Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

So I'm cheap and instead of upgrading the kids' Wii for the brand new stuff I bought a PS3 still in the box (co-worker's wife works for Target and got it for him a few years back and he never bothered to use it) with 8 games for $150. We've always been pretty conservative when it comes to giving them first run tech at any level and I know they'll be happy with it so should be a plus plus.

That's a pretty sweet deal. I'd get them PS Plus also, that way they get free games every month that they can play as long as they maintain Plus status.

I never go first-run, because I am also cheap, and know I can save a ton of money if I am willing to wait. Heck, I think my newest NHL game is 2008 or something. :o

Kerbal Space Program is on sale on Steam for $16 for the next 21 hours. It's seriously one of the most ridiculously addictive games I've played in a long time.

It's basically a spacecraft design and flight simulator. You get all these modular pieces that you can stack together however you want, and see if it flies, anything from a simple single-stage sub-orbital craft, to designs based on real-world spacecraft and rockets, to gigantic monstrosities that could lift a small building into orbit. For the most part, it's pretty realistic, if your design is crap, chances are that it'll explode in spectacular fashion :) You also have to fly by real-world orbital mechanics, you can't just point and go. But once you get the hang of it, you can do anything from moon landings, build bases on other planets, send probes to the far reaches of the solar system, whatever.

It's still under development, and as of yet there's no real "missions" per se, but there's a fully unlocked sandbox mode, and career mode where you use research points to unlock more advanced parts with a tech tree. They also seem to release updates every few months, and I believe one is due next week, but once you buy it, all future updates are free. There's also a free demo that's basically the stock game as of a few version updates ago.

As a kid, I loved anything related to space, and playing with Legos, and this kinda reminds me of that. If you ever liked doing that kinda thing, then this is highly recommended.

Plus, there's a bigger library to choose from with the older systems. I'm still playing my PS2 and buying games for it.

Although Atlus' Persona announcements finally gave me my reason to buy a PS3 next year since Persona 5 will be exclusive to it, along with hoping Q will be localized for the 3DS. So glad the dancing game is for the Vita, because I have no intention of ever buying one. :)

I don't game that much, but when I actually game, I make a day of it, usually. That also helps.

If one were to buy PS4 games (disk based) what ones should one really consider?

Great question, and I do not claim to know enough about this new platform to answer it completely, but I can offer-up what I have heard so far. I am sure we will all know much more after Christmas. ;)

I believe that the two most popular FPS games are (will be) Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4. I will choose Battlefield 4 over CoD, for the sole reason of ‘word of mouth recommendation’. Can’t offer any specifics as to why, other than whenever I ask someone more knowledgeable than myself on the topic of these two games, the answer is almost always the same. As for sports games, I intend on getting Madden 25 for starters.

While in NYC this past weekend, we stopped-in at the Sony store. In the lower level, there were a number of PS4s set-up with a variety of games to try-out. Oddly enough, there was not a single PS4 out on the floor for sale. Wall-to-wall PS3s though, many bundled with a copy of “The Last of Us” (which I will not buy, since Naughty Dog did not include Co-op multiplayer mode on that game! Loved that option in Uncharted 3). Anyway, we did not spend a heck of a lot of time there analyzing exactly what the PS4 has to offer, but the graphics were all phenomenal. There was an arcade-like “sit-down” set-up running “Driveclub”, which I suppose is the PS4-version of “Gran Turismo 5”. That game looked pretty cool too, at least graphics-wise.

I did discuss the PS4 with one of the Sales Associates, and he mentioned some info that I found interesting. First, apparently Naughty Dog will bring-back the Co-op gaming mode with the next release of Uncharted (yay!). But here is where he really got me interested... he mentioned that there are a few PS3 games (at the time, he said there were only four) that can be played on the PS4, with a $10 ‘unlock code’ purchased from the Playstation Store. The PS3 disc cannot be used in the PS4, but with the $10 ‘unlock code’, you can save an (emulated?) ‘electronic copy’ of these PS3 games and play them on the PS4. I am quite curious to see how (if!) that works-out.

Stay tuned...

You're missing out, The Last of Us is a great game, one of the best I've played lately.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Through the eyes of “the boy” (and myself mainly as an observer), Battlefield 4 turned-out to be a good pick. Admittedly, we do not have CoD: Ghost to compare head-to-head, but I like the gameplay and graphics of Battlefield 4. Vehicles are a little hard to control, but with experience that may improve (we hope!). Ranking-up online takes forever-and-a-day in comparison to CoD priors, which can be frustrating.

And speaking of online gaming, my rant ... Sony lost their main competitive edge (for me, at least) over X-Box with the PS4. Online gaming at no cost has been what has kept me with the PS-platforms, however with the PS4, a Playstation-Plus account is required to access the online features (multiplayer). Granted, a year-long PS+ membership is slightly less than an annual X-Box Live account ($50 vs $60), but nothing beats free. I am very disappointed with this move by Sony, and I doubt they will reverse-course on this, as I am sure they are enjoying the revenue stream resulting from this decision. This is most unfortunate, and my next platform may very well be the next gen X-Box, as Sony is no longer as attractive as it once was. Sure, the X-Box One is $100 more, but with the ability to interface with other components (cable box) and “Connect” feature, that additional cost could be quite “justifiable”.
/RANT

Haven’t had the chance to try Madden 25 yet... can’t get “the boy” off Battlefield 4, and when he is off, I find myself reverting-back to Uncharted 3 multiplayer Co-op games. :)

AKJD: Regarding The Last of Us... I may just have to pick that up, or at least rent it for a few days to try it out. The only reason I have not is the absence of Co-op multiplayer mode. I’ll give it a go... Thanks!!

Cheers,

In defense of PS+, it does have free games and things available to download as part of the package.

Cool... we'll have to check that out! With all the network issues experienced yesterday (no doubt due to volume), maybe we'll get lucky and they will offer-up Little Big Planet again. :D (honestly, I did enjoy that game... even got the expansion packs for it!)

Cheers!!!

Have to love reading through Twitter yesterday and seeing all the people whining about their parents buying them a PS4 when they wanted an XBox1 (or vice versa). An editor for Buzzfeed was chronicling the ones she saw. She was also highlighting the incredibly creepy dads (or creepier stepdads) who bought their daughters Victoria's Secret underwear for Christmas.

Have most of the Simpson's Tapped Out xmas rewards. Need the last couple community rewards and a couple wheel items (plow king, santaco bldg.).

I will take those PS4's off those kids' hands!

When my iPhone executed the iBrick app, I had to restart the game from scratch because the issues I had with trying to setup an Origins ID. So I'm about to hit the 6,000 gift card level now, not bad considering that I'm just at the point where I can build the SNPP cooling towers.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Ok, I wanna buy a set of wireless headphones for my PS3, hopefully with something that I could use on the PS4 in the future. Anybody else have them? Thoughts?

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

xjeris is my origin name if you want to add me.

level 37 is the max now.

I finally have an Origin ID. I should come across as stclown3664 for an add request. Someone already took stclown. I'm indignant.

Just completed Moe's Tavern.

When do I get the Squidport stuff, or do I have to pay for that?
