Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Puckdrop14, hard to disagree with your assessment as our puck management has been better in previous games than what I observed today. I missed the first period and turned on the feed at the beginning of the second period, but I certainly noticed the inordinate amount of give aways. It's tough when you let a team get their first league win in years, but I am sure no one feels worse than than the team so I am not going to pile on. Give the Mavericks some credit as they outworked Ohio State today and deserved to win. A couple of final stats that I had not seen at the last post, Ohio State actually outshot Minnesota State 21-19. Maverick backstop Katie Bidulka stopped 20 of the 21 shots she faced. Buckeye netminder Kassidy Sauve stopped 17 of the 19 shots she faced. The Buckeyes will now get a break for Thanksgiving, then are back home for a series vs North Dakota on 12/2 - 12/3. Have a nice Thanksgiving everyone!

The Mavs deserve full credit for the win. They were a pain for the Buckeye D throughout the game with an aggressive forecheck which probably contributed to many of the OSU missteps in their end. They had many quality chances as opposed to the Buckeyes who seemed to be pushed to the outside for most of the game and other than the goal they scored were never really in this game offensively. The Mavs were also very good on the PK not allowing OSU any openings and doing a great job of closing down the shooting lanes. Two young teams who will just get better and better. There do not appear to be any free rides in the WCHA this year for any teams. Three of four WCHA series split this past weekend with one going into OT twice!

You communicated this better than I did in my post, but yeah, this is spot on, and that's what I observed in watching the last two periods, which is that the Mavericks really made things difficult for Ohio State at both ends of the ice. Give Coach Harrington and his staff credit for having a great game plan and also to his players for executing that game plan.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing Thanksgiving weekend. Many teams were off this weekend for the break and will be back in action next weekend. Ohio State will welcome North Dakota to the OSU Ice Rink for games on Friday and Saturday. Ohio State enters this weekend with a 3-8-1 WCHA record (7-8-1 overall), good for sixth place in the league. Bemidji State also has ten points, but the Buckeyes have two games in hand on the Beavers. The Fighting Hawks (sounds weird, doesn't it?) will come into the game with a record of 5-4-3-1 in the WCHA (1 indicates a shootout win) and 7-5-4 overall. That puts UND in 4th in the WCHA with 19 points. Both teams are more than a few points behind the teams in front of them as Ohio State is four points behind 5th-place St. Cloud State and UND is five points behind 3rd-place Minnesota-Duluth, so I expect to see a couple of hard-fought games this weekend. Friday's game starts at 6:07 pm EST and Saturday's game is a 3:07 pm EST start. Admission and parking is free.

Thoughts and prayers to the victims on campus today. Scary stuff for all, hope the team was in a safe place.

Indeed. Thoughts and prayers for everyone on campus today, as well as healing for those who had to be taken to local hospitals with injuries.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

The Buckeyes and the Fighting Hawks skated to a hard-fought 1-1 tie. North Dakota did pick up the extra point by winning the shootout. Neither team scored in the first period. Ohio State's Maddy Field opened the scoring early in the second period and it was 1-0 until the middle of the third period when North Dakota's Ryleigh Houston scored to knot things up at 1-1. That is how things ended in both regulation and the OT, so the game went into a shootout where Ryleigh Houston and Emma Nuutinen scored for the Fighting Hawks. Jincy Dunne scored for the Buckeyes. Ohio State was outshot 43-23 with Kassidy Sauve saving 42 and North Dakota's Lexie Shaw getting 22 saves. The teams are back at it tomorrow at 3:07 pm EST.

Dunne's goal in the shoot out was a thing of beauty...what she did with the toe of her stick to freeze Shaw.

And I thought that I was watching the OSU game winner in OT when (don't know who it was) an OSU forward went streaking down the right wing and fired a cannon from around the top and outside of the face off circle that rose cross crease headed for the 2 hole and just missed. Thought it was in and would have been a highlight reel if it was.

There's still time to check out last night's stars before heading to today's game.:o See the WCHA thread.

Preview: I'm on board with Blackbeard's take on Jincy's shootout goal.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Bummed I missed this weekend's games. Very good pair of results for our team. Any noteworthy highlights I should know about?

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Only saw parts of last night's game and just finished watching the first period of today's game after the fact (delayed feed...different time zone)...but what a difference. UND came blasting out of the chute and put the blocks to OSU for most of the period with OSU somehow managing to score with 29 seconds left on the clock to head into the dressing room with the lead!

A few really nice plays. Quick game.

I am going to guess you are talking about #6 defenseman Lauren Boyle's breakaway. Myself and others thought it was in, too, but credit UND goaltender Lexie Shaw for getting just enough of that puck to send it wide of the net. Then again, I might be mistaken on this as I thought Lauren's breakaway was in the third period rather than OT.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Ohio State gets four of the six points this weekend with a big win today by a final score of 2-1. Ohio State was outshot in today's game 44-18, but the Buckeyes made their shots count, scoring a goal in each of the first two periods. The Buckeye goals were scored by freshmen today ... forwards Rebecca Freiburger and Samantha Bouley. Sarah Lecavalier scored for the Fighting Hawks on a great shot that just beat Kassidy Sauve in the top left corner of the net. That would be the only goal Sauve would give up as she stopped 43 of the 44 shots she faced. Lexie Shaw saved 16 of the 18 shots she faced for North Dakota. The Buckeyes welcome #1-ranked Wisconsin to the OSU Ice Rink next weekend before taking a break for the Holidays.

You're right...just went back to check the video...it was #6 Lauren Boyle...both times...in the third period and in OT. I was wrong on the exact location...the shot was taken from the middle of the face off circle.

I was happy for the girls this weekend. They have worked pretty hard this season, and the coaching staff has only had a couple months with the kids due to work visa issues. Heck, we are still waiting for another assistant (Hokey Langan) to get clearance to be here. Anyway, enough about government red tape! After a number of near-misses vs top ten teams this season (the exception being a win over Bemidji on the road earlier this season when they were ranked in the top ten), the girls finally got to taste victory yesterday. The expressions on their faces after a big win like that are priceless. Kassidy Sauve has been outstanding in net this season, although sometimes I worry that we are making her work too hard. Knowing Kassidy, though, I don't think she would have it any other way. She likes stopping pucks, and she is having a spectacular season doing it. I am not going to make any bold predictions about wins and losses this season. I am just going to support the kids and enjoy the process. I think we have a great coaching staff here now and I will take four points vs a top ten team any day.

Your goalie better like shots, she stopped 85 of 87 this weekend! If you can see it, chances are you can stop it and the Ohio defense is allowing her to see it.

Yeah, in reading the story, coach actually talked to the players during the first intermission about blocking shots so they did not get to Kassidy and they ended up doing a better job of that the rest of the way. The numbers bear that out as North Dakota had 19 shots on goal out of the gate in the first period, 44 for the game (11 in the second period, 14 in the third), so Ohio State did a better job of blocking shots in the second and third periods. Still a big shot discrepancy, but then, I would be willing to bet that UND would rather have gotten a win and the three points than the "shots on goal" victory. Games like yesterday prove that shots on goal can be a very overrated stat. I'll take the win and the three points.
