Ohio State 2024-25 Domination of the Portal Queen!

I sure hope Stonehill's goalie gets through the weekend unscathed. Their other girl is out with an injury and they don't have a third goalie on their roster.

Mrs. 86 was watching the game (I was working) and told me that they did not pull the goalie. Now I understand why. Poor kid had to deal with all 11 of those goals.

As others have alluded to, it was all Ohio State in the second game of the IceBreaker Tournament as they defeated Stonehill 11-0. Before I get into the scoring, which will require a box score on this day (not going to be able to remember all 11 without having to look at the box score a couple times), I want to give a shout out and congratulations to Buckeye netminder Lexi Secreto for getting the start today and the shutout win! Lexi only had to stop 9 shots today, but I will get into the shots on goal stats later. Ohio State opened the game with three first period goals from Sloane Matthews, Joy Dunne, and Josie St. Martin to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. The Bucks got two goals in the second period from Josie St. Martin and Jocelyn Amos to take a 5-0 lead into the final intermission. The Buckeyes then exploded for six more goals in the third period to make the final score 11-0. The third period goals were scored by Sara Swiderski, Maddi Wheeler, Joy Dunne, Emma Peschel (2), and Jenna Buglioni. The shots on goal stats were dominated by Ohio State, 72-9. Lexi Secreto stopped all 9 shots she faced in the win. Alexsa Caron got the start in net for Stonehill and stopped 61 of the 72 shots she faced.

Ohio State will face the Cornell Big Red in the championship game of the IceBreaker Tournament tomorrow at 4:00 pm EST. Cornell defeated Penn State in the first semifinal, 2-0 on goals from Lily Delianedis and Rose Dwyer. Big Red backstop Annelies Bergmann stopped all 37 shots she faced to get the win for the Big Red.

Because your an annoying sh1t stirrer

As I said in the first post, I turned on the video early in the second period, just before Thiele left the ice. So I asked if there had been anything earlier, before I started watching, that would explain her leaving the ice. If asking such a question offends you so... well, you'll have to get used to it.

I see that Thiele didn't play today, and MacLeod wasn't even listed in the line chart. I'll be interested to see who plays tomorrow, when the opponent is of a much higher caliber than today.

We read your first post - and your a sh1t stirrer. So follow it up with another stir.

For those who watch Apple TV - you are the Roddy Ho from Slow Hoses. Big Mouth with a keyboard but loser in reality.

For those who watch Shoresy on Hulu… your the inspiration for all his mother jokes.

Thiele didn’t play and Macleod didn’t dress… brilliant statement… the ice was cold… the lights were on. Any other of your stupidity I need to get used to?

Dartmouth only had one goalie last year. She played with 2 blockers on because of a hand injury.

The back up was thrown off the team and the third goalie stopped playing. They found a lacrosse goalie and suited her up for back ups and practice

Goalie is a tough position

Here's the thing: I don't take insult from random anonymous people on the internet. So if you're trying to get a rise out of me, you're really unlikely to succeed.

(I saw a guy at a Wisconsin men's game last year (?) wearing a Shoresy jersey. Letterkenny Irish, of course. LOL)

Sierra sure has your number when he posts! :p

I'll grant that to an extent that's true. But he's not coming out keyboard blazing, just looking to try to get a rise out of me, like whoever this is (the account wae only created five days ago, and there have been like six posts, half directed at me). With Sierra, it's more "in context", and so less random, and certainly less anonymous.

None of you ever did answer my question, though: did I miss anything in the first period, etc, that would help explain Thiele's odd exit?

Glad to see that Zanon is apparently OK.

Final Score From Friday, October 25th
Ohio State 11
Stonehill 0

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (Tie) Lexington Secreto, Ohio State; and Alexa Caron, Stonehill
Have to give a Mention to both goalies; though for quite different reasons. For Secreto, it was great to see Lexi post the Shutout. But I just couldn't elevate her to the Numbered Stars List with only 8 Saves. She wasn't seriously challenged. Still, perfect is perfect.

Stonehill's best scoring chance came on a Penalty Shot. Secreto stood tall & unflinching, giving the Skyhawk nothing to shoot at. I'd say that's worth a mention as well!

As for Caron, she played with great courage and made many quality saves. No goalie should have to face 72 shots in a single game; but that was Alexa's unenviable task. Eventually the relentless barrage broke through, and the score got out of hand in third period. But Caron made the Buckeyes work hard for their results; particularly in the first two periods.

#3 Star: Joy Dunne, Ohio State
Parsing through the avalanche of offensive stats, I decided that my Three Stars would be the players who posted a total of 4 scoring points on the night. Thus leading all scorers. As it happens, the same group of three each scored one of the 1st Period goals. With those three tallies, the Buckeyes took control of the game and never let go.

We start with Joy. Dunne loves to arc across the high slot with the puck, carefully assessing the opportunities to shoot or pass. The "Dunne Dangle" was on full display in this one. And yeah, she availed herself of many of the opportunities she created. Joy finished with a mind-numbing 11 SOG. I don't mean to pile on, but I can't help but notice that Dunne outshot the Stonehill TEAM by a margin of 11-8. The best part is that 2 of those 11 shots found the mark.

Ultimately Joy was +4 for the contest.

#2 Star: Sloane Matthews, Ohio State
Sloane grabbed her 4 points with 1 goal and 3 assists. Importantly, the Matthews Goal broke the ice at 5:40 of the 1st Period. That seems especially meaningful in an IceBreaker Tournament!

Ultimately Sloane was +5 for the contest, allowing her to get past Joy for the second spot.

#1 Star: Josie St. Martin, Ohio State
Freshman Josie St. Martin comes to us from Stillwater, MN. We're glad she chose us. I'm pleased to award #9 the #1 Star. Here's to hoping it's the first of many!

In a crowded field of worthy candidates, it was tough for anyone to gain separation. Here's how St. Martin did it. She had the requisite 4 points, like the other Stars. But her 2 goal production was a notch better than Sloane's single tally.

Ultimately Josie was +5 for the contest, one better than Joy.

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall -- Who's the Brightest Star of all? Josie St. Martin!

Up Next: Day 2 Of The IceBreaker Tournament. Ohio State Takes On Cornell For The Championship. Stonehill Battles Penn State For 3rd Place.

On something of actual relevance, is the attendance listed in the USCHO box correct? I was hoping for a big turnout to add some weight to the cause of getting the much deserved rink build. Do you think the time or location hurt? I don't know how OSU students feel about hockey but hopefully the turnout is good tonight for championship game.

I don’t take insult???? You mean insults - plural

You don’t make sentence…lol

Yes this a new account - I forgot my old one because it’s been a while. Let’s not worry about the identity of who posts or the number of posts but the content of what they post. So that being said go have fun in your Badger room and when you come here to stir the pot you WILL get called out. Glad to know I’m living rent free in your head. I’m not trying to get a rise out of you - just trying to make you a better person.

The timing of it, a weekday afternoon game and coinciding with a big home football game Saturday in my mind were definitely factors affecting attendance. It was also a disappointment that only one concession stand was open limiting the food options.
We'll see how it goes today but many might be turned off knowing how difficult it is dealing with football traffic.

An angry elf.....

Ohio State won the IceBreaker Tournament today with a 7-3 win over Cornell. Before I get into that, congratulations to Penn State for defeating Stonehill in the third place game 11-1! The Buckeyes opened the scoring with two goals from Sloane Matthews and Kiara Zanon to take a 2-0 lead. Not to be outdone, the Big Red came back with a goal from Katie Chan to cut the Buckeye lead to 2-1. Late in the first period, with a fraction of a second left to be exact (.6), Joy Dunne lit the lamp for the Bucks to give them a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission. Jenna Buglioni scored in the second period to put Ohio State up 4-1. Cornell came roaring back with two goals from Avi Adam and Karel Prefontaine to cut Ohio State's lead to 4-3. That would be as close as the Big Red would get as Jocelyn Amos scored a shorthanded goal to give Ohio State a 5-3 lead heading into the final intermission. Brooke Disher scored in the third period to give Ohio State a 6-3 lead and Jocelyn Amos scored her second goal of the afternoon to make the final score 7-3. The Bucks outshot Cornell in this one, 25-15. Amanda Thiele got the start in net for Ohio State and stopped 12 of the 15 shots she faced in the win. Cornell netminder Annelies Bergmann stopped 18 of the 25 shots she faced in the loss. Ohio State will get back to league play next weekend with a pair of games at St. Thomas. Cornell will return home to host Union and RPI next weekend at the legendary Lynah Rink!

I was a fun game to watch today against Cornell. Ohio State was in control of the game but there were a few mistakes made that cost us 3 goals for Cornell. Got to clean those up.

Final Score From Saturday, October 26th
Penn State 11
Stonehill 1
Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (tie) Maeve Connolly, Stonehill; & The Entire Penn State Team
Maeve transferred to her current team from Penn State. Evidently her former teammates got wind of the fact that Connolly was in the starting line-up for the Skyhawks. When Maeve's name was announced as a starter, The Nittany Lions assembled on the endline gave her a unified cheer. The classy salute speaks very well of the Penn State program.

#3 Star: (tie) Mia Kenmore, Stonehill; Briana Walkom, Stonehill; and Sydney Russell, Stonehill
Stonehill's efforts were finally rewarded with a goal at 7:46 of the 2nd Period. Sydney began the play by blocking a stiff shot in the defensive zone. Briana garnered the puck and sent a head man pass to Mia. Breakaway and Goal for Kenmore. I was happy the Skyhawks got a great moment to remember while at the tournament.

#2 Star: (tie) Brianna Brooks, Penn State; & Tessa Janecke, Penn State
We'll let the top two Nittany Lion Centers share the 2nd Star. Both had 3 point games. Both had positive winning percentages in the face-off circle.

Brooks had a pair of Goals and an Assist. A little detail on the second tally. McKenna Walsh won a puck battle along the right wing boards, and sent the disc down low. Below the endline, Grace Outwater made a fine centering pass. Brianna arrived right on time to pound home a one-timer.

Janecke served as the Playmaker Du Jour; earning a Hat Trick of Assists. Perhaps the highlight was Tessa's lob pass to Katelyn Roberts, which ultimately matured into Karolina Hengelmuller's goal.

#1 Star: Grace Outwater; Penn State
14 of the 18 Nittany Lion Skaters had a scoring point. Most impressive. But Freshman Grace Outwater stood head and shoulders above the rest. Grace had a Hat Trick plus 2 Assists for a 5 Point Game. Importantly Outwater had the first two goals of the contest, launching Penn State on its successful effort.

Congratulations to Penn State for Winning 3rd Place in The Icebreaker Tournament.

Up Next: The Three Stars Of The IceBreaker Championship Game.

Honoring The IceBreaker's All-Tournament Team

The IceBreaker turned out to be an enjoyable success. OK, the presentation was a little rough around the edges. As one example, HockeyBuckeye noted that the concessions weren't quite up to the usual Schottenstein Center standards. Also, accessing the building wasn't 100% smooth. Some of the normal entrances weren't in use, perhaps due to staffing issues. But everyone persevered. The guess here is that these small glitches were primarily a function of holding the tournament on a Home Football Weekend.

One the ice, there was plenty to like. Naturally those of us connected to The Ohio State University were pleased with The 1st Place finish. From there, it wasn't exactly a shock that the 3 players from the host school landed on the All-Tournament Team. I'll embrace this story line and award my Three Stars to those Buckeyes.

One Nittany Lion was selected for the All Tourney Squad: Tessa Janecke. I certainly have no quarrel with that choice; Tessa earned a Star from me for both of the games she played this weekend.

Two members of the Cornell Big Red earned places in the club. I recognize each with an Honorable Mention in my Championship Game Post.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (tie) Grace Dwyer, Cornell & Annelies Bergmann, Cornell
Grace becomes the latest installment in my effort to honor effective defense in this space. Like the others previously earning this Mention, Grace shows great hockey instincts and hustle, and always seems to be in the mix. Often she's the player to settle down the chaos. So I'm happy to concur with the Dwyer selection.

Ohio State and Penn State both split the goalkeeping duties during the tournament. But Annelies held down the Cornell Net all weekend long. No doubt Bergmann had her best experience with shutout she earned on Friday. It's equally obvious that she'd rewrite the Saturday narrative if she could. I'll just say Annelies is a fine goalie and stick with my theme.

#3 Star: Emma Peschel, Ohio State
I dunno; should Peschel have nickname? "Effective Emma" might be a good first try.

Beyond her reliable defense, Peschel had an important Assist on the GWG. Emma zipped a pass across to Joy Dunne. Joy launched a "take no prisoners" rocket toward the Big Red Net. Along the way, the blast slightly deflected off of Jenna Buglioni -- making it even more impossible to stop. Thus 3 of OSU's biggest stars wound up combining for the game-winner.

#2 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
Statistically speaking, Jocelyn had the biggest day. Her 4 points came from 2 Goals & 2 Assists. That was the top total for all players. As it happened, Amos was something of a Special Teams Guru in the title game, netting both a short handed goal and a power play goal.

Jocelyn would have been fully deserving of the #1 Star. Except that...

#1 Star: Joy Dunne, Ohio State
... Joy Dunne was the top difference maker in this one. I've told you about Dunne's Primary Assist on the GWG. Perhaps even more important was her tally with 0.6 seconds left in the 1st Period.

Time was running down in the opening stanza. The Buckeyes were clinging to a tenuous 2-1 lead. Some teams would have been content to let the clock run out and regroup in the locker room. But there was no quit in the Buckeyes' top line. Defender Brooke Disher wasn't ready to relax either. The Big Red tried to clear their defensive zone, but Brooke said No. Next move, Dishing the puck to Jenna Buglioni behind the Cornell Net. From there, a necessarily quick centering pass -- which Joy pounded home.

Live, I believed it was clearly a good goal. I experienced some nervous surprise when I learned there had only been six tenths of a second to spare. But happily it was enough. Even after Cornell mounted a strong two goal push, cutting the 4-1 lead to 4-3, Ohio State was still in a favorable position. A three goal Buckeye response, highlighted by the two Amos goals, closed the transaction.

Next Stargazing: The Buckeyes Host The Wisconsin Badgers On November 15th & 16th. Prior To That Home Series, Ohio State Travels To St. Thomas.
