we have in this conference!

Regarding the schedule, we played Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth on the road in the second half of the season. A couple of notable differences regarding the record would be after splitting with St. Cloud on the road in the first half, we were defeated and tied (SO win). After a win and a tie (SO loss) vs ND in the first half of the season, we split with the Fighting Hawks at home for Senior Weekend. One other notable thing with the first half vs second half, and this also accounts for the a good chunk of the goal differential, would be a 3-0 loss and a 1-1 tie (SO loss) at Wisconsin in the first half, then 7-0 and 5-0 losses when Wisconsin came to Columbus. So, I would agree with you, upon closer examination of the opponents and the road trips, I don't necessarily think it's accurate to say things are trending in the wrong direction. We also had some injuries we had to deal with, which shortened the bench that much more.

Bottom line is the team will only get better, a lot of positives to take forward next year and that hasn't been the case for the last couple of years ! Already looking forward to next year !

I totally agree with you that there were a lot of positives this season. Clearly, the team was better than last year, and will be better next season. We just need to get Kassidy some more goals so she doesn't have to shut everyone out or hold them to one goal. I am definitely looking forward to next season! Thankfully, our men's team has some more games left (and hopefully an NCAA Tournament berth, although that is up in the air), and I'll have some NHL Playoff Hockey (CBJ). Otherwise, it would be a really long offseason! :)

What is noticeable on this Ohio thread is how positive everyone is compared to the previous few years. If there is a reduction in transfers out that will prove its better in the dressing room too. So far only 1 transferred and that was just before the Christmas break.

Crutch, the only missing names on the roster at this point are Ariana DePinto and Crystal Sorem. Is it one of them who transferred out? I knew they were no longer on the team, but I had not heard that they transferred. I can tell you from talking to the current members of the team that what you say is true regarding the dressing room. The ones who have stayed are a tight-knit group. I don't anticipate any further transfers. I think a big reason for the positivity here is the girls who are here are developing and becoming pretty good players. It also helps that we have one of the best goaltenders in the country, just my opinion, but I believe that opinion is shared by many. We also have some goal-scoring coming in from everything I have read and heard from the folks I talk to at the games. We also have a coach who cares about the kids and the program, who I hope will be here for a long time. Talking to Coach Nadine and seeing how she is leading our program, I now understand why the Minnesota fans did not want to lose her.

She is something special and you guys can expect a lot of great seasons to come. I feel bad for the girls who have had to endure the last few years there. As much as I am going to hate having to beat OSU because it is going to get harder but the conference is going to get a lot harder to win & you guys will be in the mix.

Thanks for the nice post Ne7minder! I completely agree on Coach Nadine (something special for sure), and I think we have a bright future here. I also feel bad for those girls who are juniors or younger and have had a different coach every season. OTOH, some of the girls who have stayed through it all have said that going through that adversity has molded them into the young ladies they have become. The WCHA has been the best conference in the country for a long time. A strong OSU program will make it that much better.

Careful...You're letting your midwest elitism show through. :) Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Ah, the memories.

About a dozen years ago OSU seriously considered a move to the CHA. There were some selling points. But in the end, the decision was that we were already in the right place & that we were staying put. Pleased and relieved, I posted a list of reasons supporting the decision. There were about eight items on the list. Some were serious, like maintaining/growing the Big 10 rivalries with MN & WI. Others were a little more light-hearted like "Hey, everyone has just learned to say Man-Kate-Oh, and not Man-Caught-Oh."

Anyhow, in the midst of the long list, I made a similar comment about the WCHA being the best conference in Women's College Hockey. In context, it was just a little cheerleading supporting the decision to stay. But some eastern posters chose to lift the comment out of context and challenge it, while ignoring everything else I wrote.

I'm guessing osualum86 won't get that kind of pushback this time.

I remember when Ohio State was strongly considering joining the CHA. Count me among those who are glad we stayed even though it has been a rough road! I may be wrong, but I don't think we have finished in the top four and hosted a first-round WCHA Playoff Series since the 2006-07 season. It would be nice to see us host again at some point. I think Coach Nadine and her staff will get us there. :)

And then they go and change their name to Minn-A-Soda State. But almost the whole WCHA is on the rise. As Coach "Bah" Harrington said between periods yesterday, "We've more than doubled our wins from the previous two years combined."
