Am I spoiled by single malts? Johnnie Walker Black Label tastes and drinks like water. For the price, I might as well buy a top shelf bourbon next time.

When I first tried Scotch, the bar had a 2-for-1 on anything. Anything. So I got JW Black. Ok, that tasted good. My second venture into Scotch was Balvenie 12. I never looked back at JW. Ever.

Upon second tasting, the Schell's Snowstorm does still hold the "*ing glorious" classification.

And for those making the Houghton trip next weekend, I just read there will be bourbon vanilla porter homebrew at the tailgate. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

It's a weizendopplebock, right? I've had a couple weizenbocks, and those had a high ABV. I imagine the "dopple" version is even boozier.

And yeah, the rest of this bottle of JW is getting consumed with coffee, and I'm never buying it again. The clerk even told me, "Believe it or not, I sold a bottle of Johnnie Blue yesterday." I said, "Wow, if I ever spend that much on scotch, it's going to be a 21 or 30-year single malt" and he agreed.

1. Yes, yes it is. But it's so smooth. Darker beer (not porter or stout-like) but drinks like a friggin' Blue Moon.
2. Agreed.

Hm, maybe I wouldn't be as much of a fan. Definitely still plan to buy a sixer though.

con1977 and wife are not big fans of darker beers, and I insisted on the Franziskaner Dunkel Weiss when I was there. Same appearance, admittedly a touch better taste, and they loved it. It drinks like a ighter beer. That's what pushes it over the top, IMO.

Edit: it's hard to explain. You expect one thing, but get another, and it's really just a great friggin' beer.

JW Black is decent table whisky, nothing more. But you're right, depending on your tastes, a bottle of Jameson or even Makers Mark might do you better for the money.

Johnny Walker Blue is the best whisky I've ever had, and well worth the money. It absolutely stacks up with any old single malt ever made. People crap on it because it's a blend, but those people don't know what they're talking about.

In theory, a blend has the potential for a far more complex, more rounded flavor than a single malt simply because of its nature (more than one malt). But since it's cheaper to produce it usually is low quality. JW Blue, however, takes the care and time usually reserved for a nice single malt and brings it to whatever select ingredients they see fit. It's the only blend I've ever had that does legitimately compare well with good singles malts.

I'm not even joking. Call up or visit your favorite liquor store and ask them what it would take to have them order a case and try to get some other people who are willing to chip in. They're probably willing to do that. Or even ask about a single bottle, who knows.
Already done several times over. Told the last store I'd buy however many it took for them to get a shipment in. 2 bottles, 2 cases, whatever. The problem is that distribution is limited due to limited production. Called friends in IN, FL, & SC. My brother has 2 bottles on hold in Chicago and a good friend's daughter lives in KY so we'll get some....but you can never have too much of this. Again, if anyone sees this, I'd love to know where and how to contact the store.

Seriously, George T Stagg IS the Holy Grail of bourbon. Despite being 140 proof, it is so smooth it's frictionless. To quote Ferris, "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up"

It's 9:30 and I'm sober. This is not good. Screwdrivers all around.

I have to admit, due to the first snowstorm of the year, I Irished up my coffee this morning. Just the first cup, though.

Was the second cup all whiskey? :D

Btw: Project Hard Cider is rolling along smoothly. I bottled a few from the primary fermentation, but they have the fault of having too much sediment - whenever I pop open a bottle, I have a very limited amount of time to get cider from the bottle into a glass before it starts to foam from all the sediment being stirred up. They're also quite tart and unfinished-tasting, but I expect that'll go away after a month or so. I still have about 3 gallons in secondary that's just about crystal-clear, and that's the next to be bottled.

No, no. The other 4 or so cups were all coffee.

You should bring some cider to Houghton. Oh, and you need to send me your address so I know where to go on Thu morn. :P

If I get some bottles filled and primed from secondary fermentation this weekend, I'll consider bringing those up - the bottles from primary are too wild.

And check Facebook in a few minutes.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

I tried the Schell's Snowstorm for this year. It wasn't bad. I was expecting more of an alcohol taste for the high ABV, but it was really smooth and went down easy. I wouldn't put it up there with my favorites, so I don't think it's a regular buy, but still enjoyable.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

A friend and I had our first annual "Beer Run" event this past weekend. We currently go to school at Southern Illinois but went up to Lafayette, IN. We took a tour of a small craft brewery called People's Brewing Company because my friend knew someone who worked there. They brew 6 beers and they arent too bad. Cant remember much abou them though. We also went to Lafayette Brewing Company. They dont do tours but serve some decent food and a few ok beers. The real reason for the trip was to visit 3 Floyds Brewing Co. in Munster, IN. They make several amazing beers. My favorite is their Robert the Bruce, which is a Scottish style ale (came home with 2 cases). They also make a few other standards (IPAs, wheat beers etc). While we were there we also got some Dreadnaught which is a double IPA and incredibly hoppy. I also came home with some Creeperer which is a double bock. Amazing beer. The guys who run the place and work there are metal fans and you can tell by looking at the site and seeing the labels which remind me of tatoo designs. 3 Floyds has a lot of seasonal beers too. They dont distribute very far but you can get them in the Chicago area and a few places in Wisconsin and Kentucky (check their site).

Also check out their Dark Lord Day event they do once a year. Its a celebration of the once a year release of Dark Lord a Russian imperial stout. If I heard correctly it will cost you $60 for a 22oz bomber if you can get it. Last years Dark Lord Day has several bands playing and lots of food and was attended by over 10,000 people. Pretty good turnout for such a small brewery.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

Everyone speaks very highly of Dark Lord, and as a RIS fan I'm sure it's spectacular, but there's no way I could ever plunk down $60 for 22 oz. of beer. Someday, I would definitely like to make a pilgrimage to try their other beers though, as they are consistently rated among the best breweries in the US.

Yeah I'm not sure I would either (it may be cheaper, the $60 I was hearing was from someone who knew someone who bought a bottle). But the pilgrimage is worth it. They do currently give tours on Saturdays but I think they are trying to go to a reservation method rather than just showing up at tour time. We got lucky and got there at the right time to sit down have a few beers, eat some food and then go on the tour and buy some beer afterward. But the line was out the door by the time we got done with the tour.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

With the stupid government deciding that mixing caffeine and alcohol is bad, how long before they take it a step further and not allow bars to make mixed drinks with caffeine in them? Goodbye to a simple Captain Coke or Jack and Coke? Really?

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

There is way more caffeine in a can of Four Loko (and similar products), than there is in 4-5 oz. of Coke.

That said, I still agree this whole talk of a nationwide ban is stupid. Let dumb people who don't know their limits be dumb, since they're just going to go back to drinking Red Bull and vodka/Jager/etc.
