Ohio State 2024-25 Domination of the Portal Queen!

Ohio State opened their series against St. Thomas with a 5-1 win earlier today. St. Thomas opened the scoring in this one with a goal from Maddie Brown to take a 1-0 lead. That would be the only time the Tommies would lead in this one as the Buckeyes scored five unanswered goals to win this one 5-1. Joy Dunne would score the next two goals of the period to make the score 2-1 in favor of Ohio State at the first intermission. Ohio State's Jenna Buglioni would score a goal for Ohio State in the second period to make the score 3-1 at the second intermission. Ohio State got two more goals from Jocelyn Amos and Jordyn Petrie to make the final score 5-1. Ohio State outshot the Tommies 35-19 in this one with Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopping 18 of the 19 shots she faced in the win. Dani Strom started in net for the Tommies and stopped 30 of the 35 shots she faced. The two teams are back at it tomorrow at 2:00 pm EST.

St. Thomas only held the lead for 14 seconds. That's all the time it took for a Dunne Dangle, (patent pending) a stiff shot & a goal.

The Amos goal was a sweet give and go play with Kiara Zanon.

Random Reactions Department: Enjoyed the St. Thomas stream. Play-By-Play Guy Jake Griffith did a solid job. No color commentator was provided; Jake had to do his own homework & commentary. During live action, he put a lot of energy into calling Buckeye names as well as Tommie names. Which of course is appreciated by fans of the visiting team. Griffith has a good feel for the game, and a passion for it.

My only complaint with Jake is when a big play happened he would shout so loud into the mic it blasted the wife's and my ears. Perhaps a foam sleeve over his mike could mitigate that?

Ohio State needed to work overtime in today's game, but Emma Peschel lit the lamp for the Buckeyes in the extra frame and they escaped with a 1-0 win. Ohio State outshot St. Thomas 40-8 in this one. Buckeye netminder Hailey MacLeod stopped all 8 shots she faced to get the win. Dani Strom got the start for the Tommies and stopped 39 of the 40 shots she faced. St. Thomas will host Lindenwood next weekend with games on Thursday and Friday. Ohio State is off next weekend before hosting top-ranked Wisconsin on 11/15 - 11/16.

I was focusing on mostly on content. The positive energy was also much appreciated. That said, I must agree with your criticism.

My question would be: Wouldn't a foam sleeve muffle everything? Meaning it would damage the rest of his presentation? And also eliminate sounds from the competition itself, which can add value.

I've never run a sound system for any activity at any level. But I gotta believe that a sound technician with any experience at all would have ways of dealing with such blasting. Just don't know if that would mean a different microphone, a different mix on a sound board, or whatever.

A foam sleeve has several functions, the most common is when outdoors it helps filter wind and background noise.
Indoors it reduces harsh noises and a phenomenon known as plosive sounds. I applauded the young man's enthusiasm but the wife and myself both suffer from tinnitus and if we kept the TV turned down enough that the sudden shouting wouldn't bother us we wouldn't be able to hear him doing his normal commentary. Oh well, I should know it's not a perfect world.

Geez you guys are on the third page and it's UW week.....so tell me about your team. Who are on what lines and how much ice is the 4th line seeing?

I see Wheeler was getting a lot of A's for you, that's nice to see for her sake. She played a lot of minutes for UW but was never a huge assist player, but a very dependable 200' player.

That's a heck of a team you have this season, Timothy A. They are loaded, and they are skilled. That was on display tonight. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and ended up outshooting the Badgers 33-22. It didn't matter. Ultimately, Wisconsin was more skilled than Ohio State, and when given chances, buried those chances. The first period Ohio State goals were scored by Maddi Wheeler and Jenna Buglioni as Ohio State took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Undaunted, Wisconsin would get goals from Lacey Eden and Casey O'Brien to knot things up at 2-2 heading into the final intermission. Lacey Eden would get her second goal early in the third period to give Wisconsin a 3-2 lead. The Buckeyes had a number of chances, but could not get the equalizer. Caroline Harvey scored an empty net goal late in the game to make the final score 4-2. Wisconsin goaltender Ava McNaughton stopped 31 of the 33 shots she faced to get the win. Amanda Thiele started in net for the Buckeyes and stopped 18 of the 21 shots she faced in the loss. The two teams will wrap up their series tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST.

Badgers Keep Calm And Carry On

During the World War II years, the British Citizenry was advised to Keep Calm & Carry On. They did.

During the 1st Period of Friday's Game, Wisconsin faced considerable adversity from a Buckeye Blitz. They also needed to Keep Calm & Carry On. They did.

Early on, Badger Goalie Ava McNaughton moved to handle a puck. It seemed like the most routine of plays. Suddenly McNaughton lost both edges at once, and went down in a sprawling heap. It must have been a horrible moment. But somehow Ava had the presence of mind to nudge the puck toward the endline. She got just enough of the disc to prevent what would have been a tap-in goal.

A short while later, the Buckeyes found the target twice in 14 seconds to grab a 2-0 lead. As just noted, it easily could have been 3-0. A lesser team taking that kind of hit might have folded. But not the Veteran Badgers. Led by their seasoned Stars, Wisconsin slowly but surely climbed even in the 2nd Period, and won the game in the 3rd.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Wisconsin Honorable Mention: Caroline Harvey
Caroline's Empty Netter sealed the deal. Armed with the Extra Attacker, the Buckeyes attempted to penetrate the Badger Blue Line with a pass. Lacey Eden blocked that pass, and the puck caromed to Harvey. More on Lacey below.

Now the Badger they call KK wasn't especially close to center ice. Traditional wisdom says that you cross the red line before shooting at an empty net, thus eliminating the risk of being whistled for icing. In recent years, players have been increasingly willing to fire at an empty net from anywhere. Clearly Captain Harvey has the green light to "swing at the 3 and 0 pitch." Once the puck left her stick, the calm sniper left no doubt it was headed to the middle of the empty Buckeye net.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Joy Dunne & Jenna Buglioni
The always productive Dunne had the Primary Assist on both OSU tallies. The first was a fine centering pass to Maddie Wheeler. More on Maddie below.

On the second goal, Joy directed the puck to Jenna. Buglioni skillfully guided the biscuit through the five hole.

#3 Star: Maddie Wheeler, Ohio State
Wheeler took Dunne's centering pass and slammed the puck into the right side of the Badger net. Scoring a goal against her former team? Certainly a special moment for Maddie.

#2 Star: (tie) Laila Edwards, Wisconsin & Casey O'Brien, Wisconsin
Cleveland Heights Native Edwards had a pure hat trick of assists. To generate helpers, Laila offered a little bit of everything. There was the long breakout pass from the UW endline. She used her excellent reach to win a puck battle immediately after an offensive zone face-off. The 1st Line Left Wing is constantly creating.

And yeah, Wisconsin's top forward line is pretty freaking special. 1st Line Center Casey O'Brien more than carried her weight, contributing a goal and a primary assist.

#1 Star: Lacey Eden, Wisconsin
We're not forgetting the 1st Line Right Wing; we're just saving the best for last.

Cutting Right To The Chase: When Lacey scored the Badger's 1st Goal @ 4:49 of the 2nd Period, that was the turning point of the game. The Eden tally at 2:43 of the 3rd proved to be the GWG. The assist on the empty-netter completed a three point night. Not a bad evening's work for Friday's Difference-Maker.

Shocked to see only 3 lines on the line chart. Injuries or lack of players?

Ohio State only has ten forwards listed on their roster. Josie St Martin was missing yesterday; injured, I assume.

If fatigue from skating only three lines is going to show up, it would figure to show in the second game, less than 24 hours after the first game.

That was actually my biggest concern today ... whether or not we would have any legs in the third period, but the girls pulled it out. We may not have four lines of forwards this season, but our kids are fit. This was a great series, and I think the rankings are legit when it comes to both teams. I think Wisconsin is the best team in the country this season, but we are right there. I was proud of our team today, gutting it out against an extremely talented team like yours.

Yesterday I commented that Wisconsin was more skilled than our Buckeyes, and maybe that rubbed some people the wrong way. Those who know me know that I bleed Scarlet & Gray and love our Coaches and the girls. Today was another day and the Buckeyes showed that they are right there with the vaunted Badgers as they gutted out a 3-2 win to earn a split with the nation's top team this weekend. The game had a similar start to yesterday's as Ohio State jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Makenna Webster and Maddi Wheeler. The Badgers would answer on a goal from Kirsten Simms to send the teams to the first intermission with the Bucks up 2-1. Neither team could light the lamp in the middle frame. Kiara Zanon scored a big shorthanded goal in the third period to put Ohio State up 3-1. That goal would turn out to be the game-winner as the Badgers would get a goal a half-minute later on that same power play from Maggie Scannell to make the score 3-2. Wisconsin pulled goaltender Ava McNaughton for an extra attacker, but could not get the equalizer and the Buckeyes prevailed in this one. Ohio State outshot the Badgers 30-26 in this one. Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopped 24 of the 26 shots she faced to get the win. Ava McNaughton stopped 27 of the 30 shots she faced. Ohio State will travel to Mankato next weekend for a pair of games with Minnesota State. Wisconsin will return home to take on St. Thomas next weekend. This was a great series between two heavyweight programs. I don't have a crystal ball, but we'll see if maybe Kiara Zanon gets the #1 star from Mr. Pgb after this one! :)

I felt bad that our field hockey team missed out on the NCAA Tournament again this season, but it is sure nice to have Makenna Webster back with us full-time now. She is a special talent, and a joy to watch her play.

Buckeyes Win "Immunity Challenge" In Saturday's Episode of Survivor

The Badgers came to the OSU Ice Rink Saturday hoping to Vote The Buckeyes Off The Island. Didn't happen. The WCHA Tribal Council will have to wait. The valuable Saturday win keeps the regular season race alive.

Did either team Outwit the other? Not in my book. The Buckeyes & Badgers are both intelligent, well-coached teams. Did either Outplay the other? By slight margins, I'd say each team had the better of the play in the game they won. How about Outlast? Yes; but once again the verdict is split. Each team successfully defended a 3-2 lead to outlast the other.

Work ethic, strength, teamwork and talent were all on full display this weekend. Jeff Probst himself would have been impressed.

But are the Badgers the more talented team? I'm not signing on to that conclusion. There has been a bit of a to-do about the fact OSU has only been skating 9-10 forwards. But I don't think that's a huge concern when all 3 lines are getting a full helping of minutes. Now if we were giving a set of Top 6 Forwards almost all of the ice time, and limiting the rest of the forwards to spot duty, that would be a depth issue. But that's not what's happening here.

The Badgers do have a decided edge in terms of Fall Semester performance. No matter what OSU does after New Year's Day, UW has the inside track to the Regular Season WCHA Title. That's no small thing. But here's the deal. The Women's Hockey Sole Survivor will determined next March 23rd at Ridder Arena. We intend to be there to make our Closing Argument to the Hockey Jury. We anticipate that Wisconsin will also be there to state its case. We welcome the competition.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Wisconsin Honorable Mention: Laney Potter
Each team in this rivalry can claim depth. Potter is certainly a case in point. A full fledged member of the staunch UW Defense, Laney plays Right 'D' on the 2nd Pair. Potter's 3 Blocked Shots tied her with 1st Pair Defender Vivian Jungels. It was just one block behind 3rd Pair Defender Katie Kotlowski's team leading total of 4. Want to get a Shot on the Badger Goal? Six Badger Defenders are there to say you have to go through us first.

Offensively speaking, Laney plays on the 2nd Power Play Unit. In that capacity she had the secondary assist on the final goal of the game.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Makenna Webster & Sara Swiderski
Makenna opened the scoring; it was her turn to bag a goal against her former team. As it happended, Maddi Wheeler accomplished this feat on both Friday and Saturday.

If you look up the word "determined" in your Webster's, you'll find a photo of Makenna Webster. After receiving a pass from Jocelyn Amos, Makenna powered her way into the slot and willed the puck into the net.

We can't leave the OSU Defense off the list. This time we'll give Sara Swiderski the mention. Sara's 5 Blocked Shots led all players.

#3 Star: Maggie Scannell, Wisconsin
Four of the five Saturday goals came on special teams. Understandably the teams were eager to stay out of the box. But as we all know, infractions happen.

12:01 into the 3rd Period, the Ohio State bagged a thrilling short-handed goal. But a mere 33 seconds later, before the Buckeyes had any chance to feel good about themselves, we were right back to a one goal nail-biter.

The Badger's 2nd PP Unit converted. The puck squirted across the crease. Crashing the net from the left, Maggie rapped the puck up into the twine for the finish.

Note that the goal cage came off its moorings at the end of the play. OSU challenged the goal for that reason. Although it was close, it did appear that the puck was in prior to the net being dislodged.

#2 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
Jocelyn was the playmaker of the day, assisting on the 1st & 2nd Buckeye goals. Amos also played a key defensive role, covering the whole 200 feet. Her total of 4 blocked shots was second only to Swiderski's 5.

#1 Star: Kiara Zanon, Ohio State
osualum86 was all over this one! The moment the final horn sounded, I had Kiara picked out as my top Star. After all, Zanon had the shortie that proved to be the GWG. Taking a fine breakout pass from Joy Dunne, Kiara was so far behind the defense it was almost like a shootout attempt. Zanon calmly approached the net, deked, and found the five hole.

That was the difference-maker, but Zanon's offensive contributions went far beyond that one play. She came tantalizingly close to scoring several times before the breakaway. I remarked to the guy next to me that with a couple of bounces, Kiara could have had a hat trick. Naturally the Badger 'D' had a lot to do with cancelling out some of those chances. But even with the stiff resistance, Zanon got 5 shots through to the net, which led all players.

The 5th Shot was the charm.

Ohio State was unable to hold a late lead against Minnesota State earlier tonight and it cost them a point in the standings. The Buckeyes were able to get the game-winning goal in overtime to win 2-1 and get the second league point. Neither team could light the lamp in the first two frames and the Bucks and Mavericks went into the second intermission with a 0-0 tie. Jocelyn Amos opened the scoring for Ohio State and the score stayed at 1-0 until the Mavericks pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. Alexis Paddington was able to beat Buckeye netminder Hailey MacLeod to tie things at 1-1 and the game required an extra period. Not to be denied, Ohio State's Joy Dunne scored the game-winner halfway through the OT (2:29) to win it for the Buckeyes. Ohio State outshot Minnesota State 38-16 in this one with Buckeye netminder Hailey MacLeod stopping 15 of the 16 shots she faced to get the win. Hailey Hansen got the start in net for the Mavericks and stopped 36 of the 38 shots she faced. The two teams will wrap up this series tomorrow with game time at 3:00 pm EST.

It's nice that we're so effective 3x3. But... I know it's an obvious point, but there's no 3x3 OT in the post-season. Just something to keep in mind as the 2024-25 Buckeyes continue to hone their team skills.

...Alexis Paddington was able to beat Buckeye netminder Hailey MacLeod to tie things at 1-1 and the game required an extra period.
Paddington's Goal was tough to accept; all we could do was grin and Bear it. Fortunately the overtime adventure didn't turn out to be a trip to "Darkest Peru."

Not to be denied, Ohio State's Joy Dunne scored the game-winner halfway through the OT (2:29) to win it for the Buckeyes.
Dunne's Inside/Outside Moves are a Joy to behold. This time two Maverick Defenders and the Goalie were left mesmerized; the backhand finish was a tap-in.

So we have at least one overtime maven. Nice to have that ace in the hole when confronting a disciplined 5x5 defense. Full credit to Mankato; they certainly qualified for that description. Still, relying on overtime is a risky method of operation. Just saying.

Minnesota State scored three third-period goals earlier today to pull away in this one by a final score of 4-1. The Mavericks opened the scoring in the first period on a goal from Claire Vekich. Neither team could score in the second period. In the final frame, Minnesota State would get what turned out to be the game-winner from Taylor Otremba to make it 2-0. Maddi Wheeler would score for the Buckeyes to make it 2-1, but that was as close as Ohio State would get as Minnesota State got another goal from Otremba, then an empty-netter from Madison Mashuga to make the final score 4-1. The Bucks outshot Minnesota State 31-12 in this one but could not solve Hailey Hansen. Hansen stopped 30 of the 31 shots she faced to get the win. Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopped 8 of the 11 shots she faced in the loss. The Buckeyes have one more game on the schedule at Mercyhurst on Monday 12/2 before they break for the holidays. Minnesota State will travel to Dartmouth next weekend.
