I feel like I was run over by a truck between the PBRs and the smoky environment that is the bowling alley.

I picked up some Buffalo Trace bourbon at my friend's wedding last weekend. Boy that's some good stuff, and relatively inexpensive considering. Same price as JD but tastes 1000 times better.

That's because Jack is horrendously overrated - not bad, but way overrated. If I want bourbon that tastes like Jack, I'll get Evan Williams for half the price.

I bought Summer Shandy today! Nice warm day to drink it on the patio.
Has anyone tried the McCallen. I know it is really expensive, but it is a good single malt.

JD is very overrated, but I don't know as that EW is a comparable substitute. I think of Evan as being equal to Jim for a few bucks less, then Jack (which I will order at a mediocre bar, but won't pay $25 for a whole fifth of
), then just about everything else in Jack's price range, then rare stuff I can't afford.

Fair enough - I really don't drink that much bourbon/Tennessee whiskey, but I remember Evan being rather smoother than Jim. I think Evan's an acceptable substitute for Jack in any case, though Gentleman Jack is pretty darn good.

I fell behind on the drinking thread, oh noes.
Shiner Bock = yum. Had a couple cases for my brother's 30th b-day a couple years back. Had to bring some Texas to Maryland.
All the talk of German beer/restaurants has me excited for German Park. If any posters want to come out to Ann Arbor the last Saturday of June, July or August let me know. It's a day of German food, beer by the bucket, music, dancing, and mostly I sit around and play cards and/or dominos. I have a feeling it would be really fun with the USCHO crowd.
I'm considering throwing a Preakness party. Just looked up the recipe for the official drink:
Black Eyed Susan
3/4 oz vodka
1 1/14 oz whiskey
3 oz sweet&sour mix
2 oz orange juice
Sounds decent. May give it a try.
I'd love to find a place to pick up some Clipper City beer too.

mmmm....Metzger's. I typically get Warsteiner dark when I'm there. In fact, that's what I had with my b-day dinner last month. I don't get to Metzger's often enough.

When I was home last, I picked up a two-four of Premo bottles, the Schell's sampler - with the Snowstorm in it, can't wait to try it, and I got a special delivery of Uncle Matt's beer - Chocolate Thunder and the Bourbon Vanilla Imperial Porter.

I remember liking Shiner, but now it is bland. I wonder if things changed with its recipe, or if my tastes have evolved.

soh: Your tastes probably changed/improved with experience. I used to think Bell's Hopslam was fantastic until I tried a lot of other Imperial IPAs and found several that are better.

To me, Shiner wasn't anything special. It was just a good "normal" beer. Crucify me if you want, but it ranks among the Budweisers, Mich Goldens, etc. When I don't want anything special, I just want a beer that tastes good.
