Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

The Buckeyes took down St. Cloud earlier today by a final score of 3-0. Obviously, the story for Ohio State continues to be the back end ... the defensemen and goaltender Kassidy Sauve. Another storyline from today's game was all three goals were scored by freshmen ... Crystal Sorem, Samantha Bouley, and Jincy Dunne. Jincy's goal was an empty netter at the end after the Huskies had pulled goaltender Janine Alder. Ohio State outshot St. Cloud 26-20. Buckeye netminder Kassidy Sauve stopped all 20 shots she faced. St. Cloud goaltender Janine Alder stopped 23 of the 25 shots she faced. The two teams are back at it tomorrow at 2:07 pm EST. One other note ... Ohio State won ten games all of last season. At this point they stand 6-6-1 (2-6-1 WCHA).

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

I went up to watch the game as a form of mental therapy. OSU was easily the better team, but they are definitely a work in progress. Some of the passing was off, but the biggest issue was that they kept getting caught up ice and giving away odd man rushes. It didn't hurt them because St Cloud effectively has no offense, and the 8-9 odd man rushes resulted in only one shot on goal from a bad angle, plus a few that missed the net by several feet. Most just dissolved into nothing, with some credit going to the Buckeye defensemen.

So, there's stuff to like about this team, and I'd expect them to get better. And, to reassure pgb, I saw no signs of the sort of dangerous play I've complained about in the past.

I'm sincerely impressed you made the trip. That's true support for Women's Hockey. Good on you.

This last isn't offensive in any way, but I can't say it's reassuring, given the source. In your case, I'd recommend making more selective use of "Minnesota Nice." On the subject of Ohio State, you're neither.;)

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

The Huskies rebounded today and beat Ohio State by a final score of 4-1. St. Cloud's goals were scored by Kayla Friesen, Caroline Markstrom, Alyssa Erickson, and Julia Tylke. Tylke's goal was an empty netter. Ohio State's goal was scored by Jessica Dunne. Kassidy Sauve stopped 24 or the 27 shots she faced. St. Cloud goaltender Janine Alder stopped 23 of the 24 shots she faced. St. Cloud outshot Ohio State 28-24. Ohio State is back in action next weekend as they face Minnesota State at Mankato. St. Cloud will travel to Bemidji to take on the Beavers.

It was our day for a road trip & we did see a couple of other MN fans there. In the first period the Buckeye D seemed to misunderstand the big sheet & got caught pinched in & deep that led to a bunch of odd-man rush break-aways. SCSU didn't score on any of them in large part because the D was able to get back in a hurry. The first two goals were forwards moving unhampered across the front of the net. Nadine did not look pleased. They did correct the positioning issue & the odd-man rushes disappeared. The Dunn kids both stood out to me & I think OSU is going to get much better but they need a couple of scorers.

Again, I'm very impressed by interest in & support for Women's D-1 Hockey. I certainly our understand that our new head coach is a draw for U of M fans. Even so: You, Eeyore and the others who traveled earn a full thumbs up.

And yes, I do know the geography and realize that St. Cloud is a very manageable commute from the Twin Cities -- no overnight lodging required. Still impressed by the willingness to attend as a neutral fan.

Sure wish Findlay still had their program. That gave Columbus-based fans a comparable travel opportunity.

There are several of us who are junkies & can't make it 2 weeks without a hockey fix. Some of us have gotten to Duluth for games when there is nothing going on at home. When all else fails we see each other at high school games. Yeah, we are all pulling for Nadine & hoping OSU can be the NCAA runner-up to MN ;) in the future but both teams have some interesting results so it is fun to see them matched up.

Maybe not, but his comment certainly isn't unfounded. Some of Handrahan's teams looked like staying out of the box wasn't much of a priority. As I've said before, it wasn't until Minnesota cleaned up a lot of its own undisciplined play that the W/L ratio started to improve. I'm happy to see that the Buckeyes are showing some commitment to doing the same. I don't believe that chippy play by anyone is good for the growth of the women's game.

That is awesome that you and Eeyore took a road trip up to St. Cloud to watch your former assistant in action. I have been very pleased with the progress our program has made. I agree that we need some more scoring and from what I hear from folks who know more about our 2017 recruits than I do, we have some scorers coming in.

Unfortunately for us Ohio State fans, the closest road trips these days are seven hours to Madison, WI or five hours to State College, PA. Mercyhurst (Erie, PA) and Robert Morris (Pittsburgh, PA) are manageable drives, but neither are on the schedule this season. We went to Madison last month and we are heading out to Penn State for the games on 1/6 - 1/7, but those are overnighters. Can't do that in one day. I am with you on Findlay having a program. Those were the days. I don't remember if we played them or not, but Wayne State in the Detroit area had women's hockey at one point. That would have been a manageable trip, too.

I hear you on the "junkies" thing!! Our women will not be home until 12/2 - 12/3. No way can I wait that long for a hockey fix. Thankfully, our men were home this weekend so we went to one of their games vs UConn. The girls are on the road again next weekend (Minnesota State), they don't play the weekend of Thanksgiving, then they finally get back home.

You piqued my curiosity, so I did a little digging. All-Time, the Buckeyes were 4-0 against the Warriors. Two games were played in Columbus: March 2-3, 2001.

The other two were held December 30-31, 2010. The Media Guide lists those games as "vs. Wayne State" rather than "at Wayne State." My guess is that those games were played somewhere in Greater Detroit, but not on the Warrior's home ice, wherever that was. IIRC, Wayne State had no on-campus rink, which was a major headache for the entire run of their program. Heck, for all I know, maybe there was no single home rink. Maybe they simply migrated from one facility to the next, depending on where ice time was available.

In any event, I was at the home games in 2001, but didn't make the trip in 2010.

I recall being told by someone who had first hand knowledge that they had a rink but as you said it was not on campus. Don't recall any other details.

Your commitment to fairness and respect are clearly evidenced by this formulation of the issue. Other posters have different motivations.

Perhaps you've forgotten, but a couple of years ago this subject generated a rather ugly argument on this board. A few posts ago, you saw a cute little punch and cute little pushback. Those are embers from the stale old argument. Best to leave it at. An attempt to fully re-litigate the matter would go wrong in a hurry.

Yes, that rings true. And given that the program has been gone for around 5 years, it's understandable that memories are fuzzy...

My comment earlier in this thread was not in any way intended as a punch. It was intended as a complement. You have a team now that's fun to watch. I also don't think it has anything to do with Nadine Muzerall becoming the coach, just mostly a matter of cleaning out the last of the Handrahan regime. Without a few specific players who graduated from last year's team, I strongly suspect that this would have been the case had Jenny Potter still been the coach.

Eeyore - I want you to have your info right...here are the "recruits" Handrahan is responsible for (Sauve, Dunne x 2, Boyle, Sadek, Field, Iafallo, Riemenschneider, Grant, Bouley, Matheny, Langermeier, Spring) also the class of 2017 - Maltais & Skaggs (I've probably missed some)
Cleaning out? Seriously? I respectfully disagree.. Please respond and let me know if your not happy with these players? Some trolls on this thread have taken shots at him and that's their right. My opinion is he did an awesome job of recruiting some great players. Others have made comments about "Physical Play" ....it's called playing hard and being tough to play against. His teams knocked off Wisco a few times and tied Minny in the his time there....the results were there. Please don't give credit to other coaches that inherited a great crop of players and haven't done anything with it. Potter and Muzzerall both inherited a team capable of 15+ wins.....this program was not in shambles when Handrahan left........I've said this a few times on this board...Handrahan got a raw deal by the admin. IMO

We were not talking about 'playing hard and being tough to play against'.
That being said, more power to you. I, for one, respect your defense of Coach Handrahan and your speaking your opinion he got a raw deal.

Excellent post. Keep in mind those girls who decommitted when Handrahan left, like Gardner, then add in those who bailed under Ms Potter, like Kepler. I believe most of the top 2018 commits were also recruited by Handrahan.

The team was one step away from being very solid before the events over the last 2 years set the program back.

I can only hope Ms Muzerall starts to focus on some offense. I suspect a new coach coming into an unknown situation is working from the defense out. The defense seems to be a step ahead of the forwards right now. Only having 2 forwards with more than 1 goal in 5on5 situations (empty netters dont count, I consider those stats padding) has to put a lot of pressure on the goalie.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2016-2017

The OSU roster will continue to be a work in progress, big class coming in next year will displace some current players as Muzzerall gets "her players" to Columbus. Potter was on this road also and Muzzerall's ties to Minny should garner some high end players from there in the future. Always believed OSU has a chance to compete with MN and Wisc. with their resources. If this happens good luck to the lower half of the WCHA.
