Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Well there you have it.

Rather than rehash this game just go back and re-read the comments from the loss at Utica last year. It was Groundhog Day all over again. Not the same Elmira team we saw at the Campus Center on 11/16- they looked like a Div I team (or we made them look like a Div I team) for at least the first half of the game. Zwad didn't get a lot of help in the first, Elmira was swarming from the puck drop. Gilbert (just like at Utica) came in in relief and held them out for two periods. He made some spectacular saves.

I want to say we just ran out of gas after eight games in two weeks, but we put on quite a push in the third after the two power play goals- so there was still something left in the tank. Three minors on Waterstreet and two for Carr didn't help. There was one post that I'm sure is still ringing in the igloo, half a dozen "almosts", so it's not like we were out of it. But to be down 3-0 at the beginning of the third was something we sure didn't expect and haven't seen in quite a wile. Hats off to the Soaring Eagles- they caught us just where they wanted us and finished the job.

Looks like we'll need to win the SUNYAC to earn a trip to Maine this year. Lick our wounds, rest up, and be wary of the road trip to two good teams this weekend.

Every team in the East better plan on winning their league this year if they want into the NCAA Tournament with the resumes the Western schools are racking up right now....

Barring catastrophic collapses, the way I look at it, Adrian and St. Norbert are both going. Figure Stevens Point for the Pool B bid and you've got two at-large bids left for Utica, Norwich, Hobart, Williams, Trinity, Plattsburgh, Oswego, Geneseo, River Falls, Eau Claire, UMass-Boston, Babson.

Figure one of Norwich/UMB/Babson will win ECAC East, Williams or Trinity wins NESCAC and Plattsburgh/Oswego/Geneseo wins SUNYAC and that still leaves you with nine teams fighting for two spots....YIKES!

Awesome...in addition to combining the men and women frozen fours at LP 3 out of 4 yrs, you need to work on expanding the tournament field Derek....

We're creeping closer to expanding to 12 teams I believe....

The men and women FF in Placid is a no brainer in my mind for the branding of D-III. However, too many suits feel that the women's tournament would be overshadowed. If it were me I would think having a crowd of 2-3000 at the women's game being combined with men would sure beat the heck out of campus sites where you might get 1000.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Although Adrian and SNC are good bets, a sweep by one of them AND another loss or two..and who knows? I wouldn't concede Stevens Point anything just yet either but they are close. With two at-large bids that will probably remain it's looking like SUNYAC, ECAC East. If Plattsburgh at least gets to the SUNYAC finals they should be one if they were to lose. That could change if they lose to both Geneseo and Oswego down the stretch. Both Oswego and Genseo would need a little help for an at-large.

Norwich is another that looks good. They're probably in the same boat as Plattsburgh. They don't necessarily have to win their tournament to get in but must reach the finals. NESCAC is shaping up like a one-bid conference and that has yet to be determined between Trinity, Williams, etc. If Williams wins the tournament, they could get a second team in.

The Wild Card is ECAC West who have had as many as 3 teams in a while back. Right now, they are on the outside looking in. Utica would have the best chance, but they have not made a very powerful case for themselves. Hard-charging Hobart and Elmira could overtake them , but they have too many losses/ties already. That's my perspective.

Pretty good perspective. One thing to keep in mind is the Western teams live and die on a double edged sword. They have a lot of games remaining versus potential ranked teams. Someone will win, someone will lose (baring a tie). Could dramatically change things. Have to remember, loses to ranked teams hurt worse then a loss to a ranked team. The Western teams could really get mixed up by March.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Made it to my first game at the Campus Center Friday night vs Nazareth. Having graduated in 88' it was also my first visit back to the school. How time has changed the town. Size and speed were impressive. The facility is off the charts, although Romney was Romney and nothing will ever come close to a home field advantage as that rink did. I was there for a youth hockey tournament run by Oswego Minor Hockey (I coach a PeeWee team - 11/12 year olds) and Kevin Ahearn, OSU Hockey Captain 85-86. Kevin and I discussed initiating a first ever tournament coaches game after the players skills competition on Saturday night and it became a reality. Having played with Kevin back in the 80s, it was a blast to get on the ice with him once again and relive the glory days of old. I can tell you first hand that watching a game in the stands was awesome but to play on it was incredible as I am now old. The stands look bigger on the ice than looking down on it. Anyway, all the best to the team and to everyone who follows Oswego hockey. I met a bunch of local people who couldn't be nicer to my players and parents and a few who actually remembered me from my playing days. A big thanks to Kevin Ahearn who attends every game in Section 60 and Oswego Minor Hockey. For what its worth the team I coached beat Kevin's PW team in the preliminary round and as a result I won an Oswego Sub Shop sub and six pack.

Bakdraft21, if it helps to jog your memory, I was there when you showed up on campus wearing your yellow Elmira jacket, watched from the bench when you scored in triple overtime against Hamilton to get us to the ECAC West Finals, did two tours of Fort Lauderdale with you, one that was filmed for the Today Show and one after the Nationals in 87, did pre-game warm up passing drills with you, and bunked on road trips with you and two other down state players. Had one more year left after you graduated. If that doesn't give it away, we went to the same school on Long Island for religion. Separately, for whatever its worth, the team I coached this weekend won its semifinal game in a shootout after overtime and then tied our finals game with ten seconds left and the goalie pulled, no score in OT and once again pulled it out in a shootout. Both games were played at Cristafulli or otherwise know as the Fort. I played with you there as well as Romney was being renovated that season.

Bakdraft: You are correct it was double OT and it looked like the puck was in slow motion from the seats above the ice.
It is nice to have another GREAT LAKER here. Hope to see you at a game for several players from your team attend the games, Fitty, McFall, S. Greene, and once in a while I see Duke.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Why don't you ex-Lakers get organized and have reunion's like Plattsburgh does every other summer. It's loads of fun and the boys cut loose for a couple of nights. Golf tourney Saturday am. It takes a good bit of effort to get it started, but after that it's pretty smooth. If you can get it together, who knows, maybe we can hold a Laker-Cardinal event !! Now that would be a hoot !!

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Haha !! I've noticed a lot of us have slipped in that area.....but there's still a couple of old pros who can suck it up for a night !! I have also noticed that the REAL men seem to come from sometime in the '80's !!!
