Ohio State 2024-25 Domination of the Portal Queen!

Great bounce-back performance for the Buckeyes today. It's a shame they were not able to hang on and get the outright win, but after getting boat-raced Thursday, today's game was a welcome sight as we proved we can play with the top-ranked Badgers. Jordyn Petrie opened the scoring for Ohio State in this one just 49 seconds into the game to put the Buckeyes up 1-0. Wisconsin would answer with goals from Caroline Harvey (the box score says Caroline, and I don't feel like I know her well enough to refer to her as "KK" ... LOL) and Kirsten Simms to give the Badgers a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. The Buckeyes answered in the second period on a goal from Makenna Webster to send the teams to the second intermission tied at two. Joy Dunne lit the lamp for Ohio State early in the third period to put Ohio State up 3-2. Wisconsin's Kelly Gorbatenko would tie the game at three late in the third period on a beautiful tip-in goal and the teams went into overtime. Neither team could find the back of the net in the extra frame, so the game went into a shootout. Amanda Thiele stopped every Badger shot and Jenna Buglioni found the back of the net to give the Buckeyes the shootout win and the extra conference point. The Buckeyes outshot the Badgers in this one 39-34. Ava McNaughton got the start for Wisconsin and stopped 36 of the 39 shots she faced in game action. Amanda Thiele stopped 31 of the 34 shots she faced. Ohio State will return home to face Bemidji State next weekend. The Badgers will return home to face Minnesota State next weekend. Those games are Saturday and Sunday, and according to the Wisconsin athletic website, both games are sold out.

Heck of a game and win. The Badgers are so loaded this season you have to work your a** off for a win. Some say a shootout isn't a win but a win's a win. I think despite getting out butts kicked Thursday I feel we'll probably keep our #2 ranking.

Yeah the rodents pooped in their breezers against PSU, the #2 ranking for the 4th place WCHA continues.

I'm very late returning to the thread. But for the record, I did attend the Frozen Confines Event @ Wrigley Field. It was freezing cold, but we liked it! I'm proud of the strong Buckeye comeback that produced the shootout win over the Badgers.

The Tournament Hosts announced an Official Three Stars List:

#1 Star: Jenna Buglioni, Ohio State (GWG in the Shootout)

#2 Star: Ava McNaughton, Wisconsin (36 Saves; 6 Stops on 7 Shootout Attempts)

#3 Star: Amanda Thiele, Ohio State (31 Saves; 7 Stops on 7 Shootout Attempts)

Since I'm just now thawing out, I'll say "Me Too" to the Official List and leave it at that.

I might have been tempted to swap #2 & #3. But the organizers seemed to be operating under a formula of giving the First & Third Stars to the winning team, and the Second Star to the losing team. (or shootout losing team) A reasonable strategy for neutral site hosts. And for this game, it worked well enough.

The Buckeyes returned home and played a late afternoon game today. The times for both hockey games today were switched (women at 3:00, men at 5:00). I am guessing it was due to football being in the college football playoff tonight vs. Texas. The girls came out and took care of business in this one, beating the Bemidji State Beavers by a final score of 6-0. It took a while, but Maddi Wheeler scored late in the first period to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Jocelyn Amos scored two goals in the second period to send Ohio State into the final intermission with a 3-0 lead. Early in the third period, Jordyn Petrie scored to give the Buckeyes a 5-0 lead and broke up Jocelyn's bid for a natural hat trick (spoiler alert ... :D ). Jocelyn would get the next two goals to finish with four goals in this game as the Bucks cruised to a 6-0 win. Ohio State outshot the Beavers 44-16 with Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopping all 16 shots she faced in the win. Bemidji backstop Kaitlin Groess stopped 38 of the 44 shots she faced. The two teams will wrap up their series tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST.

Final Score From Friday, January 10th
Ohio State 6
Bemidji State 0

Focused Buckeyes Blank Bemidji

Yeah, it was a very special sports day at Ohio State. When Buckeye Football plays in a National Semi-Final, it's a pretty major distraction. As noted by osualum86, both OSU Hockey Games were moved to earlier time slots to accommodate The Football Frenzy. All 3 games went quite well, thank you very much.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: Shelby Breiland, Bemidji State
The Beavers didn't have a lot to cheer about. Amanda Thiele's Shutout made sure of that. But Shelby provided a bright spot in the Bemidji sky. The 4th Line Center won 5 of 9 draws in the face-off circle.

#3 Star: Jordyn Petrie, Ohio State
Awesome to see Jordan get a Birthday Goal! The post-game Happy Birthday Song? Also special. But when Petrie was conscripted for duty as a Birthday Pinball? Hmm. But all's well that ends well.

#2 Star: Mira Jungaker, Ohio State
Great to see Mira back on the ice after a prolonged injury absence. (She also played in Chicago at the Frozen Confines Game.) Jungaker seemed completely comfortable stepping into the role of Right Defense on the 1st Pair. Mira also had the Primary Assist on 2 of the Amo Goals. Jungaker? Ja!

#1 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
Not content with a Hat Trick, Jocelyn forged ahead to a Grand Slam! Her 4 Goals on 8 Shots led all players in both categories.

The story within the story is that Amos powered the Buckeye Power Play. As a team, Ohio State was 3 for 5 with the man advantage. Jocelyn put the finishing touch on all three tallies.

Next Stargazing: Rematch With Bemidji. Due To Friday's Early Start, I Can Say: "Same Buckeye Time; Same Buckeye Place."

The Buckeye Women finished the sweep of the Beavers with a 4-0 victory today. Captain Jenna Buglioni got the Buckeyes off to a 1-0 lead in the first period and Ohio State took that lead into the first intermission. Ohio State would get goals from Makenna Webster and Joy Dunne in the second frame to take a 3-0 lead into the final intermission. In the third period, Emily Zumwinkle got her first goal as a Buckeye to make the final score 4-0! That was great to see! The Bucks outshot the Beavers 44-14 in this one. Hailey MacLeod got the start in net for Ohio State and stopped all 14 shots she faced to get the win. Bemidji backstop Eva Filippova stopped 40 of the 44 shots she faced in the loss. Ohio State will travel to Duluth to take on the UMD Bulldogs next weekend. Bemidji will travel to St. Cloud for a series with the Huskies.

Final Score From Saturday, January 11th
Ohio State 4
Bemidji State 0

Special Teams Were Special

Nothing wrong with the 5x5 play. But the Buckeye Special Teams were remarkable, both on Saturday and for the Weekend as a whole. The Penalty Kill was perfect for the weekend; shutting down 3 PP opportunities on Friday & 2 PP chances on Saturday. The OSU Power Play was a symmetrical 3 for 5 on both dates. That's a 60% conversion rate, folks. For all intents and purposes, we got a best case scenario on both the PK and the PP.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Bemidji State Honorable Mention: (tie) Morgan Smith and Raeley Carney
Once again Bemidji enjoyed some success in the face-off circle. First Line Center Smith converted 8 of her 15 opportunities; 3rd Line Center Carney won 7 of 12. The Beavers kept competing throughout; and they certainly are tough up the middle.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: OSU Women's Hockey Fanbase
The sign on the South End Glass simply stated: "We Are A Women's Hockey School." So True. So Cool. Thank Goodness. Amen.

Thank you to every single fan who attended Saturday's Sellout.

#3 Star: (tie)Jenna Buglioni, Ohio State; Kiara Zanon, Ohio State and Jocelyn Amos; Ohio State
Naturally we open with a Power Play Goal. We might as well start with the tally that opened the scoring.

Face-off to the Beaver Goalie's left. Jenna on Left Wing. Kiara on Right Wing. Jocelyn taking the draw. Amos wins, directing the puck to Zanon. Quick release shot by Kiara proves to be a tough save for Eva Filippova. Fat rebound. Meanwhile, Buglioni is crashing the net. Good things happen when you go to the net. Jenna pounces on the rebound and slams it home. And the Buckeyes are off and running.

Perhaps the coaching staff drew up that play on the dry erase board. If so, good on them. But either way the three forwards executed it to perfection.

#2 Star: (tie) Hailey MacLeod, Ohio State and Amanda Thiele, Ohio State
Wait, What? Amanda didn't even play Saturday! Never mind that technicality. The point is that Hailey & Amanda teamed up to shut out Bemidji for the entire weekend. 14 Saturday Saves for MacLeod; 16 Friday Saves for Thiele. Perhaps the best of the 30 stops came when Hailey shut down a Beaver breakaway bid for a short-handed goal, thus preserving the perfect weekend.

Back-To-Back Blankings. That's tough to do.

#1 Star: Emily Zumwinkle, Ohio State
Emily scored her first goal as a Buckeye with a magnificent shot from the high slot. Yes, on the Power Play. The net-bulging blast was a wonder to behold.

The grapevine says that Zumwinkle's parents were in the house this weekend. Those two plane tickets certainly turned out to be a Best Buy.

Confidential To Lindsay: Will you attend on January 21st?

Next Stargazing: Can't Make To Duluth For The Admittedly Crucial Series With The Bulldogs. But Barring Another 36 Inches Of Snow, I Plan To Travel To Erie, PA For The Mercyhurst Rematch. Columbus-Based Fans Should Consider The Trip; It's Not A Bad Drive At All. I-71/I-271/I-90. Set your cruise control. Before you know it, you'll be watching the Buckeyes take on the Lakers!

Ohio State outshot UMD by a wide margin in tonight's game, but the Bulldogs got 58 saves from Eve Gascon to keep this one interesting until the very end as Ohio State took game 1 by a final score of 3-1. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 2-0 in the first ten minutes of the game on goals by Jocelyn Amos and Riley Brengman. Duluth got a goal from Caitlin Kraemer to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the first intermission. Neither team could find the back of the net in the middle frame. The score stayed that way until Ohio State got an empty net goal from Kiara Zanon to make the final score 3-1. Ohio State outshot the Bulldogs 61-20 in this one (yes, you read that right). UMD netminder Eve Gascon stopped 58 of the 60 shots she faced in this one. Buckeye backstop Amanda Thiele stopped 19 of the 20 shots she faced to get the win. The two teams will wrap up their season series tomorrow with game time at 4:00 pm EST.

The Buckeyes jumped out to a 2-0 in the first ten minutes of the game on goals by Jocelyn Amos and Riley Brengman...
What a game for Riley! The stiff top shelf blast on the GWG was top notch. But let's not forget that toward the end of the game, Brengman made a goalie-quality save with the upper body, then controlled the rebound, clearing the puck out of harm's way. She gave us nice, aggressive work on the PK as well. Great all-around effort from Riley.

Eve was quite brilliant, and obviously kept the 'dogs in the game. The UMD Broadcast team reported that the 58 saves were a personal best. Gascon is extremely tough to beat low. On the shorthanded breakaway attempt, she appeared to take away the entire goal line with a move that was simultaneously nimble and athletic. Gascon makes the Bulldogs dangerous -- against anyone.

Pretty incredible stat line on the shots. Now to see if they can get the road sweep today.

PGB I won’t be going over to Erie for Tuesdays game. My 2 kids have 9 sporting events this week and I’ll be in attendance at 5 of those! I am due to get to get to a Laker game, I try to attend at least one women’s game a year, whether it’s college or pro.

Safe travels and have fun if you go! Not sure the hours but the Student Union Building right across the quad from the rink now has a little pub downstairs, in case that’s of interest.

Who re-scheduled this thing for the day after the national championship game???!? Obscure stat: Lakers are are 1-0 on days they play after OSU football wins a National Championship. :-)

It would be a nice accomplishment and a big help in the standings. Go Bucks!

Totally understand that the kids come first. Thanks for responding,

Sounds appealing; do they have "pub grub?" If yes, do you have a recommendation?

Who re-scheduled this thing for the day after the national championship game???!?
I suppose the literal answer is the two coaching staffs. But yeah, the way it turned isn't ideal for those of us who hold both sports in the highest regard. Though I haven't checked, I presume that the two teams didn't have an open weekend in common after the break. If that's correct, a Tuesday match-up was highly likely.

Obscure stat: Lakers are are 1-0 on days they play after OSU football wins a National Championship. :-)
Presumably you were part of the Lakers' victory. Or maybe you're just a good historian. Either way, can you share more of the story?

Ohio State completed the sweep earlier today by a final score of 2-1 over the Bulldogs. Joy Dunne opened the scoring to put the Bucks on top 1-0. Later in the first period, UMD's Olivia Wallin scored to tie it at one heading into the first intermission. Ohio State's Makenna Webster scored early in the second period to put the Buckeyes on top, 2-1. Neither team could find the back of the net in the final frame, making the final score 2-1 in favor of the Buckeyes. Ohio State outshot Duluth by a wide margin in this one, 46-14. Eve Gascon was brilliant in net for the 'Dogs, stopping 44 of the 46 shots she faced. Amanda Thiele was great in net for Ohio State and stopped 13 of the 14 shots she faced to get the win. Ohio State will travel to Erie, PA, to take on Mercyhurst in a rare Tuesday game, then return home for a pair of games against Minnesota State next weekend. UMD will travel to St. Paul to take on St. Thomas next weekend in a Thursday / Friday series.

Ohio State completed the sweep earlier today by a final score of 2-1 over the Bulldogs.
There were many similarities between the two games.

EDIT: I forgot about the empty-netter in Game 1. The Edit corrects that error.

Joy Dunne opened the scoring to put the Bucks on top 1-0. Later in the first period, UMD's Olivia Wallin scored to tie it at one heading into the first intermission.
Want to score a goal in this match-up? Only snipers need apply. Joy & Olivia both qualify for that moniker.

The UMD Play-By-Play Guy thought that Dunne's rising shot beat Gascon under the arm; some refer to that as a 7 Hole Goal. The other possibility is that the puck went over Gascon's shoulder on its way to the upper left hand corner. Either way it was a smoking hot shot.

Ohio State's Makenna Webster scored early in the second period to put the Buckeyes on top, 2-1.
A bad Bulldog line change gave the Buckeyes a 2 on 1 rush, with Makenna carrying the puck. The current thinking is that in this situation, Job One for the defender is to take away the pass. The UMD defender certainly did that. While I'm not questioning the conventional wisdom, it sure felt good watching Webster charge to the net unbothered. And just maybe Gascon was guilty of leaning ever so slightly to her right, in anticipation of a cross slot pass. Be all that as it may, Makenna ruthlessly nailed the net to bag the GWG.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the final frame, making the final score 2-1 in favor of the Buckeyes.
Ohio State did a great job of protecting the lead and closing out the game. When the Buckeyes weren't controlling the puck, they were putting 200 feet between the Bulldogs and the OSU goal cage. UMD couldn't even pull their goalie until there was well under a minute to play. They never did get their timeout called.

We've seen this show before. But I'll happily watch the re-run as many times as the Buckeyes want to screen it!

Yes part of the victory. I was remembering watching the Ohio State game…and how I was stressing because I needed to get home because of curfew (for hockey). Of course the football game went to double OT.

That was the first season I was Ohio State fan adjacent….now watching them in a national championship game for the sixth time. This is one thing I like about sports, how it becomes a backdrop to the events of one’s life.

For tonight, go Buckeyes!

Looks like the pub I mentioned in the SUB is closed Tuesday’s. Here’s one more right next to campus for future visitors https://www.cornerstonebar.com

Cool & Of Course.

So true. I remember the 2002 experience in vivid detail. We weren't able to make it to Arizona. But along with another couple, we watched the game at the Arena Grand Movie Theater. (Near Nationwide Arena) Back in those days that was called watching on "Closed Circuit TV." There were actually two packed theaters screening the game.

That night was one of the first times we used a babysitter for our two year old. They had a child of roughly the same age. The kids got along, so it was great fit. It wound up being an ongoing relationship. Just a very special night on multiple levels.

For tonight, go Buckeyes!
We'll gladly accept your support whenever you're able to give it.

Thanks for the update! It would have been a disappointing moment to show up at the closed establishment. Will let you know if I make it to the Cornerstone this time.

Well I guess funneling the new ice rink money to the football team so they can have gold plated silverware paid off.

The Buckeyes traveled to Erie earlier today to take on Mercyhurst and came away with a 5-1 victory. Ohio State got first period goals from Joy Dunne and Jenna Buglioni to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Kiara Zanon opened the scoring in the second period to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead. Marielle Parks got the Lakers on the board later in the second period to cut Ohio State's lead to 3-1, but that was as close as Mercyhurst would get in this one. Jordyn Petrie scored to give the Buckeyes a 4-1 lead heading into the final intermission. Mira Jungaker scored the only goal of the third period to make the final score 5-1. Ohio State outshot Mercyhurst 53-16 in this one. Hailey MacLeod got the start in net for Ohio State and stopped 15 of the 16 shots she faced to get the win. Mercyhurst netminder Jorden Mattison stopped 48 of the 53 shots she faced. Ohio State will be home this weekend to take on Minnesota State. The Lakers will host Robert Morris this weekend.
