Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

I can honestly say the only beer I have ever had that I thought was too hoppy was Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA. Otherwise, I'll drink anything that isn't light "beer" or Miller.

That was what immediately came to mind when I posted that. The 90 is great, the 60 is good, the 120 is undrinkable.

The 90 is one of the best of it's kind. A little overpriced though.

In a similar vein, Bell's HopSlam is also overrated by the hopheads and not anywhere near as drinkable as the Two Hearted Ale.

My mom bought me one of these for Christmas:

I'm ridiculously excited to try it out.

dx, you must post your review.

Bought some Redbreast 12. A tradition sorta started a couple years ago, when my bro brought some Woodford Reserve to the family's Christmas gathering. The men had a shot/cube after dinner. The next year it was Knob Creek, then Buffalo Trace. Obviously the trend now is to buy something that the others haven't had. Hence, this year, knowing my dad's ahem "frugal ways" and my brother's lack of knowledge of higher end stuff, I bought this. They loved it.

I like the tradition, as it kind of old school: the women do the dishes/tend to the kids, and the men relax with some good whiskey. I don't mean it to sound sexist. It's just kind of a continuation of the golden age of America.

definitely. Might be a bottle I save until the first night in the new house (whenever that comes). It's definitely a special occasion kind of whiskey.

The bottle of Elijah Craig 18 I bought is better and better every time I take a drink. Oh that's some amazing bourbon. Easily kicks the crap out of Booker's, which kicks the crap out of the rest I've ever had. It's stellar. Ridiculously smooth and tons of different flavors that you can find every time you drink it.

For Christmas, I got a Home Brew kit... Kinda came from left field, but ok :p

I don't have a clue where to begin with this... It's the Mr. Beer kit, and claims to be the #1 home brew kit in the US... What kind of resources are reliable for learning about this kind of thing, and what kind of supplies do I need to look into?

Maker's Mark sent their ambassadors a spherical ice cube tray for Christmas.

I'm doing the same thing you are... except I've banned myself from drinking alcohol (I'm trying to lose weight) while I'll make an exception for this and I'd like to start doing this for real.

My understanding is that a Mr. Beer is like a tricycle... its a nice bike to learn when you're first starting out, but by no means are they training wheels that you can just take off later. If you're happy w/ the Mr. Beer you can buy the stuff from them but you have to do it their way. There are other kits out there that are more "doing it for real" and they'll also supply you with their mixes but you can also wander and dabble as you choose.

I'm in the same lot you are in... i'm happy with the tricycle for now so that I can get my bearings and decide what to do next and how serious I want to be. There are more suitable homebrew kits out there for future and more advance use... I personally figure I'll mess with the Mr. Beer for now and then advance on to something else later in the year or next year.

Hopefully my parents can get the Mr. Beer into the mail soon... turns out that it was a little too big to fit inside my luggage. :(

I've re-evaluated:

Crown on the rocks? Meh.

Crown and Coke? It's almost like they were made for each other. The only other whiskey/Coke I've had that was almost as good was made with Makers.

Though it might've helped that the bartender at the Olympia Club (bar in the basement of the Joe Louis Arena) noticed my birthday was yesterday and poured me d@mn near close to a double for the normal price.

Maker's should never be mixed. But I agree on the Crown/Coke. I like Crown on the rocks or mixed.

And in hindsight, that Odell Deconstruction? Wowzer. Better than I first realized. I may have to buy another bottle or two in the near future. There was a LOT going on in that beer, and it all was wonderful.

Picked up some more booze this week:

Surly Smoke
Eagle Rare 10-yr

Anyone know how well smoke will keep if it's at a constant temp, out of sun, etc.?

I dunno, but I was interested in the Smoke, until I read one of the ingredients (licorice, IIRC). That alone turned me off of it. I'm assuming that the licorice taste is like Jag, Anise, etc. Nope, not for me.

Maker's should never be mixed.

Once in awhile, if the bar doesn't charge you an arm and a leg for it, Maker's elevates Coke to godlike status. Otherwise, I agree - if I'm buying Maker's for myself, it's almost always going on the rocks.

I have one of those; in addition to looking cool, you don't get as much water melting into your liquor.

Licorice? I've read a bunch of reviews and it hasn't been mentioned. IIRC, Slap Shot recently had a bottle and liked it.

Guinness has apparently decided that Americans are now worthy of their Foreign Export Stout, as I just had one last night and previously you had to leave the country to get it. It tastes like the Original Extra Stout, but smoother and with a higher ABV. Brilliant! ;)

I recently purchased this and found it to taste amazing. Highly recommended. I think I might like it more than regular guiness

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

I'm not a fan of Crown. I mean, it's ok, but I'd rather have any number of other whiskeys. It's good in a Black Tooth though.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

During tInvasion I, I was sitting at Vango's, debating which beer I should order. HuskyNation looked at me, told me to "just get the Brown," and it was the best beer I've ever had. Today, I heeded his advice once more, and picked up a sixer of Bell's Best Brown Ale for watching football this weekend.
