Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

On to the games for Vita!

Little Deviants - Came with the bundle, otherwise I probably would never own it. Colorful, level based game where you roll around the screen avoiding bad guys, collecting hearts, stars and the key to exit the level. Some traps and such along the way as you would expect with this type of game. The game is completely controlled by the back touch pad. You deform the land to make your character move. This seems brilliant, but in practice on the first few levels I found it very hard to control the movement of my character. Seems like a simple and entertaining game, but the controls make me not want to play it much.

Touch My Katamari - If you have ever played Katamari, you know what you are getting. Pure awesome of course. Offers both classic and standard control schemes. The touch pad is used in both modes, but only for stretching or squishing the katamari. Otherwise in classic mode you are using the dual analog sticks just like on the console. The King is as colorful and insane as usual. You can collect cousins, clothing items, etc. just like in previous iterations. There is a PS Store link, which makes me hopeful there will be additional content in the future.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss - I was a bit reluctant to pay a full $50 for a portable game, but the Uncharted series has been good so I took a chance. Game looks great on the handheld. The controls seem tight, which for a shooter is fairly important. Climbing/Jumping uses some unique controls, that I like. You can swipe your finger across several ledges, tracing the path you want Drake to take and he does it. No need to slowly go one ledge at a time. Melee combat also can use the touch features (or buttons). You can tap and swipe the screen to attack and dodge. Seems well designed.

The other big selling point of this game is the collectibles. There are something like 300 of them, and not all can be collected in a single playthrough. It also uses a black market system where you can trade collectible bounties with others, so that you can find items that weren't available to you previously. I haven't used this feature yet (its day 1!). So not sure how well it works.

Buy 2 Get 1 Free on Vita games at both Target and Gamestop this week (starting 2/19).

The Gamestop deal is on 'select' games (a choice of about 8), and Target's is on 'all' games.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Trying to get the original Railroad Tycoon to work on my mac.

I downloaded it from the Sid Meier website. With it came a bunch of .exe files and Dosbox emulator. It looks like Dosbox doesn't work because it's a windows emulator however, so I went to try the game on Boxer. However on boxer it gives me like 10 choices on what to open, and I found one with the game called rtf.bat, or something along the lines of that. However, it appears broken. I am able to start a game but unable to build a station or tracks, making the game useless. The only option is to buy trains but when i click that it says I must build a station first, which of course I cannot do. Any solutions, or am I screwed because it's a mac?

In answer to your question, yes.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Vita officially launches today.

The PS Store updated last night with some new content for it, including 3 free AR (augmented reality) games, and a special edition of Plants vs Zombies ($14.99). As well as a $0.99 map pack for Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

Netflix and Flickr apps also were added. Facebook and Foursquare were promised, so they will be in the near future.

So I picked up a Vita at midnight last night. Got one of the four available at Wal Mart. Bought it because my wife will be having knee surgery and she needs something while she's laid up (that and we got our tax return).

It's interesting navigating with the touchscreen and the interface is different but nice. I had the same issue with syncing the PSN and needing an update. The screen is nice and big and picture quality is **** good. The memory cards are tiny as are the game carts.

So I've bought Uncharted (the "paint your climbing path by touch" is awesome), ModNation (for my Wife), Little Deviants (for my Wife), and FIFA (because Target didn't have any more copies of Wipeout).

Hot Shots Golf is excellent as well.

I don't even want my copy of Wipeout or ModNation. They are still unopened. Trying to get rid of them so I can buy MLB 12 on 3/6 (not that I won't anyways).

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

I kinda want all of this coming weeks releases.

3/6 - Mass Effect 3 (360)
3/6 - Street Fighter x Tekken (360)
3/6 - MLB 12 (PS3/VITA)
3/6 - MLB 2K12 (All Systems)

But MLB 12 will be the only one I pick up right away.

ME3 is on PC and PS3, too. Got my collector's edition pre-ordered through Amazon, may have to take off early on Tuesday...

Yeah, I just never bothered to update that part. :)

I am excited to try the shared cloud save between Vita and PS3 for MLB 12. It'll be nice to just be able to play one save on either system.

Speaking of PC, I just downloaded the new NVIDIA driver (2/21 release) that increases performance and graphic quality for Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Alice: MR and MW3. Some by as much as 40% according to their press release. Not that my multi GPU gtx 590 was struggling. ;)

MLB 12: The Show today. I am excited to see how the new ball physics work. They apparently rewrote all of the physics in relation to the way the ball spins. So fielding will be more difficult, as the ball hooks or tails away from outfielders and takes bad hops in the infield.

Pitching repertoire is still off for a lot of players, but roster updates from OSFM should help fix that.

First thing I am doing, HR derby at the Marlins new ballpark so I can see the Plinko board light up. :D

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Found out, and took advantage of, that if you buy both the PS3 and Vita version of MLB 12: The Show in the same transaction, you get a $20 discount. So the Vita version ends up being only $19.99 instead of $39.99.

So you have to buy the PS3 version ($60?) and the Vita version ($40) and end up paying $100 for one game? What a bargain!

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Except the point is, I paid $80.

$80 for a game. Oh, that's much better.
My point is that you have to buy a game for the PS3 and another copy for the Vita.

So you didn't actually have a point?

Crazy that for two different systems I would have to buy a game if I wanted to play it. Also, I didn't have to buy it, I chose to.

My point was that gaming has gotten awfully expensive. I'm glad I already traded in my PS3. This isn't about you :p

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

So things I've learned so far on MLB 12.

If you unlocked the 6 classic stadiums (forbes, etc.) previously, they are still unlocked for you. You also get access to the Metrodome, Shea Stadium, and Sun Life Stadium regardless of previous purchases.

The pulse pitching feature is not for me. A circle pulses larger and smaller to show your accuracy with the pitch. The smaller the circle when you throw, the better your accuracy. But as before, you can switch to whatever control system you like.

Haven't got far enough to try the shared saves between PS3 and Vita. So not sure how that will work.

The crowd seems to be even more active this year. Especially behind the plate during at bats (if you change cameras).

In exhibition: Pavano went 5 and 1/3rd no hit vs the Tigers at the Metrodome, then fell apart and gave up 4 runs. Willingham and Doumit both tagged Verlander for Solo HRs. But Verlander still had something like 10 K after 6.

Meh. Cheaper than other drugs. :D
