Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

We have a coach at OSU here who has the credentials to really take our program somewhere and he's in his 3rd year here.

I think Ohio State missed this Coach by about one year. Now this Coach has turned a program around very fast. WOW.

Obviously, this is just my (Badger) opinion but you guys are way better off with a Badger as a coach than a guy who only got to live vicariously as a Badger through his son Jordy. Always go with more Badger. :)

All kidding aside, what are your thoughts on us hiring Coach Osiecki? Everyone who ventures into one of our threads from Wisconsin or anyone else in the CCHA or WCHA pretty much raves about Coach Oz, and it's understandable as he has been a winner everywhere he has been. I think some of us are just wondering how long it is going to take before he actually gets our program turned around as the teams we're seeing on the ice right now don't look much different (poor puck-handling, lack of discipline leading to stupid game-changing penalties), nor are they winning any more, than the Markell-coached teams.

Pretty excited for this weekend for a Monday. Funnt what a few wins will do. Hoping for some big crowds this weekend. I think I saw 3500ish Sat night. Go Bucks!

I'd fall under the same banner I suppose as others that think Oz has the right stuff. I guess that it is still going to take time. Sure, Mike Eaves came in here and won the title in his fourth year. But it was with a core of now NHL players he basically inherited. Haven't seen OSU enough to comment on the level of preparedness, but sometimes it's just the kids. We have all the same problems this year. So does MI and MSU. Heck you guys swept NM and they inexplicably swept us at the beginning of the year.
If you hired me to coach OSU Football or Basketball tomorrow, I bet I'd do ok recruiting, and probably do ok winning too. You guys are a premier program for those sports, and I'd benefit a lot from that. It'd take me several years to wreck it. (eventually I would.) When Oz has to recruit against MI, MN, BC, BU, ND etc... Well, to me, it's an uphill battle and it just takes time to build. Maybe even some luck. At UW we like to think of ourselves as a traditional power, although that Rep may be getting a little more dusty lately, but even for a kid deciding between UW and OSU in hockey I think UW has a decent advantage still. (NHL-like atmosphere in the Kohl Center not to mention a bunch of NHL'er alum living in Madison and working out at the team facilities everyday.) With the B16 coming I think it's only going to benefit you guys in hockey. Getting more support and exposure all around is going to be a good thing. Personally I want OSU to have a strong program that is tough in the B16 and I do believe you will get even better players in the near future. Hopefully you won't advance to beating us regularly though...

Thanks for the response Wisko. I believe Oz has the right stuff myself, but he does have three recruiting classes in here so he is close to having a team that is all his guys. I think the situation here just might take longer than we all anticipated. Myself, and some others, IIRC, thought we would see significant progress in the third season. Unfortunately, that has not been the case as we are currently setting in the middle of the pack in the CCHA (6th). OTOH, we play several of the teams above us in the standings to close out the season so we're hopeful that we can improve in the standings between now and the end of the season.

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

I'd agree pretty much with Wisko as recruiting is a big issue. Oz did a great job recruiting talent for Wisconsin but it's a harder sell to get top shelf here in Columbus to a program in desperate need of an overhaul compared to a strong established program like Wisconsin.

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

Just glancing at your roster, you also have 14 underclassman, Soph's carrying the scoring load, plus only one Sr. with more than 2 pts.(I think) Given that when you look around at quality scoring upperclassmen you often see their point line by year go something like Fr.-18 So- 24 Jr.- 34. Sr.- 45, I'd think your guys are ahead of schedule. For a number of reasons quality upperclassmen just make a huge difference in this game. The freshman that come in and score 40 or 50 are few and far between and often guys that won't stick around anyway. (But sometimes a nice add to a veteran team to put you over the top) With the young team you have I'd think the future is pretty bright if Oz can keep adding.
Really, the difference in Oz having a great record and the one you have is essentially only about 11 wins over three years. All in all, I think you guys will be a contender soon, and you'll look back on this day and say... "Oh yeah! Remember when Wisko told us this day would come?" (If you don't, I'll remind you.)
In the meantime just stick with the program, support the players, and make it a great place to play hockey! :)

Also- win some of these upcoming games. We are desperate to make up some ground in the PWR and you've got some games against teams ahead of us. Get on it!

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

Thanks Wisko. If I was still able I'd get on the ice and show these kids how it's done - old school!

I dont believe this is accurate.

Max McCormick, IIRC, was Oz's first recruit. There is not a single upperclassman on the roster who was recruited by Oz,(edit to correct that Hjelle transferred in and is the lone upper classmen who is an oz recruit) and even parts of the sophmore class were guys recruited by Markell that Oz honored the commitment for (Fritz, Dzingel, Cristofoli).

There are probably a majority of players on the team by number that are Oz recruits, but they are all freshmen and sophmores.

That's fine, three recruiting classes vs two recruiting classes. Bottom line, it's Oz's team now, so he is responsible for what is happening on the ice right now. Not trying to start a debate, we're all on the same team here, we all want OSU Hockey to compete for titles. Right now, we don't appear to be at that level yet. In another season or two (couple more recruiting classes), I expect us to be at that level where we are actually competing for hardware.

“@FollowThePuck: Burnsville's Tyler Sheehy @t_sheehy22 has made a verball commitment to play for Ohio State University.”

Big get for you guys. He's a great player.

This is where the move to the B1G is going to be good for you guys IMO. Playing the Gophers regularly (not to mention having Osiecki and his Minny connections coaching) will really help your recruiting in Minnesota. Stepan, now Sheehy. Two outstanding recruits.

Great news. Thanks for sharing. We obviously need more great players at this point.

Looking forward to this weekends series. We have a chance to climb significantly given we sweep and others do as well. ND has hit a rough patch lately losing 6 of their last eight games. Hope we put a few potholes in their way but you know how it is, any given team on any given night. I think we have to come out hard & fast and establish that early lead and with the attitude we're not giving away any games in our house!

A sweep would be nice this weekend. It would really put us in the thick of things depending on what the other teams do. This is a great weekend to move up as the top six teams are all playing each other. Along with us and ND, Miami is playing Alaska, and Ferris State is taking on Western Michigan.
