Buckeyes Win "Immunity Challenge" In Saturday's Episode of Survivor
The Badgers came to the OSU Ice Rink Saturday hoping to
Vote The Buckeyes
Off The Island. Didn't happen. The WCHA
Tribal Council will have to wait. The valuable Saturday win keeps the regular season race alive.
Did either team
Outwit the other? Not in my book. The Buckeyes & Badgers are both intelligent, well-coached teams. Did either
Outplay the other? By slight margins, I'd say each team had the better of the play in the game they won. How about
Outlast? Yes; but once again the verdict is split. Each team successfully defended a 3-2 lead to outlast the other.
Work ethic, strength, teamwork and talent were all on full display this weekend.
Jeff Probst himself would have been impressed.
But are the Badgers the more talented team? I'm not signing on to that conclusion. There has been a bit of a to-do about the fact OSU has only been skating 9-10 forwards. But I don't think that's a huge concern when all 3 lines are getting a full helping of minutes. Now if we were giving a set of Top 6 Forwards almost all of the ice time, and limiting the rest of the forwards to spot duty, that would be a depth issue. But that's not what's happening here.
The Badgers do have a decided edge in terms of Fall Semester performance. No matter what OSU does after New Year's Day, UW has the inside track to the Regular Season WCHA Title. That's no small thing. But here's the deal. The Women's Hockey
Sole Survivor will determined next March 23rd at Ridder Arena. We intend to be there to make our
Closing Argument to the Hockey
Jury. We anticipate that Wisconsin will also be there to state its case. We welcome the competition.
Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun
Wisconsin Honorable Mention: Laney Potter
Each team in this rivalry can claim depth. Potter is certainly a case in point. A full fledged member of the staunch UW Defense, Laney plays Right 'D' on the 2nd Pair. Potter's 3 Blocked Shots tied her with 1st Pair Defender
Vivian Jungels. It was just one block behind 3rd Pair Defender
Katie Kotlowski's team leading total of 4. Want to get a Shot on the Badger Goal? Six Badger Defenders are there to say you have to go through us first.
Offensively speaking, Laney plays on the 2nd Power Play Unit. In that capacity she had the secondary assist on the final goal of the game.
Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Makenna Webster & Sara Swiderski
Makenna opened the scoring; it was her turn to bag a goal against her former team. As it happended,
Maddi Wheeler accomplished this feat on both Friday and Saturday.
If you look up the word "determined" in your Webster's, you'll find a photo of Makenna Webster. After receiving a pass from
Jocelyn Amos, Makenna powered her way into the slot and willed the puck into the net.
We can't leave the OSU Defense off the list. This time we'll give Sara Swiderski the mention. Sara's 5 Blocked Shots led all players.
#3 Star: Maggie Scannell, Wisconsin
Four of the five Saturday goals came on special teams. Understandably the teams were eager to stay out of the box. But as we all know, infractions happen.
12:01 into the 3rd Period, the Ohio State bagged a thrilling short-handed goal. But a mere 33 seconds later, before the Buckeyes had any chance to feel good about themselves, we were right back to a one goal nail-biter.
The Badger's 2nd PP Unit converted. The puck squirted across the crease. Crashing the net from the left, Maggie rapped the puck up into the twine for the finish.
Note that the goal cage came off its moorings at the end of the play. OSU challenged the goal for that reason. Although it was close, it did appear that the puck was in prior to the net being dislodged.
#2 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
Jocelyn was the playmaker of the day, assisting on the 1st & 2nd Buckeye goals. Amos also played a key defensive role, covering the whole 200 feet. Her total of 4 blocked shots was second only to Swiderski's 5.
#1 Star: Kiara Zanon, Ohio State
osualum86 was all over this one! The moment the final horn sounded, I had Kiara picked out as my top
Star. After all, Zanon had the shortie that proved to be the GWG. Taking a fine breakout pass from
Joy Dunne, Kiara was so far behind the defense it was almost like a shootout attempt. Zanon calmly approached the net, deked, and found the five hole.
That was the difference-maker, but Zanon's offensive contributions went far beyond that one play. She came tantalizingly close to scoring several times before the breakaway. I remarked to the guy next to me that with a couple of bounces, Kiara could have had a hat trick. Naturally the Badger 'D' had a lot to do with cancelling out some of those chances. But even with the stiff resistance, Zanon got 5 shots through to the net, which led all players.
The 5th Shot was the charm.
