Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

I got so sick of everyone picking Man U/Chelsea/Barcelona/Real Madrid/Milan when I picked a team like Palermo, Portsmouth, Nott. Forest, or Sampdoria.

I said screw it, and just play with a better team now. If someone picks a 3 or 3 1/2 star team, I join them, but it never happens.

My default team is USA on the online screen.

My favorite part is when the screen shows up and I am USA and they are around a three star team, so I choose an MLS team that's about evenly matched or even less. Suddenly they switch to Chelsea or Man U like the Sounders or Galaxy suddenly became the Spanish national team.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Ok so I just got FIFA 11 and PlayStation Move (in Soviet Alaska taxes pay you!).

Ummm FIFA is ok, it's a lot like past FIFA's to me. I started a Player/Manager career with my Virtual Pro. Typically FIFA has trouble with MLS and so again this year (biggest irk, no transfers in March like real MLS), at least they have the US Open Cup.

The Move is pretty cool. With Sports Champions it feels a lot more involved than the Wii. The PS Eye forces you to move around a lot more and the 1:1 forces your controller movements to be more precise. Table Tennis on SC is killing my shoulder.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Finished Super Scribblenauts completely.

Played about 45 minutes of Fallout: New Vegas today. Fun so far! Apparently some people have had bug issues that Bethesda has already acknowledged they will be patching soon.

Sadly I really won't get any quality playing time until next weekend, and by then Fable 3 will be out. Too many choices!

Any of you hosers getting RB3? They've been firing out some killer DLC lately and have more big stuff on the way once RB3 is out, including a massive Billy Joel pack. Getting another huge pack of Hendrix and STP was great to have, not to mention there being R.E.M. and Anthrax lately too.

Im thinking about it. The prospect of a "real guitar" with the game seems cool, with frets and strings...I dont know how to play a real guitar so maybe this will teach me?

Yeah, but I thought that "real" guitar was ridiculously expensive

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

I will be getting RB3. One of my friends went to E3, and he's a guitar instructor. He loves the concept of Pro Mode, and thinks it will be fantastic for those who put the time into it. The Squire Stratocaster doesn't come out for a few months though, so I'm going to wait, because that will take up the vast majority of my time.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

On Tuesday, SCOTUS hears the case regarding the California law banning the sale of violent video games to minors. Should be interesting...some of the amicus briefs filed are downright hilarious (think about every anti-video game tirade out there, and they're probably in one of the briefs somewhere).

My guess is SCOTUS affirms the 9th circuit and agrees that video games are protected by the 1st Amendment. Especially since it's essentially a law in search of a problem - virtually all major stores refuse to sell M rated games to minors anyway, and a vast majority won't even carry AO rated games (the video game equivalent of NC-17 or X). But who knows for sure.

So how would that affect say adult material being sold to minors? I'm not for the selling of it to minors, but jeeze, I can't help but think someone's going to bring that up sooner or later.

It's a peculiarty of American common law, but "obscenity" in the legal sense has to be sexual in nature. States are free to regulate sexual businesses and media under a variety of theories, though they can't ban them outright on solely those grounds. But obscenity has never been extended to cover violence, which is why its not a criminal act when kids to sneak into 'R' rated movies or buy the latest rap CD contrary to the MPAA or RIAA guidelines. People providing alcohol to minors can be arrested; people giving minors a copy of Mass Effect 2 or the latest Saw movie cannot.

All the content-rating systems are voluntary in the sense they are not run or controlled by the government per se (not that that keeps the politicians from using them to score cheap points). And the evidence says the video game industry is the leader when it comes to abiding by its ratings system and associated marketing restrictions.

The other fun thing here is the law solely targets video games. It doesn't try to ban the sale of violent music or books or movies to minors, just video games.

Fable 3 is fun. if you liked Fable 2, you will like this one.

A lot of interface changes, as in they basically took all the menus out and created a "sanctuary" that you visit when you pause the game. John Cleese is the voice of your butler. The sanctuary basically holds all of your stuff (clothes, weapons, gifts, etc.) and your link to multiplayer.

No more menu wheel for expressions either. When you decide to interact with someone your choices float above their head (sort of in a Heavy Rain style).

Since you have no inventory now, you only see the items you have that are related to who/what you are interacting with. They generally show up in a physical form in the game on a stand and you can select them from there. If its a combat item it auto maps itself to your d-pad and only appears while you are in combat.

On a seperate note, it looks like I need to start thinking of a thread name for part 6. Too bad this isn't a movie thread or I could use something about Leonard, Part 6!

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Downloaded the new NFS Hot Pursuit demo last night.

Seemed pretty meh, but I was limited to a single race as a cop 370Z, so the final product will probably be a lot faster. The main tactic in pursuit is to just slam the guy in the rear bumper or rear quarter panel - getting alongside and grinding them against the guardrail or swiping their front doesn't really work. Handles like a more sluggish Burnout Paradise (brake-induced powerslides around corners, etc.)

The main draw of the game is the Autolog feature. It keeps track of all your times, scores, etc. on each event and alerts you when a friend beats them so you can challenge him back. Problem is, they're intent on making it the centerpiece of the game, so if you're the only one with the game or you're a loner like me it's kind of pointless. I'd rather have had that time spent on making the gameplay even better.

For the PS3: FIFA11 or PES2011? Both are the same price and both have 4-star reviews...

I've never played PES. FIFA11 is fantastic...everything I complained about in FIFA10 is fixed...except that I can't go down when fouled. There are times I DON'T want to play the advantage.
