Ohio State 2024-25 Domination of the Portal Queen!

This is the chippies most bizarrely officiated women's hockey game I've ever seen! 😳
22 penalties?? Of course it was 11 and 11. Gotta keep it fair. I don't recall ever seeing Rew calling a game. If I recall correctly, Roth likes to listen to coaches in game a lot instead of ignoring them.

Ohio State took game two of their series at Minnesota to earn a split this weekend by a final score of 7-3. Wow, reading the box score, this was a parade to the penalty box. 21 penalties were called in this one ... 10 for Ohio State and 11 for the Gophers. Minnesota's Emma Conner lit the lamp first to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Ohio State's Sloane Matthews tied it at 1 early in the second period. Peyton Hemp scored for the Gophers to give them a 2-1 lead. Not to be outdone, Sloane Matthews got another goal for the Bucks to knot things up at 2. Peyton Hemp answered for Minnesota to give them a 3-2 lead. Sloane Matthews finished her hat trick to tie it at 3 heading into the final intermission. The Buckeyes would explode for four third period goals to pull away for a 7-3 win. The Ohio State goals were scored by Mira Jungaker, Jocelyn Amos, Emma Peschel, and Kiara Zanon. Ohio State outshot the Gophers in this one 42-33. Hailey MacLeod and Amanda Thiele combined to stop 30 of the 33 Gopher shots. Hannah Clark started in net for Minnesota and stopped 35 of the 42 shots she faced in the loss. Ohio State will return home to face St. Thomas next weekend. Minnesota will travel to Madison to take on the top-ranked Badgers.

If things go as expected, they'll play one another again in five weeks in the WCHA tournament.

(Do players ever get suspended for saying the 'magic word' to a ref? I assume that's what Abbey Murphy did to get her game misconduct.)

Sloane Matthews finished her natural hat trick to tie it at 3 heading into the final intermission.
While the Gophs didn't accomplish much else on Saturday, the Hemp goals did remove the natural label of the hat trick by Matthews.

Oh, so it has to be three in a row, period, not just three goals in a row for your own team. I'll go back and edit.

The Buckeyes took way too many undisciplined penalties in this series. It needs to be corrected going down the stretch.
Totally agree, we really played with fire this weekend, giving a talented offensive team like Minnesota that many power plays. Need to get that cleaned up going down the stretch.

Normally after a game like this one where we had to go into overtime to beat the 7th place team in the league, I might say something like, "The Buckeyes left a point on the table." That was not the case tonight. If anyone left points on the table, it was St. Thomas in this one as they capitalized on their scoring chances and led by two goals at three different points in the game, only to lose it in overtime. Give St. Thomas a lot of credit for going toe-to-toe with Ohio State and not blinking at any point in this one. I told a couple people before this game that St. Thomas had been playing much better as of late and that we would need to bring our game. Eventually, the Buckeyes did tie it up and win in overtime, but not before St. Thomas made the home crowd sweat it out! The Tommies opened the scoring on a goal from Lauren Stenslie to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. St. Thomas opened the second period scoring on a goal from Maddy Clough to take a 2-0 lead. The Bucks would answer on a goal from Jocelyn Amos to cut the lead to 2-1. Late in the second period, Chloe Boreen scored for St. Thomas to restore their two-goal lead at 3-1 as the teams headed into the second intermission. Ohio State got the first goal of the third period from Riley Brengman to cut the lead to 3-2. Once again, St. Thomas would go up by two goals when Keara Parker scored with 9:48 to go in the game. I gave St. Thomas credit for their performance tonight. Let's also give credit to the Bucks for never quitting in this one. Jenna Buglioni would get a short-handed goal to cut the lead to 4-3. With time winding down and Ohio State's net empty, Jocelyn Amos would score the tying goal with 29.6 seconds left in this one and the teams went into overtime. With a little more than a minute gone in the overtime period, Joy Dunne lit the lamp for Ohio State to give the Bucks a hard-fought 5-4 win and two points in the league standings. Ohio State outshot the Tommies in this one by a wide margin, 58-17. Dani Strom was brilliant in net for St. Thomas, stopping 53 of the 58 shots she faced. For the Buckeyes, Amanda Thiele and Genny Klein combined to stop 13 of the 17 shots they faced in the win. The two teams are back at it tomorrow with game time at 1:00 pm EST.

Final Score From Friday, February 7th
Ohio State 5
St. Thomas 4
(O.T.)

A Fateful Timeout & A Stirring Comeback

The valiant Tommies probably deserved a better fate. As well noted by osualum86, they held a two goal lead on three separate occasions. But with regulation time winding down, Buckeye Special Teams kicked into high gear.

With 5:41 left, a short-handed goal brought the Buckeyes back to within one. Still St. Thomas hung on. With about a minute and a half left, the Tommies called time out to organize their final defense. Reasonable enough. But it didn't yield the desired result.

I won't say the timeout backfired. But it did give the top OSU Extra Attacker Unit an invaluable minute's worth of rest. With 30 seconds left, the EA goal came through. That tying goal was not without controversy. The St. Thomas coaches challenged the play as being offside. After a lengthy review process, the goal stood. Next, remember that the Tommies had already spent their timeout. So the unsuccessful challenge resulted in a delay of game penalty.

St. Thomas did survive the last 30 seconds of regulation. But of course the balance of the penalty time carries over to the O.T. Under the current overtime rule, that gave Ohio State a 4x3 PP. Now the current group of Buckeyes are plenty lethal enough at 3x3. 4x3 seemed like an overwhelming advantage. That proved to be the case.

Note To Team: 3x3 play is pretty rare in the post-season. When the time comes, play accordingly. But that's enough looking ahead. For now, let's focus on this remarkable regular season contest.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

St. Thomas Honorable Mention: (tie) Ellah Hause and Dani Strom
The Tommies disrupted passing lanes and blocked shots all night long. Ellah led all players with 4 Blocks. As for Dani, with her 53 hard earned saves, she definitely deserved a better fate.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Riley Brengman and Genny Klein
Goalie Klein, on in relief, teed up the puck behind the OSU Net. Little did she know that would lead to a primary assist. Riley did the rest, launching a brilliant end-to-end rocket attack, complete with report. If you like that kind of thing, you could google Bobby Orr.

#3 Star: (tie) Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State; Jordan Baxter, Ohio State and Emma Peschel; Ohio State
The Extra Attacker Goal
: This trio of Buckeyes tied the game. Big shot by Emma from the high slot. Well positioned just above the crease, Jordon got her leg on the puck. From there, Baxter directed the disc to a wide open Amos. Outstanding leg-to-eye coordination? Could be. A deflection with a bit of puck luck? That also could be. Most likely a little of both.

In any event, Jocelyn received the puck cleanly and faced a wide-open net. Amo had the Ammo.

#2 Star: (tie) Maddy Clough, St. Thomas and Lauren Stenslie, St. Thomas
Maddie and Lauren were directly responsible for the Tommie's 2-0 lead. After they opened the scoring late in the 1st Period, they had the Buckeyes in chase mode for the rest of the game.

Clough executed a magnificent escape to create the opening scoring play. First she emerged from a scrum with the puck. Then she beat a Buckeye in a one-on-one puck battle. Finally Maddy left everyone in the dust, friend and foe alike. After receiving Clough's feed, Stenslie startled the home crowd with her well-placed shot.

Early in the 2nd, Maddy scored a goal of her own. Lauren assisted on the final St. Thomas tally. Clough & Stenslie were the only two Tommies with two point games.

#1 Star: (tie) Joy Dunne, Ohio State and Jenna Buglioni, Ohio State
The Short-Handed Goal
: The play began when a Sloane Matthews shot went wide of the net. Rebound to Buglioni. Dynamic Jenna-Joy-Jenna give and go. Tap-in goal for Buglioni.

The Ovetime 4x3 GWG: Another Buglioni Face-Off win. (61.3% for the game) Dunne and Kiara Zanon played catch as the Buckeye PP slowly squeezed down the Tommie PK. St. Thomas battled courageously; making an Alamo-quality stand. But when Joy got an A+ shooting opportunity, her blast was ruthless, emphatic and undeniable.

Dunne & Buglioni? Every Little Thing They Do is Magic. Magic, Magic, Magic. Ey yo, yo oh; Eee Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh. OH! IO!

It had to Sting from a St. Thomas perspective. But those were Rock Star Goals.

Pgb, thanks for the kind words on my write-up. Blame it on my journalism major at tOSU. It's kind of a shame that tOSU no longer has a school of journalism, but I digress!

I'll digress for a couple more sentences ... I am late with today's write-up because Mrs. 86 and I went to see one of our favorite local bands tonight. Major props to the good people of Planet 14 in Galion for having Hard Drive Band tonight! We rocked it out!

A great basketball coach at my high school (Wooster ... GO GENERALS) once told our guys following their first loss of the season after a 15-0 start, "Forget your mistakes, but remember what they taught you." The Buckeye Women certainly learned from the things they did wrong in Friday's game and finished the weekend sweep with a 5-1 win earlier today (yesterday for those who are not night owls like me). Ohio State opened the scoring on a Jocelyn Amos goal to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Makenna Webster would open the scoring in the second period on an absolutely wicked backhand to put the Buckeyes up 2-0. Sadie Lindsay answered for St. Thomas to cut the lead to 2-1. Ohio State would score the next three goals to make the score 5-1 and put it out of reach. The Ohio State goals were scored by Kiara Zanon, Joy Dunne, and Jenna Buglioni. The Bucks took that 5-1 lead into the final intermission. Neither team lit the lamp in the final frame. The Buckeyes really clamped down on D in this one, holding the Tommies to 7 shots on goal for the entire game while having 41 shots on goal one their side of the box score. Maggie Malecha got the start in net for St. Thomas and stopped 36 of the 41 shots she faced. Hailey MacLeod started in net for the Buckeyes and had a nice game, stopping 6 of the 7 shots she faced to get the win. I know the save percentage on that is .857, but most tenders will tell you it's tougher to stay focused when they are getting a minimal amount of shots. I like seeing Hailey get in there and thought she was solid in this one. The Buckeyes take the season series against St. Thomas with four wins and 10 of the 12 points (two of the wins were in OT). Ohio State has a bye week next week so they can hopefully rest up and heal any bumps and bruises before they close the regular season with St. Cloud for Senior Weekend on 2/21 - 2/22. St. Thomas will return home to host Bemidji State next weekend.

One more note, special thank you to Amanda Thiele, Hailey MacLeod, and Makenna Webster for taking pictures with us after the game! Today, a 'Skate with the Team' event was held after the game, and it was so nice to be able to mingle with the girls and congratulate them on the game and let them know how much we enjoy watching them play! I wish there were more opportunities for fans to interact with our team. I do completely understand that once the season gets going, Coach wants the girls to be laser-focused on the tasks at hand, I totally get it. Maybe in the future, before the seasons get started, there could be a 'Meet the Team' event or something. There are a number of fans who miss being able to talk to the girls after the games like we used to be able to do. Love this Team, really enjoy watching them play. They may not be as loaded as last year's team, but it has been fun watching the new players step in and contribute, and the team improving as the season has gone on.

Final Score From Saturday, February 8th
Ohio State 5
St. Thomas 1

Scoring First: Highly Recommended

Friday's game was a Titanic struggle, mostly because St. Thomas grabbed a 2-0 lead. Ohio State had to scramble to get back in the game. A number of errors were made while in scramble mode. Naturally that compounded the challenge. Frustrations? Yes; a few. As an example, one of the water bottles "took one for the team."

Saturday the skate was on the other foot. When the Buckeyes grabbed the 2-0 lead, it was the Tommies' turn to struggle. The Buckeye 'D' was calmer and much more effective. The Buckeye Offense confidently padded their shot total and built on the lead. Score first and a lot of things fall into place. Easier said than done, of course.

Bottom Line? The players responsible for those early goals dominate this edition of the Three Stars.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

St. Thomas Honorable Mention: (tie) Sadie Lindsay; Alli Pahl and Cara Sajevic
Yes, Ohio State greatly limited St. Thomas scoring chances. But St. Thomas did break through once. Goal: Sadie. First Assist: Alli. Second Assist: Cara. Time of the Goal: 8:48 of the 2nd Period. Even Strength.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Joy Dunne and Jenna Buglioni
Yesterday Joy and Jenna shared the #1 Star. Today I'm going to spread the wealth around, if only a little. Remember, my storyline focuses on the early goals. Hence the OSU Honorable Mention this time around. Still, the magic continued. The Dunne & Buglioni contributions were too good to ignore. Joy had a goal and two assists for a 3 point afternoon. Jenna was just behind, with a goal and one assist. Joy posted Goal #4 and Jenna bagged Goal #5; thus closing out the scoring.

#3 Star: Makenna Webster, Ohio State
Gotta make room for Makenna on this Stars List; she gave us the GWG. I won't try to improve on osualum86's call of The Absolutely Wicked Backhand. I will add that Webster always plays with sheer determination. Great to see that determination rewarded with the game's second goal.

#2 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
In perhaps the key moment, Jocelyn opened the scoring. It was pleasingly similar to Friday's Extra Attacker goal. Once again positioned to the right of the Visitors' goal cage, Amos received the puck from a teammate; a pass that gave her lots of net to shoot at. Once again, Jocelyn delivered.

#1 Star: Kiara Zanon, Ohio State
Kiara was directly responsible for the Buckeyes' 2-0 lead, contributing the Primary Assist on both tallies. That put the Tommies in chase mode for the rest of the game. 'Twas a mirror image of Friday's scenario. On the Amos goal, there was a loose puck in the slot. Although partially boxed out, Zanon extended her reach and executed a brilliant, sweeping pass to send the puck to Jocelyn. Kiara was also the puck source on Webster's GWG.

When it was Zanon's turn to find the twine, the pass came from Sara Swiderski. From there, Kiara headed straight down the slot. Her shot was slick and sweet, nailing the lower left hand corner of the net.

An argument can be made that the Zanon tally was actually the key moment of the game. Just two minutes earlier St. Thomas had scored, narrowing the gap to 2-1. But then Kiara reinstated the two goal lead, and order was restored.

Overall, Zanon had a three point night -- matching Dunne's total and besting all other players.

I'm embarrassed to say I didn't realize that. Yes, it is a shame. Having a comprehensive curriculum is usually how we roll.

Nicely put.

My observation is that there's been an effort across many sports to limit the general public's access to the athletes. A trend that's been many years in the making. I wouldn't say that the athletes are being "isolated." But it does seem to me that the access is now mostly under "controlled circumstances." Call it an abundance of caution. But I hope it's never forgotten that those brief, informal conversations are meaningful to the fans & players alike.
