Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

So I picked up a couple of single malts today. The headliner is the Glenfiddich 15-yr. Definitely excited to crack that one open.
I'm a fan of Glenfiddich. The 15 year is significantly better than the 12, which is pretty decent in its own. The 12 year is still in that "totally decent but nothing special" category.

Brother sent me a message: Glenlivet 12. Not bad.
Meh. I don't dislike Glenlivet, but I think it's the single most over-rated scotch on Earf. I don't understand why it's so popular, mostly among non regular scotch drinkers. It's not any cheaper than any others, nor is it more commonly stocked and it's definitely not any better/more mild/more whatever than Glenfiddich or any of the other lower-end single malts.

It was "pretty friggin good". Though I did like Macallan 12 a bit more. Again, probably personal taste.
I am 100% not a Macallan fan. Can't explain why. I'd rather drink Jack Daniels.

Macallin 12 is a must get. Thanks to Neil Peart, that is the only single malt that my husband ever drinks. Worth every penny according to him.
:(

My bro is slowly getting into the scotches. He's usually a Jack/Powers whiskey guy.

Tell him to try Glenfiddich. After that, either try Oban or Tallisker. That's kind of the big fork in the road, whether you like the more fruity nature of Oban and Glenmorangie or whether you prefer the smokier, peatier flavor of Tallisker or Lagavulin or scotches like that.

Remember, single malts are drunk with a splash of water, not on the rocks like other whiskeys. :)

Funny thing about scotch. First time I ever tried it a few years ago, I think it must've been one of the potent Islay varieties because the two thoughts that immediately sprung into my mind were:

1. "This tastes like a bonfire in a bottle" and
2. "I now understand the 'scotch and cigar' pairing" (For the record, I don't smoke, but a couple of my buddies are cigar-types)

I didn't hate it, but the heavily peated scotches are definitely something most people would have to work up to.

I drank a LOT of Captain Morgan 100-proof this past weekend. (Probably too much.) It is potent, but does not taste as good as the regular (70-proof) stuff.

See, I think I'd enjoy the smokier scotches more but I have no idea since I've never had a heavily peated scotch.

Try Talisker. It's probably $50 a bottle unless you can find a scotch bar (nice hotel bars often have nice scotch selections too) that will make you a glass. I like that a lot. If you do find a bar with a good selections, have yourself a glass of Glenmorangie. Not peaty at all, but absolutely fantastic.

The lighter scotches I like neat, but definitely a splash of water with the Islay-types.

So last night at the Beef & Booze semiweekly event, we had Talisker 10, Glenlivet 12, and Glenfiddich 15. The hit of the night was the Talisker. I'm definitely going to have to try some of their older bottles. Man that stuff is good.

Big thanks Swansong on the Talisker. I know Macallan was mentioned earlier, I was going to pick some up but I just wasn't interested in spending any more money on scotch in a single week.

I have some Ardbeg 10 this weekend. Very different (in a good way). It's heavily peated, but also has an aged tequila smell, and a peppery aftertaste.

Glad you liked the Talisker! If you feel like splurging some time, try the Talisker 18 (might have to order it) or the Lagavulin 16. Both in the $60-80 per bottle range, but significant steps up. I'm too poor to drink them much, but they make fantastic gifts.

I believe the place I went to had the 18. I am definitely interested if it's not too expensive. The 10 was about $50. The 12 would have been $65. I cringe at what the 18 will go for. Might be worth it.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

Talisker 18 is usually in the $80 range. Like I said, well above my normal price point.

Relaxing drinking Molson Golden. It is Mr. wore Black's but he is out of town and I am out of my beer. What can I say?! I drank my stash last night.

Really wanted a drink tonight, bad day at work. Stupid "Tuesdays Suck: (c) Scarlet." But have to go in early again tomorrow (4th day in a row), and will get out late (nth day in a row). So I'll wait until tomorrow, when I KNOW I've earned it.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

I'm drinking tomorrow as well. Tomorrow is friday for Matt.

Lucky bastige. Although next Wed starts a nice 5 day weekend for me. Most of it will be a bender weekend. ;)

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

Yep, I'm off on Thursday too, and taking Friday off as well. Probably will bring some work home with me over the long weekend, but there should be some tasty beverages in there as well.
