Ohio State 22-23 Are we Better Than You Think?

I think the point is that this strange dude came to another team’s forum to complain about the very thing Quinnipiac themselves is known for.

Also, average age shows something, but not everything. Cornell has a high average age because its freshmen this year are older than normal and because it has a lot of fourth-year seniors. Quinnipiac’s average age is high because it has SEVEN fifth-year seniors. Well within the rules, but a temporary loophole due to COVID and something most of its competitors in the ECAC are forbidden from doing. And also a massive advantage over teams with less experience.

This is not really the place but as you brought it up if you are referring to the no scholarships and no grad students that's not an ECAC issue that's a self inflicted Ivy league issue. And the Ivy league is 6 of the 12 schools not most you guys just don't want to play by the same rules as everyone else that's up to you if you don't like it than have the Ivy's change it.

IceCat speaks for himself, not all QU fans, and is a loose cannon that loves him some Bobcats.

No need for all this Ivy vs non Ivy to play out on Ohio Sts forum, especially on Gameday

Answering the Headline of this thread's question, I would say yes, OSU does look better than people thought they were. Will be interesting to see how they do today.

If OSU gets called for a penalty for a late hit to end the second......grrrrrr. It was a millisecond after the buzzer. Q player(s) should get two for being such frickin pussy's.

Should have been a five minute for sure. That being said, Qpac didn't fold against the boards the way Harvard did and matched our physicality all game. Well deserved win on their part. While I want the Gophers to win it all, I'll certainly root for Q to take out either the pedsters or that school up north.

And now we play the waiting game to see how hard Wisconsin comes after Rohlik and whether Gene Smith will actually do something to keep him. Count me among the skeptical on the latter point.

Your guys played a great game tonight. As a QU fan I got a little nervous in the second and the game could have easily gone the other way. I hope we see more QU vs Ohio game in the future.

OSU badly outplayed Quinnipiac, it’s too bad that wasn’t called a 5-minute major, solid chance you would have won.

OSU's skaters badly outplayed Quinnipiac's skaters. It's kind of a misconception in hockey analysis. The goalie is part of the team, too. QU's goalie badly outplayed OSU's goalie, and in a one-goal game, that's frequently the difference in playoff hockey.

Congrats to Ohio St. on an outstanding season -- your guys played their asses off tonight and deserved more than they got.

I wouldnt say badly out played Dobes fluke 3rd goal made the game out of reach. Dobes didnt have to do much for almost half the game. 20 seconds of bad play cost them in the end. Good Luck in Tampa beat Michigan.

Well what a season it was. Picked 5th and finished 3rd had a chance at 2nd all the way up to the last weekend of the season. Made a run to the semifinals in the conference tournament. I said at the begining of the season just get this team in a regional and some experience at the highest level. They did that and came within 20 seconds of winning today. Just hope the guys who can return do come back. That includes Coach Rohlik he will have an offer from Wisconsin no doubt. I dont think this is the end for him in Columbus but the power of a place you won a title as a player can win you over. They have a higher budget but hope he turns them down and stays in Columbus.

I really hope Rohlik stays, but if he does, he needs to do a better job recruiting. We are not recruiting at the same level that Michigan and Minnesota are, which is why they are in the Frozen Four and we aren't. Yeah, it's great that we "overachieved" this season based on where we were picked, but we're Ohio State. All our programs, Men's Hockey included, should be competing for National Titles. We shouldn't be happy with one win over Harvard in the NCAA Tournament, then getting our asses kicked by Quinnipiac today with a Frozen Four berth on the line. It may be tough to keep Rohlik here. If I were him, I would definitely use the Wisconsin job as leverage to get more $$$ from OSU. If he does leave, we need to bring someone in who is committed to getting this program to the next level. There is no excuse for this program to be satisfied with these token appearances (and early exits) in the NCAA Tournament. Nadine Muzerall turned our Women's Program into a National Power in just a few seasons (4 Frozen Fours) and won it all in her 6th season (2022) with arguably the worst facility in the country. Rohlik has had 10 seasons and hasn't sniffed a National Title, other than the Frozen Four appearance in 2018, and even then, we got beat in the semi-final. I guess I just don't get why most are satisfied with us being an "also-ran" when it comes to NCAA Men's Hockey. I'll probably get jumped on for saying this (not by you klbaum1077, but maybe others), but "just getting there" doesn't do it for me. I want a championship. AD Gene Smith has always said, "We expect all our programs to compete for championships," so I am just following his lead, and I am pretty sure he means National Championships, not just conference championships, when he says that.

Thanks for the classy post. I just have to respectfully disagree with this. We played a great game vs Harvard, then we did what we have done all season, which is not follow up a great game with another great game. If we really played a "great" game today, we would have won. This is backed up by the fact that we only finished a handful of games above .500. This team did not string two great games together all season, which is why they are on their way home to turn in their equipment and QU is moving onto the Frozen Four. This team needs to learn that you have to bring it every shift for 60 minutes. Until they learn that, history will continue to repeat itself and this team will continue to have early exits in the NCAA Tournament (in those years when they actually make the NCAA Tournament). It's hard to be an OSU grad/fan and watch a program that should be way better than they are just continue to be a second-tier program when it comes to actually having a shot at winning National Titles in Men's Hockey.

Well said!
And one of our captains on Ohio State's first ever hockey team in the '63-'64 season who is 80 now told me all he wants now before he checks out of this world is to see our men's team win their first national title. He's waited for 59 friggin seasons! Isn't that kind of ridiculous? (Angry)

Totally agree. It is unfathomable, and inexcusable, really, that Ohio State has never won a National Title in Men's Hockey. What really has me scratching my head on this is everyone seems to be fine with us "just getting there" and never friggin' winning anything.

Congrats to Ohio St. on an outstanding season

I wouldn't call it an outstanding season. We finished 21-16-3 (barely over .500) and didn't make it out of the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Nothing outstanding about that, but thanks for the classy post.

I'm disappointed in not making the FF, and I wouldn't call it outstanding for that reason. Still, I think it's a pretty successful season. We finished 3rd in the undisputed best conference in hockey. Thrashed a higher seeded and very talented Harvard team that nobody was giving us a chance to beat and then played the 1 seed in a one point game well into the 3rd period. To me it will only be disappointing if Gene Smith doesn't do everything possible to keep Rholik.

You cant compare recruiting in the womens game to the mens game. Way more competition to get the better players. Ohio State doesnt have the history that Minnesota and Michigan have. Ohio State isnt going to out recruit either of them. Those teams reload while Ohio State has to rebuild at certain points. I expect them to make the Tournament each year Rohlik took over a mess and has made 4 regional and a Frozen Four. At some point getting to the tournament wont just be enough and next year might be that time. Lets see who comes back that is able to and this team should compete for the big prize.
