Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

The only thing that will annoy me about PSN being down is that L.A. Noire comes out next Tuesday.

I bought the PS3 version because the 360 one is 3 discs. I better be able to play offline.

Till then I'll just keep playing XBL. :)

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

All Microsoft needs to do is drop the 360 to $149 right now and gamers will flee Sony like rats.

And they can do it, too. I remember when the original XBox came out they took a $150 loss every time they sold one. They made it back on games. Give 'em the razors, sell 'em the blades.

Yep...though the longer they wait the less chance they have. even if Sony goes in the crapper someone will buy it out and most likely run it better than the two chimps they had in charge the last few years.

Re: Baseball game question

This talk of Sony dying is silly. Sony is a diversified company.

They are a Film Company, Video Game Company, Music Company, Mobile Communications, as well as making other Consumer Electronics. When their stock hits a new low, I would look in to buying it, because it will go back up.

The only way I'm buying an XBox is if XBL goes free. Sorry, not paying $60 a year to play games online when I already have to pay for the internet connection. I don't give a * about all the extras I won't use.

This.

Even if Microsoft dropped the price of the 360 to, like, $50*, I'm still not buying one, because A) I can still play NHL and FIFA and GTA offline while PSN is down, it's not like the games are worthless, and B) once PSN is back it will continue to be free whereas I would have to subscribe to XBox Live, and C) I'd have to go out and buy a whole bunch of new games in addition to the nominal cost of the system. This is a major pain, sure, but be realistic: it's a temporary loss of a portion of the system's utility. And, I might add, a portion of the utility that Sony is offering for free while their biggest competitor charges for substantially the same service. Right now for my $0 I get no PSN, but if I had a 360, for $0 I'd get no XBox Live either.

(The timing of the outage is also reasonably convenient, from my personal standpoint anyway, in that it's May so there's a ton of good TV on most nights, plus NHL playoffs, plus baseball; if this had happened in July, I'd have a lot more spare time on a given weeknight that I'd be looking to fill by playing the PS3.)

(On the other hand, I write this as someone who grew up in the 1980s playing an NES, and for most of my life I've been playing video games without any online component; if I were 16 and I had no concept in my mind of a console that didn't support online play, I would imagine this would be a bigger issue for me.)

* I was going to say $0, but obviously if it were free I'd take the system just to have the option to buy other stuff for it in the future.

I think the collusion between the three (Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo) would prevent that. Nintendo just dropped theirs to $150, so by having the 360 drop to the same price that kills Nintendo's run (which I guess isn't out of the realm of thinking for Microsoft). But isn't Microsoft planning on hanging onto the 360 for another couple of years? A premature drop probably isn't the best idea.

On the other hand, a 360 at $150? I'd seriously think about getting one at that price!

$149 is getting into that "no-brainer" range where people start to get less apprehensive about electronics purchases. You think twice about dropping $400 on a game system, maybe even budget around it. $149 you look at and go "Wow! Sure, I can do that." That would be low enough for a lot of frustrated gamers to make an impulse buy.

Plus the 360 is 6 years old already. Don't know what Microsoft has in line for next-gen, though.

(Though you're right, it would obliterate the Wii, but Nintendo is still kicking butt with the DS.)

It should be mentioned that not all PS3 games work without having an online connection to PSN. Even when you are not using the online parts. Which I think is stupid.

It was one of the reasons I justified the "high" price of the PS3: also served as what is considered one of the best Blu-Ray players out there. Not that I have any Blu-Rays currently, but now I have that option. Plus, I needed a new DVD player anyway (mine was old enough to not even be an "up-converting" player).

Also, I did like the (at the time; stupid hackers) Netflix feature on it (of course, the other consoles have this too, although dunno if they require discs or not).

Either way, I thought about it for quite a few weeks, made sure it would be worth the price, and budgeted for it.

The original price for the PS3 at launch? 599 US dollars. The gaming community screamed "AIEEEEEEE!"

Now it's $299, which is a much better value.

$600?! No way in hell would I have paid that. $350 for mine, but it was the big one (320GB), and included GT5 (saving $10 on the actual game, which is $60 separately).

Re: Baseball game question

Well, apparently May 31st is the rumored date for PSN to be back online. That works out really well for me as I start moving here next week back to Maine and will be done and settled in on June 1st.

Spoilers for the end of Portal 2...

All of the dialog from the Space Core at the end of Portal 2. It's absolutely hilarious.

I did. :o

Granted my still works very well (knock on wood), still plays PS2 games as well (which comes in handy when my Wife wants to play Lego Star Wars).

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Just got my 3rd MLB.TV email today. They have now given me back $15 (total) for the PSN issues. Nice!

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

So I'm trying to hookup my external hard drive to my XBox and I made a partition and changed it to FAT so the system will read it. I plugged it in the USB and the hard drive won't show up at all, any ideas?

Is the HDD USB 2.0 compatible? Also was it FAT32 format? Were you looking in the Media menu under portable devices to try and see it?

Also, I don't believe you can save to it, only read from it.
