Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

The new Seasonal Event in GT5 is a b*. I think I tweaked top speed enough to have a chance at second (still 20 seconds behind the winner) in the first race with the Fiat. I had tweaked it enough to run 3rd, with a darn near flawless race. Left at normal top speed? You're *ed.

And man, AI Drivers are crap. My level 22 driver (win a race, I don't race it again if possible) can't beat a level 16 or so race. No concept of late braking or overtaking a car.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

I've had PSHome since the initial beta but never really used it. Been on it a bit for the last week and it has some decent content.

It's a lot about mini games and item collection. It seems like it was meant for friends to meet up to then launch a game to play. But its become more about just being a social network then anything. Reminds me of an MMO, except without any end game to work towards.

The 100 free item offer from the WB program is what prompted me to try it again in the first place.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Rift is having a father's day special and is on sale for 9.99 if you do the trial. Doesn't include playtime but the 16.99 one does.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Made a $12.5MM mistake in GT5. Bought a Ferrari F1 car for a seasonal event, fully depleting my funds. Why is that a mistake? It can only run in Ferrari F1 races. I can't A-Spec it. Oops. I should have followed my gut feeling and kept saving for the RedBull car. Although if I can get good enough, the FF1 seasonal race pays out $500K~ for the win, which is why I bought the car in the first place.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out for other Valve games. DDO actually went this route and saw a huge return from increased microtransactions.

Should I be wake for this?

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

After 8 months, the video games case should be decided by SCOTUS this morning.

For those that forgot about it: all sorts of stuff can be found here.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

SCOTUS strikes it down. Scalia says playing Mortal Kombat deserves the same protection as reading the Divine Comedy in a footnote.

Like the protected books, plays, and movies that preceded them, video games communicate ideas—and even social messages—through many familiar literary devices (such as characters, dialogue, plot, and music) and through features distinctive to the medium (such as the player’s interaction with the virtual world). That suffices to confer First Amendment protection. Under our Constitution, “esthetic and moral judgments about art and literature . . . are for the individual to make, not for the Government to decree, even with the mandate or approval of a majority.”

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

WOW trial accounts no longer expire after 7 days but you're limited to lvl 20 and a few other things that heavily restrict play. They also dropped the price of the Original game and Burning Crusade expansion online and if you have a copy of the original it's been upgraded to BC for free. (Come on rift force those smucks at blizzard to drop the price)

4.2 patch hit today and I was trying to do the new quest chain for a nice piece of loot except I ran into this on the first part. All those red names are opposing faction and as you can see they have been farming my faction for the ENTIRE ****ing day. Morons at Blizz apparently didn't think how horrific this would be on PVP servers. Even on non-PVP servers it's bad because you have people who try to get you to damage them then they can kill you.

Valve needs to make the TF2 movie already. I'd buy a ticket.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Finally got my new PC up and running last night.

It runs Witcher 2 like a dream. I had it on medium settings as that was the 'recommended' setting. I will bump it up to high and ultra this week to see if there is any noticeably performance difference.

Next test will be Football Manager. Not for graphics of course, but to see how it handles the large database setting with a lot of countries enabled. Probably start by just hitting select all and see what happens. :D

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Finally went through the dreaded task of re-installing games to my new PS3 HDD. Between patches and installing data (GT5 i'm looking at you) it took like 3 hours. I still have a couple left, but they aren't ones I play very often.

FM 2011 was snappy. :) I still can't play with every league, well I could but it would take forever to finish a season. But I was easily able to stay at 5-star performance and above 3-stars in load times with 12+ countries selected (35+ leagues) and a large db.

So I managed to fix mine. Had to do it myself since mine is 4 and half years old and no warranty. Used this handy dandy youtube video guide to do it.

Took a while but it works, at least long enough for me to save to buy a new one and get my stuff backed up.

Beat Infamous 2, pretty good game, very fun to play.
