Here's the Kinect demo from E3:

And here's one of website IGN at E3 playing Socom 4 using the PlayStation Move.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

I figured as much. I'm not holding out hope for sony or microsoft on this new interface. If it gets good reviews I'll think about it.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

The sony one is especially funny because it's just a wiimote and nunchuck but with a huge lightbulb attached. The only change that gives compared to wii fps games is that the graphics are better.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

I just worry about sony trying to spread their resources too thin. They should stick to what they know best and not this hijacking of the Wii.

Microsoft and Sony are unfortunately seeing Nintendo move a ton of systems and they want a piece of that pie. I say "unfortunately" because the Wii doesn't do a whole lot game-wise to make more traditional gamers want to buy the system. The graphics stink and the amount of garbage shovelware out there is staggering.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

So Twitch, what are today's Game Room releases? I assume Game Pak 006 will have 2 week worth of games in it.

I really like Spider Fighter. Might be the favorite game I own in my arcade now. Which probably explains the challenge I sent you. :D

Indeed, Nintendo is pulling in money from people who would traditionally not be buying a console. I still can't believe that my mom actually bought one.

This pretty much sums up nintendo's stance.

It's always been that way for pretty much any console. There are good games and then a whole lot of crap that is at best mediocre that no one likes to think about unless they accidentally buy one.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

... The graphics stink ...

I think that's part of the "EA effect." The GameCube and PS2 were close. Obviously they weren't direct ports of each other, but they allowed developers to produce games for both machines that looked similar. NHL2005, Madden whatever, and other EA games developed for both systems looked good. Large developers (here is where my love-hate relationship with EA continues) decided that making Super-Hi-Rez games was going to be THE thing. They didn't think Nintendo (who had been struggling since selling Goldeneye on the N64) was going to survive with their "toy," so they never put forth the effort required.

Here are a few screen shots. Are they... A) Wii - Madden 10, B) PS2 - Madden 07, or C) GameCube - Madden 05?

Top to Bottom: Madden 10 Wii, Madden 05 GameCube, Madden 10 Wii, Madden 05 GameCube

So WHY can't these developers just get off their lazy a**es, dust off some old game code, update it and release it. Instead, they have to reinvent the wheel every two years wasting development time and money.

I became a fan of 2k because they at least tried to produce a sim-type hockey game for the Wii. They didn't see it as just a "kids toy." I would return to buying EA hockey games annually if they would have even dusted off NHL 2005 with minor updates, new rosters, and online roster updates (I don't even need multi-player online). Hell, even FORCE people to use the classic controller and not the Wii-mote (developers DO REALIZE they can do this, right?)

On a better note, and speaking of GoldenEye...

Looks good, but those focus groups should be liquidated.

And if you want to play some multiplayer.

Apparently it's not a 100% remake of the N64 game, it's more of a re-imagining to make it fit in with the Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace re-imagining the series did. From what I read it now deals with an international bank heist... but there is a "Drive the Tank through St. Petersburg" level. :D

They don't invest much into their Wii games because they spend all their resources on the 360 and PS3, because that's where the big money sales for Madden, NHL, NBA Live, etc. are. And it takes a lot of money to develop games. They're not being lazy, they're being cheap.

And yes, the Wii is a toy for the most part. It doesn't have the horsepower or means to satisfy the majority of the gamers. But it does have fun games and a workout game that will satisfy Mom, Dad, and their young children. I own a Wii, I don't use it, and I didn't see anything I want to play, not even Goldeneye, not with a Wiimote.

They're not being cheap, they're being smart. EA bringing their regular games to the Wii was a colossal waste of money. Re-doing the games and making them more practical and aimed more for the audience you'll get with the Wii is a smart move. Their NHL game coming this year is a good move because it's refiguring what they're doing game-wise. Tiger Woods has always been the only game really worth trying on the Wii because it's the easiest to make use of what the Wii does. If you want to play Madden, the regular NHL series, NBA or anything else like that and have it look and play great... You're never, ever, ever doing that on the Wii - it's that simple. Expecting them to be able to do the same things was fantasy.

And you know what the best thing about the Move is? You don't have to use it, it's an add-on, not the entire console. I can use the Move in Tiger Woods and, if I don't like it, I can use the ol' Dualshock3. The Wii, you have no choice (oh you can develop it so you have to use the classic controller but what developer is going to that?), it's the Wiimote and motion controls only.

And do you think developers are going to code in a piece of hardware not everyone is going to have? Without some kind of universal support, sony's wiimote is just going to another eye toy.

It's pretty much a grab at the casual gamers Nintendo has been soaking up. Show off something similar for motion control, maybe put out a couple games similar to what's on the wii, and forget about it once enough people have picked up your console to justify development costs.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

JJak, developers do know they don't have to use the wii-mote and can create games using the classic controller for the wii too?

Yeah but the whole concept of the Wii is the Wiimote. Just because they can create games for the classic controller doesn't mean they will. In fact, it's a dumb idea to.

Yes, many developers have already stated that. Blu-ray discs have the space to do it, so they don't run as much risk, just a slightly higher development cost.

Did you just say its a dumb idea to make a game for a peripheral? That kind of would defeat the whole Sony Move argument. :p
