30 minutes south of Rochester just off of 390. Get there early, parking isn't the best. Good sub shop in town also. BYOF as well....food is very sparce out of the vending machine...

Honestly, I got to the SUNYAC Championship game at 5:30 and there was all kinds of parking available. I don't expect as large a crowd for this one, although the ticket sales situation could change things...

Correct. ..530 is a lot different then 630-645 as the majority show up.

Supposedly it's spring break for Geneseo so the majority of students will be gone. I doubt there will be any trouble getting tickets for this one.

This is one time.....It's Plattsburgh's Fault........(people that have been around a while know the reason)

As a student-athlete at that time....I was part of the "problem". Boy, that was fun though !!

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Babson hasn't let in more than 3 goals once this season, but there's a first time for everything. If we let Babson play their game it doesn't bode well for us. Our record when scoring 3 goals or less is 5-5-2, scoring 2 goals or less is 1-5-1.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

this is a very even match-up, a great offense vs a great defense, their defense will be tough to crack, but their offense is semi-lacking which is a good weakness for us. We're on a hott streak now beating Plattsburgh X2, Fredonia, Geneseo, and Bowdoin in our last 5 games, hopefully that will continue.

You should have been there in the 1978 when the floor of Big Brother (Now Woodstock) started to collapse on Friday night and on Saturday they shored it up in the basement with wooden posts so they could open for the big one!!

Imagine trying that nowadays !! They would have 50 ambulances, 4 fire trucks 100 cops and a juggling clown on standby there! Back then, I think a couple of the bouncers propped a few 2 x 4's under the floor and said "good to go".

Also, to everyone, go easy on the broadcasters in both orgs. Overall, they're doing an admirable job, IMO.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a little constructive criticism. Overall...yes, they're doing a good job. Better than most college broadcasters I've heard (and that includes SU). But any broadcaster that can't (or won't) accept constructive criticism isn't a good broadcaster. It's what makes you better. And I say this having spent the last 10 years working in both radio and television. No one here is trying to belittle them or tear them down. It doesn't feel good to be criticized, but if you want to be a good broadcaster, get used to it.

I agree with that WNYO guys are a little fast at times. On radio, it makes it very difficult to understand. There are no pictures to go along with it. On the TV side, I think the play by play guy from the SUNYAC title game (Joe?) did a great job. I was watching with 4 people and everyone just wanted the color guy (Larry?) to stop talking. First, he was WAY louder than Joe. Second, he kept throwing out cliches...but kept getting the cliches wrong. Third, he was also talking very fast. So fast, that he often tripped over his own words.

Personally, I've always felt that the student broadcasters need much more in the way of critique. They should be airchecked after every game and told what they did well and what they could improve on. If that happens, great. If it doesn't, it should. What's the point of letting these kids do this if not to help them get better so they can make a career out of it?

Oh, and GO LAKERS! :D

It's not criticism if its constructive...:D

Talent receives written written and verbal feedback regularly after games from their peers, campus advisors and outside professionals - most sit through replays of their games to make their own assessments. The production team also gets notes on technical issues and creative opportunities for each broadcast. This has been happening since the Campus Center opened...for both TV and radio. They also read this forum. ;)

As opposed to WNYO, which selects its team and sticks with it for the entire season, WTOP has rotated talent - more so this year than past years - as the station expands its event coverage and studio productions, more students earn a seat at the table or in the press box. This creates some challenges for team chemistry to develop, determining strengths as PxP vs analyst, Host vs analyst, etc. Crew positions are also rotated to develop depth and broaden students skill sets. Despite all this, they continue to produce a professional product as a team and improve personally in front of and behind the camera. It's what makes the station such a great place to learn, determine where your passions lie and hone those skills before hitting the outside world.

The issues you raise are valid and were delivered early in the season as things to work on. Improvements have been made, which is very gratifying to those of us involved in the process and to the student's sense of accomplishment. You (and any media professional) are more than welcome to join the effort - doesn't take that much time and the kids truly appreciate the mentoring and support.

Thanks for watching - keep those cards and letters coming! Go Lakers!

I agree with this 100% and personally always welcome and even ask for critiques of my work at every level. That said, some of the things posted here recently have not been of the constructive variety...

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

As the person who initially criticized the WTOP play by play guys I must amend my comments. That was the first game that I ever heard them call and my first impression was not a good one. However, I just got done watching the highlights for the conference championship against Geneseo and they did a great job. The only remaining complaint is the dramatic overuse of "controversial" for anything he doesn't agree with. (One of the Geneseo goals and BOTH goalie interference calls from the last game). I will tune in again this afternoon for sure no matter where the coverage is coming from.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

I'd rather hear "controversial" then the down right "oh my god that's the worst call ever. Do they not see there are two teams out there?", and yes I've heard that from a certain well respected DIII broadcaster. The way I judge a broadcast is how many times you hear the words "Um" and "Uh" when talking. The well prepared broadcasters know what they are going to say, and follow through with what they say, and are normally pretty well knowledgeable on the topics. I've heard several DIII broadcasts use the "#23 for Plattsburgh passes to #12", so yes if they mispronounce a name (another well respected broadcaster of 40 years mispronounced one of his own teams names for a season) does it mean they're not trying?

WTOP and WNYO do their homework for the most part, and I love turning in to the pre-game to hear their opinions. Do I always agree? No, but they normally have some good supporting facts to their opinion. Especially when you've heard other teams that are below .500 claim they are one of the best teams in the nation. When you can easily turn the picture off, or walk out of the room and still know what's going on, I'd say their doing a good job. If you've never seen a WTOP pregame show, watch it, its like the JV ESPN show. They will toss more information out at you that would confuse even Fishman (not that that's hard but)

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

If you had a chance to listen to the broadcaster who did PxP for the UWSP vs St.Thomas game last night, now that was tough. No enthusiasm whatsoever. I got more excited picking out my socks earlier in the day. One thing video broadcasters need to understand, you don't have to announce every little detail while the game is going on. Nothing worse than hearing, "Smith with the puck, Smith skates with it, Smith is over the blueline, Smith takes it to the corner, Smith...etc"
