Ohio State 2024-25 Domination of the Portal Queen!

Looks like the Beavers scored twice against the Ohio State, including a short handed goal. This has to be unexpected. Will the Beavers become the pesky Beavers of the past again?

They were slightly more pesky than Lindenwoodhead. At least they didn’t give up double digit goals.

I missed {Saturday's UMD} game because I thought this weekend would be a safe weekend to get a cabin with some friends in Hockey Hills, or excuse me, Hocking Hills (I was thinking about the girls yesterday).
Love the "Hockey Hills" reference. I presume your weekend included a visit to "Old Fan's Cave."

It has been a long time, if ever, that women's hockey has started the season this early.
Earliest Ever.

I have to admit, it warmed my heart to hear our Captain tell me, "We missed you yesterday."
Good on you! Cool moment.

Armstrong for Bemidji is really good. She's going to score her share on breakaways. That's what happened on the shortie.

This has to be unexpected.
When you play conference games in September, nothing is truly unexpected. Speaking only for myself, I hope this season's schedule is an anomaly, as opposed to a harbinger of things to come.

Will the Beavers become the pesky Beavers of the past again?
After getting over their own early season jitters, Bemidji tightened up considerably in the second period. But it was already 5-0 at that point. Good question by you. Good response by the Beavers. But personally I'm not drawing any global conclusions from Friday night's game.

Ohio State took care of business this weekend at Bemidji, getting the sweep by scores of 8-2 and 3-0. In Friday's game, Ohio State jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. Makenna Webster opened the scoring for the Buckeyes two minutes into the game to put Ohio State up 1-0. Josie St. Martin, Kiara Zanon, and Jenna Buglioni would get the next three goals, followed by Webster's second goal of the period, as the Bucks went into the first intermission with a 5-0 lead. The Beavers tightened things up for the remainder of the game. Jocelyn Amos scored for Ohio State in the second period to put the Buckeyes up 6-0, but Bemidji came back with a shorthanded goal from Hailey Armstrong to make it 6-1. Ohio State's Jordyn Petrie got a power play goal later in the second period to make the score 7-1 heading into the final frame. Isa Goetll scored the second goal for the Beavers to make it 7-2, then Ohio State's Jordyn Petrie scored her second goal of the game to make the final score 8-2. Ohio State outshot Bemidji in this one 34-10. Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopped 8 of the 10 shots she faced to get the win. Bemidji backstop Josie Bothun stopped 26 of the 34 shots she faced in the loss.

Earlier today in the second game, the Buckeyes won by a final score of 3-0. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first period. Joy Dunne got Ohio State on the board first in the second period and Ohio State went into the second intermission with a 1-0 lead. The Buckeyes would get two more goals in the third period from Jordyn Petrie and Josie St. Martin to finish off the scoring. The Buckeyes outshot Bemidji in this one by a whopping margin, 55-15. Hailey MacLeod got the start in net for Ohio State and stopped all 15 shots she faced in the win. Kaitlin Groess got the start for the Beavers and stopped 52 of the 55 shots she faced.

Up next for Ohio State is a trip to Canton, NY, to take on St. Lawrence. The Beavers will also be on the road as they are at Robert Morris.

Love the "Hockey Hills" reference. I presume your weekend included a visit to "Old Fan's Cave."

We did not make it to Old Man's Cave. We went down to Nelsonville to Rocky Boot and also went up to the Antique Stores (Hocking Hills Antique Mall) right there on US 33 just south of Rockbridge.

In a battle of top ten teams, Ohio State earned a hard-fought 3-2 overtime win on the road at St. Lawrence. The Saints opened the scoring in this one on a goal from Sarah Thompson to give St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead. Ohio State got a goal from Jenna Buglioni later in the first period and the teams went into the first intermission tied 1-1. Abby Hustler gave St. Lawrence a 2-1 lead in the second period and it stayed that way heading into the second intermission. Jocelyn Amos tied it up for Ohio State in the third period. Neither team could get the game-winner in regulation, so extra time was needed, but only seven seconds. That is all the time that Ohio State's Jenna Buglioni needed to find the back of the net and give Ohio State a 3-2 OT win. Ohio State outshot the Saints 40-14 in this one. Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopped 12 of the 14 shots she faced to get the win. Saints goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordstrom stopped 37 of the 40 shots she faced in the loss. The two teams are back at it tomorrow with game time at 3:00 pm EST.

The Buckeyes completed the sweep of 8th-ranked St. Lawrence on the road earlier today by a final score of 5-3. Riley Brengman opened the scoring for Ohio State to give the Bucks a 1-0 lead. Taylor Lum answered for the Saints to tie things at 1-1. Ohio State got goals from Kiara Zanon and Joy Dunne to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. Give St. Lawrence credit for fighting back to tie things in the second period on goals from Aly McLeod and Sarah Marchand to send the teams into the final intermission with a 3-3 tie. Jenna Buglioni scored the game-winner for Ohio State at the 8:22 mark of the third period and Jocelyn Amos added an empty netter to make the final score 5-3. The Buckeyes outshot the Saints in this one, 39-21. Hailey MacLeod got the start in net for the Buckeyes and stopped 18 of the 21 shots she faced to get the win. Emma-Sofie Nordstrom stopped 34 of the 38 shots she faced for St. Lawrence. It gets tougher for Ohio State as they return home to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers next weekend. St. Lawrence will host Syracuse on Tuesday evening, then have a home series against Mercyhurst next weekend.

After opening the season with a couple of one-goal losses to Minnesota-Duluth, Ohio State has won five straight. Tonight's opponent was 2nd-ranked Minnesota and the Buckeyes won this one by a final score of 4-3. Joy Dunne opened the scoring to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead. Not to be outdone, Abbey Murphy scored on a breakaway to tie it at 1-1 for the Gophers. Later in the first period, Jocelyn Amos scored for Ohio State to give the Bucks a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission. Ohio State's Kiara Zanon scored the only goal of the second period to give the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead heading into the final intermission. Minnesota's Emma Kreisz scored early in the third period to cut Ohio State's lead to 3-2. Jenna Buglioni answered the give Ohio State a 4-2 lead and that turned out to be the game-winner as Minnesota would get a late goal from Gracie Graham to make the final score 4-3 in favor of Ohio State. The Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 27-25 in this one. Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopped 24 of the 27 shots she faced to get the win. Gopher goaltender Skylar Vetter stopped 21 of the 25 shots she faced. The win tonight was #200 for Buckeye Coach Nadine Muzerall! The two teams are back at it tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST.

Final Score From Friday, October 11th
Ohio State 4

Oktober Goal Fest; Buckeyes Prevail

Tons of determination on display tonight. Nothing came easily; but the producers gave us a fine harvest. Tonight was a night for goal scorers; every player with a goal to her credit gets a mention.

It's just October, but this is a nice win to have. The even better news is that we'll see these teams play 3-5 more times in the 2024-2025
Season.
Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Minnesota Honorable Mention: (tie) Gracie Graham & Emma Kreisz
Although they came up just short, the Gophers battled for the full 60 minutes. With the Extra Attacker, Gracie pulled Minnesota to within one goal with a nasty blast just under the crossbar. It was Graham's first goal as a Gopher. With only ten seconds remaining in regulation, the Gophs didn't really have an opportunity to come all the way back. But the Bucks needed every bushel of their production to prevail.

Earlier in the 3rd Period, Emma and Audrey Wethington converted a Buckeye turnover into a quick 2 on 0 breakaway. The Hungary Kreisz had the tap-in finish.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Jocelyn Amos & Kiara Zanon
Jocelyn tallied at the end of the 1st Period; Kiara light the lamp late in the 2nd. The two goal cushion put the Buckeyes in position for the win.

#3 Star: Emma Peschel, Ohio State
With this list teeming with forwards, I simply have to add one member of the 'D' Corps to the mix. Emma joins tonight's Stars with 2 Assists. Coupled with her sturdy defense, Peschel finished at +1 for the night.

#2 Star: Jenna Buglioni, Ohio State
All Jenna did was win the game. Her Insurance Goal proved to be an excellent investment; it matured into the GWG. With the PP clicking nicely, Maddie Wheeler fed Jocelyn Amos in the slot. Quick shot on net; save by Skylar Vetter. But Buglioni was on the doorstep, and pounded home the rebound -- thus restoring the Buckeye's 2 goal lead.

Should Jenna have gotten top honors? Possibly so. But the Murphy/Dunne match-up was rather compelling...

#1 Star: (tie) Joy Dunne, Ohio State & Abbey Murphy, Minnesota
The Line Charts designate both players as "RW." I've long understood that as a reference to "Right Wing." But apparently my understanding was wrong. Or at least incomplete. Clearly RW refers to "Registered Weapon."

Both players are supremely talented. Both are physical forces; extremely strongly on the puck. Both have compete levels that are off the charts.

Joy opened the scoring by dangling across the slot from right to left, then rifling a shot into the right side of the Gopher net.

Ella Huber's long stretch pass sprung Abbey on a breakaway. Murphy made no mistake on the finish. Oh, and did I mention that Abbey now moonlights as a Quality Control Expert for plexiglass manufacturing? The two-handed lumberjack chop she delivered to the OSU Plexiglass would have sent Paul Bunyan scurrying for cover.

Message Delivered: Game On. BTW, the plexiglass held up just fine.

Confidential To All Of The Buckeye Hockey Alums In Attendance: Is was great to have you guys back in the house. I know the current players appreciated your raucous support. And the coaching staff no doubt enjoyed the London Bridge treatment.

Up Next: Joy vs Abbey; Round Two. Buckeyes vs. Gophers; The Same. See You At The Ice Rink Saturday Afternoon At Three. Go Bucks!

Ohio State had to work hard for the win against Minnesota as right from the drop of the puck the Gophers player with a take no prisoners attitude and initially had the Buckeyes on their heels.
We slowly rebounded and eventually got our rhythm and controlled the second period. When Minnesota scored with their goalie pulled to only be down by one we were very fortunate there was only nine secondary left in the game otherwise Minnesota would have made a strong push to do it again and tie the game. It was quite the Barn Burner!

Very true. IIRC, the Gophers had the first 5 SOG.

Also agree with this assessment. Momentum did ebb and flow as you describe.

A year ago in Columbus in Game 2, UM putting the Buckeyes on their heels produced a 2-0 lead after a period. Now, the Gophs can only muster a good five minutes. Either the visitors have a mental block where your team is concerned, or more likely, the gap between the two teams hasn't narrowed all that much.

I felt the Gopher's player much more competitively against us this weekend than they did last season.

The two teams played for 65 minutes today and ended up tied at 1-1. The Buckeyes prevailed in the shootout to get the extra point in the WCHA standings. Jordyn Petrie opened the scoring in this one and Ohio State led 1-0 at the first intermission. Neither team could light the lamp in the second period, so the teams went into the final frame with Ohio State clinging to a 1-0 lead. Minnesota's Josefin Bouveng scored early in the third period to tie things up. Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of regulation and the overtime period, so it went to a shootout where Ohio State was able to outlast Minnesota on goals from Joy Dunne and Jocelyn Amos. Abbey Murphy scored a shootout goal for the Gophers. Ohio State outshot the Gophers in this one, 30-29. Amanda Thiele stopped 28 of the 29 shots she faced for the Buckeyes. Hannah Clark got the start in net for the Gophers and stopped 29 of the 30 shots she faced. Ohio State will travel to St. Cloud next weekend for a series against the Huskies. The Gophers return home to host top-ranked Wisconsin.

Final Score From Saturday, October 12th
Ohio State 1
Minnesota 1

Defenses Step Up; Shootout Win Gives Buckeyes 5 of 6 Points On The Weekend
After Friday's game, forwards got every Star, save one. Perhaps it's fitting that I'm flipping the script for the rematch. This time all of the mentions are on the defensive side of the ledger, save one. The defenses really stepped up.

Of course I'm not telling the whole story. Lots of fine plays were made by back-checking forwards. Lots of plays. But rather than try to ferret out the best of those, I'm content to spread the wealth to the 'D' this time.

Also, in recognition of the tie game, you'll see a very balanced slate among the top 3 Stars.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Very Honorable Mention: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
Here's your Forward for this Edition of the Three Stars. OK, it was "just" a shootout goal. But Jocelyn's conversion was calm, clinical and fully effective. After 5 1/2 rounds of shootout stalemate, and almost 3 hours of hockey action, Amos sent the Buckeye Faithful home happy.

#3 Star: (tie) Chloe Primerano, Minnesota & Nelli Laitinen, Minnesota
The Gophers held the powerful Buckeyes to just one goal. Players up and down the U of M line-up deserve kudos. I'll let the starting 'D' pair represent the full group.

Chloe is a brand new Gopher. It's easy to see why Minnesota fans are high on their rookie defender. She's quick and strong, and often the player who settles down the chaos. Primerano's reputation preceded her; it was a pleasure to see her play for the first time.

Nelli Laitinen brings a veteran presence to the pairing. As a pair they look really solid together. FWIW, they weren't on the ice for the Buckeye goal. Nelli contributed two blocks to the Gopher cause; and the total may have been higher than the scoresheet indicates.

#2 Star: (tie) Sara Swiderski, Ohio State & Emma Peschel, Ohio State
Sara was a surprise starter. Or maybe I should say her selection caught me a little off guard. But Swiderski put up very stiff resistance against all comers.

Peschel, the other Buckeye starter on 'D,' has been a Buckeye mainstay for some time. She got a Star Friday for offensive contributions; Saturday's game generated the defensive honors. Emma unflinchingly blocked two shots, as did her counterpart Sara.

#1 Star: (tie) Amanda Thiele, Ohio State & Hannah Clark, Minnesota
Hannah is another new Gopher, migrating from Oshawa, Ontario to Minneapolis. Hey, wait a minute. Didn't a certain Bobby Orr play for the Oshawa Generals? Never mind; that was then, this is now. Anyhow, Clark looked pretty seasoned for a rookie in her second game. 29 Saves on 30 Buckeye Shots is a very solid performance.

Now for the Buckeye Netminder. Amanda looked like a seasoned veteran because she IS a seasoned veteran! For the 65 Minutes, Thiele posted strikingly similar numbers to Hannah -- 28 Saves on 29 Gopher shots.

Today belonged to the Goalies. Including the Shootout. True, Murphy, Dunne & Amos converted impressively. But if anything, the other 9 shooters looked a little over matched.

I have no idea how the Gophers will split the netminding duties as they move forward. But Hannah Clark made a good first impression in Columbus.

Confidential To Jenna B:
Thank you for the Greatest Diving Signal I've ever seen. Ref, Player or Fan -- You're #1. And because your call was spot on, no Oscar for Abbey.

Confidential To Hannah B:
Your officiating didn't escape my notice either. From your perch in the South Stands, your arm went up right on time. And it was a Good Call!

Up Next: Road Trip To St. Cloud State

Ohio State took the opener earlier tonight at 11th-ranked St. Cloud by a final score of 5-1. The Buckeyes opened the scoring with two quick goals from Joy Dunne and Jordyn Petrie to take a 2-0 lead. The Huskies got a power play goal from Grace Wolfe to cut the lead to 2-1. That was as close as St. Cloud would get in this one as the teams went into the first intermission. Joy Dunne would get a power play goal for Ohio State in the second period and the teams would head into the final intermission with the Bucks leading 3-1. Jenna Buglioni scored a shorthanded goal in the third period to give the Buckeyes a 4-1 lead and Jordyn Petrie would get her second goal of the game to make the final score 5-1. Ohio State dominated the shots on goal in this one, 47-10. Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopped 9 of the 10 shots she faced in the win. Sanni Ahola stopped 42 of the 47 shots she faced. The teams will wrap up their series tomorrow at 2:00 pm EST. The Bucks were without two-sport star Makenna Webster in this one. Webster was busy scoring the game-winner for Ohio State's Field Hockey team in their 2-1 win at Maryland.

Ohio State and St. Cloud skated to a 3-3 tie after 65 minutes, then the Huskies got the extra point in the shootout. This one couldn't have made Coach happy as the Buckeyes committed nine penalties, two of which were a five-minute major and a game misconduct. St. Cloud made the Buckeyes pay dearly for their transgressions as one of the penalties led to St. Cloud's tying goal late in the third period. Things started off well for the Buckeyes as Jocelyn Amos scored the only goal of the first period to send Ohio State into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. Jordan Baxter added a goal in the second period to put Ohio State up 2-0. The Huskies clawed back with two second period goals of their own from Brieja Parent and Abby Promersberger to knot things at 2-2 heading into the second intermission. Ohio State's Jenna Buglioni, and that is a hard G sound (confidential to the St. Cloud play-by-play guy), not a soft G sound. It was like nails on the chalkboard hearing the guy say "Bujlioni" all weekend. She has been here five seasons, so there is no excuse for someone to not know how to pronounce her name by now. Then again, Leah Hextall butchered her name earlier this year in the Frozen Four, so the St. Cloud guy is in good company, but I digress. Where was I? Ah yes, Captain Jenna scored a goal late in the third period to put Ohio State up 3-2, but it wouldn't last because the Buckeyes committed a penalty and gave up a power play goal with a minute left in the game to allow St. Cloud to tie it at 3-3 and force overtime. Dayle Ross scored that tying goal for the Huskies. Neither team could light the lamp in the extra period although Ohio State did commit yet another penalty in the overtime period to give St. Cloud a 4-on-3 for a couple minutes. Sofianna Sundelin scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Huskies the extra point in the standings. If the Julianne Bye Cup ends up somewhere other than Columbus after this season, this program will look back on games like this and wish they would have finished these games the right way. Ohio State left two points on the table today, and it may come back to haunt them. Time will tell. Thankfully, the Buckeyes have a rare weeknight game in a few days so they can get the bad taste of this one out of their mouths. I fully expect to see a focused, pissed-off team Tuesday night against Mercyhurst. The Buckeyes outshot the Huskies 48-19 in this one. Hailey MacLeod got the start in net for the Buckeyes and stopped 16 of the 19 shots she faced. Emilia Kyrkko started in net for St. Cloud and stopped 45 of the 48 shots she faced. As I said earlier, the Buckeyes have a Tuesday night game against Mercyhurst, then will host the 2024 Women's Icebreaker Tournament next weekend. The Buckeyes will play Stonehill Friday. Should they win that game, they will take on the winner of the other semi-final between Cornell and Penn State. St. Cloud will take on St. Thomas next weekend in a home-and-home. The Huskies will travel to St. Thomas for the Friday evening game, then return home to host the Saturday afternoon contest.

This weekend, Mercyhurst played a pretty talented #6 Cornell team to a scoreless tie, and then beat them 2-1. The Buckeyes could have a game on their hands...
