Ohio State 2024-25 Domination of the Portal Queen!

You know I'm the last person to second guess coach but I felt if we went with Thiele both games we would have swept as I just don't see MacLeod being where she needs to be yet. The goal that tied the game came straight on from the blue line and the behind the net view on the replay seemed to show she wasn't screened. Should have been a very playable shot.
And why isn't Secreto getting any playing time? As a junior who's put her time in I have a hard time believing a freshman who's gotten playing time is more developed.

I'm confused. Who's the freshman you refer to? MacLeod is a junior transfer, who was pretty freaking good at Duluth. There is a freshman on the roster, Jenny Klein, but she appears to have not played any yet.

I'm referring to Klein. She got playing time against team Sweden and had been suiting up fairly regularly.
One would think Secreto would have been suited up the night they were honoring the National Championship team which she was part of.

But neither had gotten any ice time during the regular season. So I'm still not sure I understand the comment. Are you saying either should have played in the regular season over MacLeod or Thiele? Or are you talking about the Sweden trip? And if so, why?

A lot of action on Ohio State's part against Mercyhurst tonight but some not so good news. Halfway through the third period Zanon took a hard shot and went down hard by the boards. I couldn't get a clear view as it was down the ice from me and close to the boards. She was slow getting up and slow getting to the bench. She never returned and was off to the side with the trainer with her left arm dangling and holding her left shoulder in obvious great pain. She came out for the handshake line but the arm still dangling limp and in difficulty.

The Buckeyes had a rare weeknight game at the OSU Ice Rink earlier tonight and came away with a convincing 5-1 win over the Mercyhurst Lakers. The Buckeyes scored four of the first five goals and never looked back in this one. Jenna Buglioni and Jocelyn Amos scored goals for Ohio State and the teams went into the first intermission with the Bucks leading 2-0. Joy Dunne and Jordyn Petrie lit the lamp in period 2 to give Ohio State a 4-0 lead. Later in the middle frame, the Lakers got a goal from Thea Johansson to get the visitors on the board heading into the final intermission. Maddi Wheeler got a late goal for Ohio State to make the final score 5-1. The Bucks outshot the Lakers 47-15 in this one. Buckeye goaltenders Amanda Thiele and Genny Klein combined to stop 14 of the 15 shots they faced in the win. Laker netminders Magdalena Luggin and Jorden Mattison combined to stop 42 of the 47 shots they faced in the loss. The Buckeyes will host the Icebreaker Tournament this weekend. Ohio State will take on Stonehill Friday in the second semifinal. Should they win, they will take on the winner of the first semifinal between Cornell and Penn State. Mercyhurst will be off this weekend, then travel to Lindenwood on 11/1-11/2.

Buckeye goaltenders Amanda Thiele ...

I had only just brought up the video stream when Thiele left the ice, so maybe I missed something earlier. I went back a minute or two, but didn't see any 'big collision' etc. Maybe she was just sick? Anyone know?

Final Score From Tuesday, October 22nd
Ohio State 5
Mercyhurst 1
Ruby Tuesday

Tuesday Afternoon. But why be Moody or Blue? We had ourselves a rare Tuesday Hockey Night in Ohio. What a fine night to be wearing Scarlet & Gray. The Buckeyes gave us a gem. Dare I say it was a Ruby Tuesday? Who Could Hang a Name On It?

Full Disclosure: I'm compelled to go the Classic Rock route this time. You see I made a pilgrimage up to Cleveland last weekend for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Great show. We Turned Back Time With Cher leading the way. We felt like Peter Frampton. And when Kool & The Gang hit the stage, it was Celebration Time.

Anyhow, if you're ready to rock, here's what happened at the College Hockey version of Ruby Tuesday.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Mercyhurst Honorable Mention: Megan McKay
Megan didn't give us anything that leapt off the scoresheet; just good solid defense. I can point to one stat in support of my pick. Although the Lakers lost by 4 goals, McKay's +/- was even for the night. Megan's Mention is part of my ongoing effort to make sure good defense gets its due.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Riley Brengman & Maddie Wheeler
Riley didn't grab any scoring points either. But Brengman made major contributions at both ends of the ice. Her 4 Blocked Shots led all Buckeyes, and was matched by only 1 Laker. Her 7 SOG were matched by 1 Buckeye and no Lakers.

You want scoring, you say? You were undoubtedly pleased with Maddie's goal. The play began with tape-to-tape passes in the defensive zone, contributed by Sara Swiderski and Emma Peschel. From there it was all Wheeler. Free Wheeling her way across two full zones, Maddie roared into shooting position and nailed the Laker Net. Although Wheeler has plenty of experience scoring Division 1 goals, this one was her first as a Buckeye.

#3 Star: (tie) Thea Johansson, Mercyhurst; Mary Sweetapple, Mercyhurst & Vanessa Upson; Mercyhurst
Upfront, hats off to Upson for her team high 4 Blocks. On offense, Vanessa started the Mercyhurst scoring play with a pass to the high slot. From there, Mary Sweetapple's shot proved to be Delicious. At least Thea thought so. Johansson's rambunctious tip ramped up and into the Buckeye Net.

#2 Star: Jordyn Petrie, Ohio State
Lots of scoring skill on display tonight. But it was Jordyn's offensive prowess that took the initial 2-0 OSU lead and pushed the game over to the win column. A goal and an assist got the job done.

First, the assist. Jordyn intercepted a pass just inside the Buckeye Blue Line. For a tantalizing moment, it looked like Petrie would be quick enough to get through on a breakaway. Then the defense began to converge on Jordyn around the Laker Blue Line. But no problem. Sometimes you get by with a little help from your friends. Enter Joy Dunne. Jordyn persevered, and shoved the puck ahead to Joy. Dunne did go in unrestrained & unbothered; and found the twine.

Next, the goal. Crisp teammate passes held the puck in the offensive zone. Sara Swiderski & Brooke Disher made the passes leading directly to the goal. Receiving Swiderski's pass, Petrie cut across the slot from left to right. Finding an open shooting lane, Jordyn's blast went inside the right post, creating the 4-0 lead. The game was by no means over, The Laker goal was yet to come. But the lead did feel increasingly safe. That proved to be the case.

By my count, Petrie's 8th Goal of the Season ties Jenna Buglioni for the team lead.

#1 Star: Genny Klein, Ohio State
The Rock Band Foreigner has always been a mix of Americans & Brits. Kind of like D-1 Hockey Teams are usually a healthy mix of Americans, Canadians & Europeans. Freshman Klein came to us from Apple Valley, MN.

Anyhow, Genny entered the game early in the 2nd Period. If It Feels Like The First Time, it's because it WAS the first time she hit the ice representing Ohio State. And there she was, guarding the Buckeye Net. A Jukebox Hero, With Stars In Her Eyes. And she Came Alive Tonight! Klein had 13 Saves on 14 Laker Shots. Only Johansson's fine tip got through.

Genny Klein: The #1 Star Of Ruby Tuesday. Genny Rocks!

Up Next: The IceBreaker Tournament. The Semi-Finals Open With An Intriguing Penn State/Cornell Match-up; Followed By The Ohio State/Stonehill Clash. See You Noon Friday At The Schottenstein Center.

... Thiele left the ice... Maybe she was just sick? Anyone know?
One shot in ~ 24 minutes -- could have been sick of standing there. Given she left seconds after the score went to 3-0, it looks like an opportunity to play a backup. Either that, or pgb called down to the bench and said, "I've got an idea for my stars column, but I'll need an assist from the staff."

No.

With a faceoff about to happen at the other end of the ice, a trainer came out to Thiele, stood with her as she was doubled over in her crease for a full minute, and then ran along side her as Thiele skated to the bench. It was anything but a normal goalie change.

Made me smile! It'd be nice to have that kind of influence, but alas.

That's accurate. Speaking only for myself, I don't have the slightest idea if it was injury or illness.

I can add this: After being removed from the game, Amanda received some further attention at the bench. From there, she was fit enough to handle one of gates -- the way goalies not in the game often do. So I'm hopeful that whatever was going on wound up being less than serious. But no inside info.

When we OSU fans comment on forum on an injury it will only be a general observation on common knowledge of what everyone in the barn and on BTN+ saw for themselves.
If by chance we do know details it would be highly unethical for us to publicly post those details of a players injury so don't ask.

How is what I wrote different than what you wrote about Zanon going into the boards and hurting her shoulder? What I wrote was "common knowledge of what everyone in the barn saw", etc.

I sure hope Stonehill's goalie gets through the weekend unscathed. Their other girl is out with an injury and they don't have a third goalie on their roster.

Final Score From Friday, October 25th
Cornell 2
Penn State 0

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: Rose Dwyer, Cornell
Rose sealed the deal with her long range Empty Net Goal.

#3 Star: Tessa Janecke, Penn State
It's pretty clear that the talented Tessa is the focal point of the Nittany Lion attack. The 1st Line Center generated plenty of offense. Unfortunately for PSU, none of Janecke's efforts found the twine. But Tessa's 7 SOG easily led all players.

#2 Star: Annelies Bergmann, Cornell
A big reason why no Nittany Lion shots entered the net? The strong play by the Cornell Keeper. Penn State outshot Cornell 37-22, but Annalies stopped all 37. With the shutout, Bergmann earns the #2 Star.

#1 Star: (tie) Lily Delianedis, Cornell; and Ashley Messier, Cornell
Late in the first period, PSU attempted to break out of its defensive zone along the left wing boards. But Ashley's nifty pokecheck flipped the script. Lily pounced on the turnover, and zipped the puck past the startled Penn State Goalie. That goalie wasn't alone; a lot of us in the building were startled by the sudden change of events. There was still a lot of hockey left to be played. But the Delianedis breakthrough turned out to be the GWG.

Up Next: Day 2 Of The IceBreaker Tournament. Cornell Takes On Ohio State For The Championship. Penn State Battles Stonehill For 3rd Place.

They could burrow a page from the Mavericks' book and see if there is anyone on the tennis team with previous goaltending experience. Seriously, I see your point that it isn't easy to find a goalie just hanging around at a school that only has 2.5K students. Plan B is to check the current roster and see if anyone played goaltender earlier in her career.
