Ohio State 22-23 Are we Better Than You Think?

I also wouldnt say they got their asses kicked yesterday. It was a 2-1 game with a fluke goal to make it 3-1. They controlled that game from the 2nd period on just couldnt get that tieing goal. A bad 20 seconds cost them in the end.

I really hope Rohlik stays, but if he does, he needs to do a better job recruiting. We are not recruiting at the same level that Michigan and Minnesota are, which is why they are in the Frozen Four and we aren't. Yeah, it's great that we "overachieved" this season based on where we were picked, but we're Ohio State. All our programs, Men's Hockey included, should be competing for National Titles. We shouldn't be happy with one win over Harvard in the NCAA Tournament, then getting our asses kicked by Quinnipiac today with a Frozen Four berth on the line. It may be tough to keep Rohlik here. If I were him, I would definitely use the Wisconsin job as leverage to get more $$$ from OSU. If he does leave, we need to bring someone in who is committed to getting this program to the next level. There is no excuse for this program to be satisfied with these token appearances (and early exits) in the NCAA Tournament. Nadine Muzerall turned our Women's Program into a National Power in just a few seasons (4 Frozen Fours) and won it all in her 6th season (2022) with arguably the worst facility in the country. Rohlik has had 10 seasons and hasn't sniffed a National Title, other than the Frozen Four appearance in 2018, and even then, we got beat in the semi-final. I guess I just don't get why most are satisfied with us being an "also-ran" when it comes to NCAA Men's Hockey. I'll probably get jumped on for saying this (not by you klbaum1077, but maybe others), but "just getting there" doesn't do it for me. I want a championship. AD Gene Smith has always said, "We expect all our programs to compete for championships," so I am just following his lead, and I am pretty sure he means National Championships, not just conference championships, when he says that.

We need two things before we can ever hope to come close to recruiting like Minnesota or Michigan. We need a real arena, and we need the AD to demonstrate (not talk about) that it cares about men's hockey. I don't know what we can do regarding the former, but we can address the latter by doing whatever is necessary to keep Rohlik. If Gene Smith lets him go to Wisconsin without a fight then that speaks volumes as to whether the AD really cares about competing for men's hockey championships regardless of his rhetoric. If GS lets him walk away while the women get a new arena and the men are stuck in the Schott, who is going to take that job? I promise it won't be an improvement over Rohlik.

Even then Minnesota and Michigan will still have huge advantages over us and really the rest of college hockey. If you want to look at programs that are perennial underachievers, I'd look at those two rather than the Buckeyes.

I've seen the depths that this program can sink to. Anyone remember Markell squandering all that talent he brought in in the early 2000's. My God, Steckell and Umberger literally regressed every year they played for him. Then, when top recruits wanted no part of his program, we were a punching bag for a decade. Am I fully satisfied with where we are right now? No. It doesn't mean that I can't be happy with what they have achieved.

Bingo Markell brought the program from the dead to getting guys like Umberger and Steckell and then wasting them just the same. After that 05 season this was a doormat for 3 years and then again after 09 they stunk in 10. I thought Markell was allowed to stay 2 years to long.

This is exactly why I think he should stay where he is. He keeps OSU floating around 3rd with his talent and UW picks up a better coach and jumps OSU. I'd honestly like to see what Muzzy can do coaching the UW men's team.

What is the feeling on Mason Lohrei signing with Boston? Are they working out the details? Is he on the fence about leaving? Or is he leaning towards staying put in Columbus?

LOL, ok, I will admit it, you are my favorite Wisconsin poster, because you make me laugh when I have had a rough week of college hockey!

But no, you are not getting the Muzzinator to coach your men's team! (laugh emoji)

My thing is I don't understand how schools like RPI, Michigan Tech, Lake Superior State, and Union (just to name some schools that have won it all that don't have the resources OSU does, not trying to disrespect any of them) can win National Titles, but somehow Ohio State can't. Mrs 86 likes to remind me that her BGSU Falcons won a National Title in 1984 and we haven't. Everyone seems to be fine with our men's program being a second-tier program and never winning anything, so maybe I need to just temper my expectations and accept it.

The only one of those 4 that has won in recent history is Union, and the stars kinda aligned for them that year.

Winning National Championships is hard.
Really hard.

It's hard to be an OSU grad/fan and watch a program that should be way better than they are just continue to be a second-tier program when it comes to actually having a shot at winning National Titles in Men's Hockey.

The problem isn't with Rohlik. It's with Gene Smith. We have the lowest budget in the B1G and only B1G hockey budget not in the top 10. We play in a cavernous barn that's a terrible environment. The program gets kicked off their home ice in favor of high school games during the conference tournament, and the coach gets whacked for complaining about it. It's a miracle that any coach can come into this program and be competitive. Honestly, I wish Wiscy had made a push for Rohlik because it would have forced GS to either step up or publicly display his neglect for the hockey program.

What Muzz has accomplished on the women's side is a miracle, and not really replicable on the men's side for reasons that others have detailed. And I guarantee you that had she not won that NC and publicly called for a new arena, that GS would have let the women languish in the ice rink until the day he retired.

She’ll be the next coach of the Minnesota women’s team. She’s a Gopher alum, our fan base is incredibly impatient, and the U will throw a boat load of money at her.

Not sure since she's getting a new arena--The House That Muzz Built. There might be some desire to stay and really build her coaching legacy at Ohio State. Without that arena though, I'd fear that you would be correct. Also, you can't outspend us...even using the money that we generate for you! Your greatest hope would lie in our notoriously hockey-neglectful AD. Hopefully, he'll be gone before you come calling.

I could definitely see her deciding to stay. But I could also see the Gophers throwing a pile of money at her too. And with 30% of NCAA women’s players coming from MN, recruiting at MN is much easier too.

Rough Day losing both Dobes and Mason

Rebuild year unless Rohlik can pull some magic out of the portal. We simply don't recruit at the level to reload after losing our top players (see: 2021). I have faith, but in this conference, I won't be shocked if we take a step backwards for a year.

They are going to need to get a goalie for sure. I still like this roster and we know how this staff can coach but im with you this conference is better a step back is not out of the question

I would be curious to see if Rohlik was interviewed for the Wisconsin job. I didnt hear any rumblings on any of the sites I've read to this point.

My inkling, and it is just that, is that the Wisconsin AD was very mindful of access to the MN HS recruiting base. Rohlik brings in talent from all over, and thats not a bad thing. But I think in the end WI is close enough to that MN talent pool that it wants dorect access, which may have made them shy away, regardless of Rohlik being an alum.

To be honest Im not really concerned if he interviewed or not. It happened pretty fast and I think they got the guy they wanted. I really think they hit a home run with this hire. As you said he has that minnesota tie in for the recruits
